4 Introduction Thank you for instaing Crescendo. Crescendo is a simpe, easy-to-use musica notation editor. Use it to create, save and print musica compositions and arrangements. Quicky set page ayout, cefs, time signatures, key signatures, bar-ines, accidentas, ties, surs and much more with Crescendo's robust and intuitive interface. 5 Writing Music To actuay 'put pen to paper', you need to seect a too from the tooboxes. There are severa types of too. First there are the navigation toos, for seecting, panning, and zooming. Then there are the notation toos: a text too, a bar ine too, dynamic markings toos, and most importanty the note and rest toos. Once you have seected a notation too by cicking on it or by using its shortcut key, move your mouse over the paper to position the notation, and cick to pace it. A right-cick wi cance the too. Individua notation toos are described in more detai beow. Finay there are toos that work on groups of notes: the tupet and sur toos. Tip: You can undo any change a too makes by cicking on the Undo button in the Edit tab, or by pressing Ctr+Z. The Tooboxes The Tooboxes are the coections of too buttons that appear to either side of the score. The toobox on the eft is the 'Note Toobox', the one on the right is the 'Dynamics Toobox'. Cicking on a too wi seect it, deseecting any too that was previousy seected. Adding Notes and Rests Cick on a note or rest in the Note Toobox and then move your mouse over the paper and cick to pace it. The Note Menu (see beow) wi appear to aow you to make changes to the note, or you can continue pacing more notes and rests unti you deactivate the too with a right-cick or by seecting a different too. Tip: Note toos can be seected quicky by pressing number keys 1-6. Rest toos can be seected quicky by pressing Shift + number keys 1-6. When adding eighth and sixteenth notes (quavers and semiquavers) in succession, they wi automaticay be beamed together. 3

6 The Note Menu The note menu appears to the eft of a note (or a rest) when you cick on it, or when you first pace it. It wi automaticay disappear when you move your mouse away. The note menu aows you to make changes to the note, such as its duration, accidentas, accents, tie to the next note, and whether it is a rest or a note. If you have a note or rest too activated when you change the duration of a note in the Note Menu, then the too wi be changed to one of that type and duration. Tip: The note menu can be navigated quicky using the keyboard: simpy press the number next to the item you want to seect, or press the Esc key to back out or cose the menu. Chords To form a chord, add two or more notes of the same duration to the same position on the staff. The new note wi merge with the existing note to from a chord when they are cose enough. Voices To write with mutipe voices first seect which voice that new music is written to. To seect the voice goto the notation tab on and cick voices, from the menu seect which voice you want new notes created on. Aternativey press the shortcut Ctr + number keys 1-4. It's important to remember to pace rests in areas of sience on each voice which is resting. Grace notes To create a grace note, pace a note on a staff at the desired pitch and right-cick on it and then seect grace note. 4

7 To modify the pitch of a grace note right-cick it and untick grace note. Drag the note to the desired pitch and convert it back to a grace note. Tupets Tupets can be created by seecting the Tupet too from the Note Toobox, and then cicking the first note and then the ast note of the tupet group. Crescendo creates tripets by defaut. You can customize the time ratio to turn it into any tupet that you want. To customize a tupet, right-cick on the number, the bracket or a note in the tupet. A popup menu wi appear and aow you to change the tupet's vaue and appearance. Tip: A tupet wi beam notes together despite the meter settings. Tip: A reguar note group (not a tupet) can be created by setting the tupet's time ratio to n:n, to force the notes to be beamed together. Tip: Rests in the midde of a tupet group can be beamed over. Tip: A tupet can be created over/inside another tupet. Ties To tie a note to any adjacent note, seect the first note to bring up its note menu, then choose the tie item to togge the tie on or off. A tie can aso be togged by right-cicking on the note head, and seecting Tied. 5

8 Surs To sur a note to any foowing note, seect the Sur too from the Note Toobox, then cick the first note and then cick the ast note of the group. Tip: Surs and ties are treated differenty when payback, even some times they ooks the same. Accidentas To set a note's accidenta, seect the note to bring up its note menu, then seect the desired accidenta. Accidentas can aso be set by right-cicking on the note head, and seecting Accidenta. An accidenta symbo can be moved horizontay by cicking and dragging it. The symbo can be moved within the range of the bar, to avoid the interference with notes and other accidenta symbos. Dotted Notes To set a note's dotted state, seect the note to bring up its note menu, then seect one, two or three dots. Accents To set a note's accent (accent (marcato), strong accent (marteato), staccato, staccatissimo, or tenuto), cick on the note to bring up the note menu and choose the accent you want from the accents section. 6

9 Ornaments To add a Ornament mark to a note (Tri, Mordant, Turn), cick on the note to bring up the note menu and choose the ornament you want from the ornament section. Cefs To change cef, right-cick on the existing cef, hover over Cef and seect the desired cef from the submenu. Time Signatures Right-cick on the time signature. To set a time signature for a bar that has no time signature, right cick on any staff area of the bar, hover over Time Signature and seect a time signature from the submenu. Key Signatures Right cick on the key signature. To set the key signature on a bar that has no key signature, right cick on any staff area of the bar, hover over Key Signature and seect a key signature from the sub-menu. Dynamics The Dynamics Toobox shows the toos for dynamic markings and contains the avaiabe dynamic markings that can be added to the score. Cick on a dynamic button to activate it, then cick on the score to add notation. To deactivate a too, right-cick or seect the standard cursor too. When a dynamics too is activated, a horizonta dash ine and a semi-vertica dash ine wi appear to hep with the pacement. The horizonta ine heps to aign the marking with other marking on the same ine. The vertica ine indicates the attachment position of the marking. When the vertica ine points to the midde of a note head, the dynamic marking is attached to the note and wi move with the note. By defaut, the object movement is verticay ocked to a fixed position, ike a magnet. The movement can be freed by hoding down the Shift key. 7

10 Crescendo and Decrescendo (Hairpins) To create a crescendo marking (aso known as hairpin mark), seect the Crescendo or Decrescendo too from the Dynamics Toobox. Pace the start point by cicking on the position you want, simiar to pacing dynamic markings and text, and then cick to pace the end point. Crescendo markings incude two separated binding points, whereas dynamic markings and texts ony have one. This means that the two end points of crescendo markings attach to different bars/notes and move with them accordingy. Text Text can be used to create tempo, expressions, yrics and fingering numbers, etc. To add text anywhere on the score, seect the text too from the Dynamics Toobox, then cick the score where you want the text to be added. This wi open an Edit Text window. Type the text into the text fied, set the size, the font and seect formatting for the text if desired. Cick the Set button to add the text to the score. To edit text, doube cick the text with the seection cursor, make the desired changes, and cick Set 8

11 to appy the changes. Using the seection cursor, you may aso cick and drag text around the score, or right-cick the text to cut, copy, or paste text. Texts have aignment heper ines and movement ocking, simiar to the dynamic markings. Vota Brackets Vota brackets are used to indicate different endings or variations to repeated music. To add vota brackets to a bar right-cick on a bar and seect Add Vota. Aternativey the Vota too can be used by seecting it from the Notation tab or by pressing the V key then cick a bar at the start of the bracket and a bar at the end of a bracket. 9

12 The variation of a bar can be changed by right-cicking on a bracket and seecting Edit Vota from the context menu. Editing the Score Formatting Notes Auto Format is one of the most usefu features in Crescendo. It automaticay repositions a notes in the score or in the seected bars so they are equay spaced. Athough each note can be moved manuay, Auto Format saves hours of work arranging notes. Tip: Whie manuay dragging notes around, you can hod down the Shift key to avoid accidentay changing the pitch of the note. Deeting Objects Notation eements can be deeted by seecting them and cicking the deete key or using the Deete button on the Edit toobar tab. Deeted items can be restored using the Undo button or by pressing Ctr+Z. The Deete key may aso be used on bars. Moving Objects Notes and rests can be moved about by dragging them. They can be moved above and beow the staff, which automaticay creates the edger ines. Bars may be repositioned by dragging the bar ines. Moving Attachabe Objects (Dynamics Marking and Text) Dynamic markings and text are attached to a measure (staff within a bar), or a note. When the object is seected, the attachment point wi be visibe as a sma red box. Drag the object to move its position or drag the red box to move the attachment point so that the object can attach to another note/ce. By defaut, the attachment point cannot be moved between measures. By hoding down the Ctr key, attachment points can be freey moved to any measure. 10

14 Navigation Panning Seect the Pan too from the Note Toobox to cick and drag the score. 12

15 When the Pan too is not seected, cick and drag the score with the midde mouse button to pan at any time. Zooming 13

16 Seect the Zoom too from the Note Toobox, then use the mouse whee or cick/ctr+cick to zoom in and out. 14

17 Undo and Redo Crescendo aows an unimited number of undo and redo actions. Undo Ctr + Z or cick the button marked Undo in the Edit toobar tab. Redo Ctr + Y or cick the button marked Redo in the Edit toobar tab. 15

18 Score Setup Creating a New Score Use any of the foowing options to open a new, bank score: Cick the New button on the Score toobar tab, Seect New from the fie menu, or Enter the keyboard shortcut Ctr+N. Setting a Score Tite Use either of the foowing options to change the score's tite: Right-cick on the current tite and seect Edit, or Seect Set Tite from the Score menu. The Edit Text diaog wi open, aowing you to set the tite text and font stye. Score Settings To open the Score Settings diaog cick the Settings button on the Score toobar tab or seect Score Settings from the Score menu. Page Size - Seect your page size from the drop down menu and aso seect the orientation (andscape or portrait). Page Arrangement - Choose between Vertica, which ays the pages on top of each other or Horizonta, which ays the pages side by side. Staff Settings - Set the staff size and how far apart each staff is from each other. Repetition - Aows you to set how often Cef, Key Signature, Time Signature, Part abes and fu abes are repeated per system. Tempo - Set the beat duration, which refers to how ong or short notes are, and the payback speed for the currenty seected score. Setting Up Parts and Staves 16

19 Use any of the foowing options to open the Parts diaog to add parts and staves, and to rename, reorder, or remove them. Cick the Parts button on the Score toobar tab, Seect Parts and Staves from the Score menu, or Use the keyboard shortcut At+P 17

20 Parts and Staves Parts and Staves can be changed via the Parts diaog as beow: 18

21 To seect a part/staff, simpy cick on the abe or the icon in the diaog. To rename a part/staff, cick on the abe OR use the shortcut F2 whie the part/staff is seected. Buttons Moves a part/staff up by one step. Moves a part/staff down by one step. Renames currenty seected part/staff. Deetes currenty seected part/staff. Creates a new staff at the end of the currenty seected part or before the currenty seected staff. Creates a new part at the end of the parts. Shortened abe You can add a shortened name to the part abe after the fu abe, separated by a backsash (\). The repetition mode for fu and short abes can be changed via the Score menu, Set Part Labe Repetition sub-menu. 19

22 Bars and Systems Creating Bars (measures) To add (append) new bars to the end of the score, use any of the foowing options: Seect the bar ine too, move it to where you want the new bar to start, and eft cick to pace the new bar ine. Cick the Append Bar button on the Edit toobar tab. Seect Append Bar from the Score menu. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctr+B Inserting Bar Lines To insert a bar ine into your score: Seect the bar ine too, move it to where you want to pace it, and eft cick to pace the new bar ine. Tip: To pace a bar ine, there must be room for it. You can make room by moving notes aside. Inserting Whoe Bars You can insert empty bars before the currenty seected bar. First, cick on an empty part of an existing bar to seect it. Then either: Cick the Insert Bar button on the Edit toobar tab. Seect Insert Bar from the Score menu. Tip: Right-cick on a bar or bar-ine to access quick bar insertion commands. Seecting Bars 20

23 To seect a bar, cick anywhere inside the bar's staff area (not between staves). To deseect a bar, cick outside of the bar area. Tip: To seect mutipe bars, hod the shift key. Cut, Copy and Paste You can cut, copy and paste any seected bar or bars. Copied and cut bars can ony be pasted into another seection of bars. To insert copied bars without repacing existing ones, create bank bars before pasting. Moving Bar Lines Cick and drag on bar ines to move them. Whie moving bar ines, the bar's minimum width is restricted by notes within the bar. Moving bar ines to the right wi increase the preceding bar width and push any foowing bars further down the staff, and possiby moved down to the next ine. You can move a bar ine to the eft unti you meet the ast note of the preceding bar. The width of the ast bar in the system wi be extended to fit the end of the system. Setting Bars to repeat First rightcick on the barine you wish to set to repeat and choose the appropriate Bar ending. You may aso set a more advanced repeat symbo by rightcicking on a bar or barine and seecting the Repeat submenu and seecting the desired symbo. Systems and Staff Spacing 21

24 The width of the systems and the height of staves can be adjusted via the spacing diaog, which can be opened by right-cicking on an empty portion on any staff and seecting Spacing. -Adjusting staff height: -Change the vaue in the fied Staff Upper Spacing to change the distance from the staff to the previous eement which can be a staff, tite text or page boundary. -Adjusting system width: -Change the vaue in the Left Margin or Right Margin fieds to change the distance to the page edge. 22

25 MIDI Payback and MIDI Fies Crescendo aows you to payback your score via either the Score or Edit toobar tab contros. Start Payback F3 or cick the Pay button in the toobar. Stop Payback F4 or cick the Stop button in the toobar. Seective Payback Whie one or more bars are seected, ony the seected bar(s) wi be payed back. Import MIDI fie From the main menu, seect Fie, seect Import MIDI. The music notation for the MIDI fie wi appear in a new Crescendo score, which you can edit. Export MIDI fie From the main menu, seect Fie, seect Export MIDI. Exported MIDI fies can be payed by other appications. 23

26 Printing and Exporting Printing To print a pages, seect Fie->Print, or seect the Print toobar item, or use the shortcut key combination Ctr+P. A notation wi be printed, on-screen widgets and cooring wi not. Exporting Images To export an image of your project, seect Fie->Export Image. Set the resoution for the exported images, then browse to the ocation you want to save and seect the fie type to save in. Your choices are.bmp,.jpg,.png,.psd,.tga,.gif,.jp2,.pcx,.pnm,.pgf,.ras,.tif and.wbmp. Exporting PDF To export to PDF format seect Fie->Export PDF. Browse to the ocation you want to save and type the fiename you wish to save as. 24

27 Auto-Save and Crash Recovery Auto-Save Every time you make a change, Crescendo wi automaticay save your fie into an auto-save foder. When you cose Crescendo and if the scores have been cosed normay, the fies in the auto-save foder wi be automaticay removed. Crash Recovery If Crescendo crashes or the scores did not cose normay, the fies wi remain in the auto-save foder and wi be opened automaticay next time Crescendo runs. Automaticay opened auto-save fies wi be removed once they are cosed. To keep the recovered fie, cick the Fie menu and seect Save As to save it into another foder and fie name. The auto-save foder can be found by foowing the path (User Documents Foder)->"Crescendo"->"AutoSave". Auto-saved fies have ".autosave" inserted after the norma fie name. To recover an auto-saved fie, move it out to another foder and rename it with a Crescendo extension (.cdo). Avoid opening fies in the auto-save foder as they wi be deeted when Crescendo shuts down normay. 25

31 Screen References - Staff and System Spacing The Staff and System Spacing diaog aows you to contro the spacing of the seected staff from the eement above it and from the eft and right margins. To open this diaog, right-cick on an empty staff and seect Spacing. Staff Upper Spacing: This vaue contros how far away the seected staff is from the eement above it. System Left Margin: This vaue contros how far away the system is from the eft side of the page. System Right Margin: This vaue contros how far away the system is from the right side of the page. 29

32 Screen References - Text Edit The Edit Text diaog aows you to change appearance of the text. To open the diaog, you can either create a new text item using the text too on the Dynamics Too toobox, or by right cicking existing text and seecting Edit. In text fied, enter or edit the text that shoud appear on the score. The Size vaue aows you to change the size of the text. Seect a font from the Font drop menu. Use the formatting buttons to appy bod, itaics or an underine to the text. 30

33 Screen References - Time Signature The Time Signature diaog aows you to enter a time signature. To open the diaog, right-cick an existing time signature, or on an empty staff and seect Time Signature->Number. Input the upper and ower numbers of the time signature. Upper: Number of beats in a measure. Lower: Note vaue constitutes one beat. 31

34 Screen References - Export Image The Export Image diaog appears before you seect the ocation where you wi save an image of your score. On this diaog, you specify the quaity of the image being saved. By defaut, the resoution is set to 72 DPI, which is suitabe for reading on most computer screens. If you pan on printing your score, you may want to enter a vaue between 240 and 300 for best resuts. A higher resoution wi resut in a arger image fie. Resoution (DPI): Output image resoution. 32

35 Screen References - Tupet The Tupet diaog aows you to enter vaues for tupets. To open the diaog, right-cick an existing tupet and seect Vaues or right-cick an note within the tupet and seect Tupet->Vaues. For tupet creation pease view the Writing Music page. Division Vaue: Rhythmic vaue for each division of the tupet. Number of Divisions: Number of divisions of the tupet. For exampe, a dupet has 2 divisions, a tripet has 3 divisions, a quadrupet has 4 divisions and so on. In the Space of: Number of divisions the tupet shoud be scaed into. 33

36 Screen References - Key Change Note Adjustment When you change the key of a passage you wi be asked what shoud be done with the notes in that passage: -Don't Change the Notation -The notation wi be eft competey unchanged. Choose this if you wrote your piece first, and are now changing the key signature to match what you wrote. Note that because you are changing the key signature, the notes may now sound different when payed back, because they are affected by the key signature. -Adjust Accidentas to Keep the Notes the Same -The notes' accidentas wi be changed so that they sound exacty the same when payed back. Choose this when you decide that your piece woud be better with a different key signature, but you sti want it to sound exacty the same. -Transpose Up 'n' Semitones to Match the Key Change -This wi sharpen each note in the passage by this many semitones. Use this when you are changing the key of the passage to suit a higher register. -Transpose Down 'n' Semitones to Match the Key Change -This wi fatten each note in the passage by this many semitones. Use this when you are changing the key of the passage to suit a ower register. -Cance Key Change -Don't change the notes, and don't change the key signature either. For more fexibe transposition, see the Transpose diaog. 34

37 Screen References - Transpose The Transpose feature aows you to change a the notes in your piece by a number of semitones. To do this, open the Transpose diaog from the Score menu, or from the Score toobar tab. The Transpose diaog aows you to choose the number of semitones to transpose up or down. Transposing by 12 semitones wi transpose your piece up by an octave, eaving it in the same key. Transposing by -4 semitones wi transpose your piece down by a major third, and so on. Note that the range of semitones aowed by the Transpose diaog is determined by the range of note vaues in your piece. This is done to prevent you from accidentay transposing too far above or beow the staff. If this prevents you from transposing far enough, try changing the cef first. For exampe, if you can't transpose your piece ow enough whie using the trebe cef, change to the bass cef and try again. To transpose from one key to another, see Key Change Note Adjustment, which gives you the option of transposing when changing the key signature. 35

38 Screen References - Metronome mark Edit The Metronome mark diaog is used to set the note and beat per minute vaues of the metronome mark. To Access this diaog.
