1 Virginia Education Wizard Career Planning Project Instructions Login Instructions 1. Go to: 2. Select: Login. 3. Login using your MyVWCC Username and Password. Assessments Instructions Skills Assessment 1. Select the Careers tab from the top menu. 2. Select Assess Skills. 3. Read the instructions for the Skills Assessment then click Start Assessment. 4. Once you have finished the assessment the results will indicate a few of the Career Clusters that you might want to consider when searching for a career. 5. Click on any of the listed Career Clusters to view the different careers that fall under that specific cluster. 6. Feel free to click on specific careers that interest you to learn more about them. Interest Assessment 1. Select the Careers tab from the top menu. 2. Select Assess Interests. 3. Read the instructions for the Interest Assessment then click Start Assessment. 4. Once you have finished the assessment, the results will indicate your Primary Interest Type and your Secondary Interest Type. You can point your mouse at the interest type to learn what it says about you. 5. Below your Interest Assessment Results you will also see a list of all the careers that fall under your Primary Interest Type. 6. Feel free to click on specific careers that interest you to learn more about them or you can click to add the career to your profile.

2 Values Assessment 1. Select the Careers tab from the top menu. 2. Select Assess Values. 3. Read the instructions for the Values Assessment then click Start Assessment. 4. For this assessment you will have to place 20 cards into columns ranked Most Important to Least Important. When you are finished, each column should contain 4 cards. Select Next when you have finished. 5. Once you have finished the assessment, the results will indicate your Primary Work Value Type and your Secondary Work Value Type. 6. Below your Values Assessment Results you will also see a list of all the careers that fall under your Primary Value Type. 7. Feel free to click on specific careers that interest you to learn more about them or you can click to add the career to your profile. Combined Assessment Results 1. Once you have completed ALL THREE of the assessments you can view your Combined Assessment Results. 2. Select the Careers tab from the top menu. 3. Click on the link in the middle of the page that says: Your combined assessment results have been unlocked! Click here to view them. 4. This page will show you all of the careers that are best- suited for you based on the combined results of your assessments. 5. As you search through different careers, you can change the Education Level tabs to sort through careers by the amount of education they require. 6. By clicking on any of the listed careers, you will be taken to that career s Occupation Profile page where you can: a. Read a brief description of the occupation. b. Find out if the job is currently in demand. c. Find out what companies in your area hire for this position. d. Find out how much education is required. e. Find out what you should major in at community college or four- year institution (if the occupation requires education beyond high school). f. Get information on how much money you can expect to make.

3 Career and Course Planner Instructions Any VCCS student can access the Planner by selecting the link at the top of the page that says Career and Course Planner. (Note: You must first be logged in to the Wizard with your VCCS credentials to utilize this resource). 1. Set- Up a. Once in the Career and Course Planner, the first screen will populate the student s information on the right hand side of the screen and display their first semester of enrollment. Students should select their anticipated graduation date. Once completed, the student can click save to move to the next step. 2. Career Goals a. The next section of the Career and Course Planner focuses on the careers a student is interested in pursuing. Any careers that have been saved to the student s Wizard profile are automatically imported into the Career and Course Planner. If a student would like to add more careers, they can do so using the drop down menus in this section. 3. Wizard Assessments a. The third section of the Career and Course Planner imports the Career Assessments available in the Wizard. Once students have completed any of the assessments in the Wizard, the results will import into their Career and Course Plan. If the student has not completed the assessments, they can click on the gray boxes and be taken to that assessment page in the Wizard. 4. Degree and Transfer Goals a. The Career and Course Planner now asks students if they intend to transfer to another institution. If no transfer is intended, the student can move on to the next section. b. If a student is considering a transfer option, they should complete the postsecondary goals, colleges and universities of interest and the transfer planner checklist before moving to step 5.

4 5. Placement Tests a. In this step students are asked whether or not they have completed the VCCS placement tests for Mathematics and English. Students should answer the question, then move on to step Courses a. This step allows students the ability to identify the courses they plan to take at the community college. By clicking on the gray link that says Launch Peoplesoft Academic Advising, they will be taken into the Student Information System (SIS) to view their Student Planner. Using the planner, students can plan their future courses (by semester) in order to develop an academic plan that leads to the completion of their program of study. (It is suggested that students reference their Student Academic Completion Worksheet) b. Students should start by clicking on the green button that says Plan By My Requirements c. Students can now scroll through all of their program s requirements and see all of the classes that they can take to satisfy their program of study curriculum. d. If a student identifies a class they would like to take, they can click on the course. Then click on the green button that says add to planner e. Once a course is added to the planner, students can click on the link that says Return to Plan by My Requirements to select another course to add to their planner. Repeat this process until you have added all of the courses for your program to your planner. f. After all the required courses have been added to the planner, the student should click on the tab at the top of the screen that says My Planner. This will allow the student to view all of the courses that have been added to their planner. g. Each course can then be selected and assigned to a specific semester by using the drop down arrow. If a student is unsure of the semester in which they will take a course, they can leave it unassigned. h. The courses/planner can be updated at any time, as a student s plans adapt and change. i. All additions/changes made to a student s planner will be viewable in step 6 of the Wizard s Career and Course Planner.

5 7. Experiences a. In this step students have the ability to enter any organizations, leadership positions, internships, community service hours, or other relevant experience to their profile. 8. Financial Aid a. This step reminds students of the importance of the financial aid process in order to make themselves eligible for federal, state and college financial aid resources. In this section of the Career and Course Planner, students are asked whether or not they have completed the Financial Aid process at their institution. If they select no, Financial Aid resources found within the Wizard will be made available to the student. 9. Export a. Students have the option to export their completed Career and Course Plan as a PDF document, allowing them to save it externally, print a copy, or upload it to Blackboard for a course assignment. Students also have the option to a PDF copy of their Planner to anyone they would like, including: instructors, counselors, family, or friends.

6 Below, please find a sample completed Career and Course Planner. Students have the ability to use this planner throughout their enrollment with the VCCS. *If students make changes to their program of study/academic plan, they can update their Career and Course Planner, accordingly.
