7 CSCI213 Java Programming and Applications (6) Introduction to the Java language and its standard class libraries including windowing, graphics, TCP/IP networking, threads, database access, media, security issues, etc. CSCI205 Software Development Methods & Tools (6) Introduction to the software design process and techniques, pattern design and reuse, interface design. A UML supporting tool will be used for practice of object oriented development approach. CSCI222 Systems Development (6) Introduction to the practical aspects of the development of a software application. Gain experience in the software development cycle, including requirements, design, and implementation, and also learn to exploit implementation support technologies. CSCI212 Interacting Systems (6) An understanding of the operating system such as File system, OS, processes, interaction, inter-process communication, parallel and distributed program paradigms, etc.

8 CSCI224 Human Computer Interaction (6) An understanding of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) design principles and how to apply them in the context of developing usable interactive computer systems. Topics include user-centred design, the design process, prototyping, presenting information, user interfaces, interaction styles, usability studies, measuring and evaluating the user experience, etc. CSCI311 Software Process Management (6) Formal methodologies associated with the task of managing the software development process. Topics include: Project Planning, Cost Estimation, Scheduling, Risk Assessment, Planning for Change, Release and Configuration Management, Software Contracts, Ethics, Legal Implications, etc. CSCI315 Database Design and Implementation (6) investigates the process of relational database design. Topics will include Object Modelling Technique, view integration, logical database design, normalisation, physical database design, indexing, view materialisation, partitioning, and clustering of relational tables. CSCI321 Project (12) Working in groups, students design, implement, and document a software system. Involves: project planning and scheduling, seminars and individual presentations, group coordination, research of proposed application domain, use of design methodologies, design documentation, coding, module and system integration, testing, verification, and implementation.

9 CSCI319 Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing (6) Introduces basic concepts underlying modern distributed systems and cloud computing and provides some experience in the implementation of distributed system components. Topics include: multi threaded servers, remote-procedure-calls, modern synchronous and asynchronous client server systems and supporting processes; distributed system, cluster, and grid technologies, etc. CSCI318 Software Engineering Practices & Principles (6) Issues of requirements engineering, system procurement, and professional practice, and through case studies, the subject considers reasons for the failure and success of various software engineering projects. Topics: Requirements Elicitation, Functional and Non-Functional Requirements, Design Patterns and Refactoring, Reverse Engineering, Quality Assurance, Analysis and Verification of Specification and Design. CSCI361 Cryptography and Secure Applications (6) Identify and address security problems in a variety of simple communication models. Topics include: secret key cryptography (DES, AES) and stream ciphers (RC4), security properties, public key cryptography, digital signatures, hashing, MACS's, Key management, etc.
