Planning to travel? Read Hannah recommendations for keeping your Pets happy and healthy while you are away: 1. First choice is to take your Pet with you. Kennel Training - Follow Hannah recommended kennel acceptance training in advance of your trip. Driving - If driving, keep your Pet safely kenneled when in the car. Plan for stops at least every 4-hours to allow the Pet to exercise and eliminate on leash. Having Pets off leash in a strange area especially with traffic is dangerous. Provide the Pet with plenty of fresh water at all stops. Flying - If flying, most airlines allow dogs weighing less than 25 lbs. to travel in a soft Pet carrier that is placed under the seat in front of you. Larger dogs require airline approved kennels and can travel in air pressure controlled cargo areas. Pet friendly airlines will often allow Pet boarding close to the flight time. Traveling early or late in the day is advised if there are high temperatures during the day. Health Certificate - If traveling out of the state or country, call to schedule an exam and to obtain a health certificate, if required, 1 to 2 weeks in advance of your trip. Pet Friendly Lodging - Look for Pet friendly lodging and learn about the requirements in advance. A kennel is almost always required. Pet Travel Anxiety - If you are concerned about Pet anxiety during travel, schedule an appointment with your Hannah Medical Team to learn how to prepare your Pet for travel and to learn if a prescription for anti-anxiety medication is indicated. Pet Meeting New Pets - If you and your Pet will be traveling to visit family or friends who also have Pets, ask your Hannah Medical Team about the best way to introduce your Pet to their new friends. If there s an Emergency with your Pet on the road We can help you find a veterinarian and will authorize treatment and payment. Just call Hannah 24/7/365 if something happens with your Pet when you re out of town, and we ll make arrangements and tell you where to take your Pet. 2. Second Choice is to bring in a Pet Sitter. Pet Sitter - If you can t take your Pet with you, the next best thing is to arrange for a family member, Hannah member or friend to house sit your Pet while you are away. Keeping your Pet at home with a house sitter is ideal. Advantages You know your Pet. Evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of a Pet Sitter. One advantage is keeping your Pet in the comfort and familiarity of your own home. Pet Sitters feed Pets and may be able to give medications. Some Pet sitters will also water plants and turn lights on and off. Cats, bunnies and guinea pigs Some Pets do well with two visits spaced 12 hours apart Hannah the Pet Society; 10/8/15 Page 1 of 5
Dogs - dogs may need an additional walk during the day. Hannah recommends giving dogs an elimination opportunity after 10 hours during the nighttime. Disadvantages - A disadvantage may be not enough company or opportunities to eliminate if there isn t a doggy door or similar option. Pet Sitter visits are usually 30 minutes twice daily to give your Pets some company and to walk dogs. Some Pet Sitters offer a third visit for an additional charge. Qualifications - Some Pet Sitters are certified by and can be located through Pet Sitter s International. See Online Searches - Rovers.com is a new online search to find a screened and registered local Pet Sitter. Research - Yelp ratings and comments plus an initial interview may help you to make a careful decision about which Pet Sitter to hire. Hannah 24/7 Phone Support - Make sure to emphasize and leave in writing with the sitter that Hannah is an authorized contact and to call Hannah 24/7 if there are any health or behavior questions or concerns while you are away. We will coordinate and authorize all medical and emergency care for your Pet, and work with them on solutions. If we feel it is best, we will transfer the Pet to a Hannah Health & Education Center there is no charge for this service. 3. Third Choice is to leave your Pet with Family or Friends, or a fellow Hannah Member. Home Boarding - If your family member, friend or Hannah member cannot house sit in your home, ask if they can keep your Pet in their home while you are away. Hannah Members that attend training classes together over a long period of time often discover their Pets become good friends. These members may choose to trade Pet boarding services to keep Pets in a home while they are away. Evaluate You know what makes your Pet comfortable. The advantage of home boarding can be home comforts and company. A disadvantage can be your Pet s ability to adjust to a new environment, any new Pets or young children, or if no one is home during the day or available to walk the Pet. Pets typically do best if kept on a familiar schedule that meets their daily needs. Pet Supplies - Be sure to deliver with the Pet all the food, medications (if any), leashes, harnesses, collars, toys, chews flea control (if may be needed) and any other supplies that will help keep your Pet comfortable while you are gone. For example, Pets often appreciate having their own, familiar beds in a new location. Food Delivery - If needed, arrange for a food delivery to the Pets location. Hannah 24/7 Phone Support - Make sure to emphasize and leave in writing with the friend/family that Hannah is an authorized contact and to call Hannah 24/7 if there are any health or behavior questions or concerns while you are away. We will coordinate and authorize all medical and emergency care for your Pet, and work with them on solutions. If we feel it is best, we will transfer the Pet to a Hannah Health & Education Center there is no charge for this service. Page 2 of 5
4. Lastly, consider a Hannah Recommended Boarding Facility. Boarding Facility - If you feel that a Pet Sitter is not there enough for your Pets, consider a Hannah recommended boarding facility. Evaluate - You know your Pet best. Evaluate any boarding facility in advance to assess how the environment, housing and schedules will meet your Pet s needs. Advantages - One advantage of a boarding facility is the company and activity of people being around, and for some dogs, the comfort of having other dogs around. Disadvantages - One disadvantage may be more exposure to airborne viruses. Be sure all Pet vaccinations are up to date and add a Bordetella vaccine one week or more in advance of boarding. Hannah Recommended Facility - Hannah has done a lot of the work for you by prequalifying and recommending select boarding opportunities in the area. These boarding facilities have been toured by Hannah and are certified to meet minimum required standards. Recommended Kennels can also qualify for a Preferred and an Elite ranking based on housing upgrades and additional services included or available for an additional fee. Hannah Standards - Here are some of the standards required for a Hannah Recommended Boarding Facility: o Facility Conditions: Tours are available by appointment. When inspected, the facility was safe, secure, clean and organized. o Staffing: Pets are checked regularly by staff trained to recognize signs of illness or distress. Staff-to-Pet ratio never exceeds 1:50. Attendants are onsite a minimum of 12 hours every day, including holidays, to attend to Pet comforts, health needs and cleaning. Giving Pets attention is incorporated into daily routines. The staff seems to love Pets and enjoy their work. o Cleaning: All facilities are kept free of dirt, fecal debris, odor and parasites. o Pet Appearance: Pets appear relaxed and healthy. o Pet Housing: Pet habitats and bedding from home can be left in with the Pet. Sleeping areas are kept clean and dry. Housing is roomy enough for Pets to stand up, turn around, lie down and stretch out comfortably. The size is adequate to keep food, water and bedding away from urination or defecation. o Elimination: Dogs are taken out a minimum of twice daily to eliminate outside of large runs and taken out a minimum of three times daily if kenneled. Cat litter boxes are scooped or dumped at least once daily. o Food and Water: Pets are provided clean, easy to access water and are fed twice daily at a minimum. Food dishes are washed properly between meals. o Preventive Health: Flea checks are done at entry with flea treatments required if fleas are seen. Vaccinations are verified as current for all Pets o Social Groupings: If any social grouping is provided, Pets are evaluated prior to the grouping for friendly and appropriate social behavior o Exercise: Pets are given daily exercise that allows dogs to run and cats to climb and stretch Page 3 of 5
o Discipline: Pets are not subject to scolding, hitting, pinching, grabbing, holding the mouth closed, pinch collars, shock collars, or other painful handling or devices o Emergencies & Illness: Hannah recommended boarding facilities have agreed to call Hannah s at the first hint of any illness or injury. Hannah will work closely with the facility to make sure the Pet is okay, and will go and get the Pet and keep it until you return if Hannah medical staff determines that is best for your Hannah Pet. Hannah Boarding Discount - As a Hannah Member, you receive a 10% discount off regular boarding rates at any Hannah Recommended Boarding Facility. Pet Special Needs - If your Pet has any special health or behavior concerns that are not listed on the check-in form such as fear of thunder, epilepsy, or deafness, add them to the form. Hannah 24/7 Phone Support Rest assured that Hannah has your Pet s health covered while you are away. Make sure to emphasize and leave in writing with the facility that Hannah is an authorized contact and to call Hannah 24/7 if there are any health or behavior questions or concerns while you are away. We will coordinate and authorize all medical and emergency care for your Pet, and work with them on solutions. If we feel it is best, we will transfer the Pet to a Hannah Health & Education Center there is no charge for this service. Pet Checks - Call the kennel every two to three days to check on your Pet s welfare. Prepare your Pet for a Sitter, staying with a friend/family or Boarding. Before an extended stay at a new location, start with a short day or overnight stay. Because dogs read our emotions, be relaxed and happy when you enter the home or facility. To lessen separation distress, skip long, emotional goodbyes and long greetings when returning for the Pet. Check your Pet for fleas before leaving or boarding the Pet and consider giving your Pet a preventive flea treatment. Research - Comments on our web page plus an initial interview may help you to make a careful decision about which sitter or boarding facility to choose. Plan Ahead - Make your reservations early. Most boarding facilities are fully booked during the holidays. Verify Business Hours - When you make a boarding reservation, also verify the drop off and pick up times available. Pet Supplies - Ask in advance what you need to bring in with your Pet such as immunization records, food, medications, bedding and toys. Then leave your Pet with enough food, medication and supplies to cover an extended stay. If allowed, bring in your Pet s bedding and toys, but don t be unhappy if they are a little soiled when you pick them back up caring for lots of Pets is lots of work and at the places we recommend, the Pets are the priority, not the blankets. Page 4 of 5
Food Delivery - If needed, arrange for Hannah to deliver additional food to the Pet s location. Extras - Make arrangements for any special services you wish to add for your Pet, such as extra walks, play time, treats, one-on-one attention, and daycare if available. Vaccine Records - Notify the sitter or boarding facility in advance of current vaccines and ask if you need to bring in proof, or if they will call to verify. Hannah Recommended Facilities can call Hannah with questions. Payment - Ask what types of payment is accepted and the amounts due at drop off and pick-up. Hannah Contact Info - Make sure to emphasize and leave in writing with the sitter or facility that Hannah is an authorized contact and to call Hannah 24/7 if there are any health or behavior questions or concerns while you are away. We will coordinate and authorize all medical and emergency care for your Pet, and work with them on solutions. If we feel it is best, we will transfer the Pet to a Hannah Health & Education Center there is no charge for this service. 5. After you return from your travels. If your Pet was distressed, schedule an appointment with Hannah s Behaviorist to learn how to prepare your Pet next time for your travels. We would also be interested in any helpful feedback if you used a Hannah Recommended Boarding Facility. If you had a problem, please call Hannah Member Services and report it. We will try to help. Help Hannah members make good decisions about their Pet care when traveling. Go to the Hannah Member Facebook, and share with other Hannah members your comments about the Pet services you chose to use while away. Page 5 of 5
