3 In this essay I argue that the liberal thought has provided the basis the federalist and Europeanist thought which are at the basis of the European construction. I review this thought starting from Erasmus and continuing with Kant, Cobden, Mises, Robbins, Hayek and Einaudi. Is Luigi Einaudi the architect of what we call today the European Union? This question emerges from his European writings and a comparison with the various treaties which landmark the history of the building of Europe. Einaudi s proposals for a European Federation are also part of treaties which have never been ratified: i.e., the European Defence Community (Edc) and the European Constitution. In this article I go through some of his European writings, showing how his considerations and proposals have provided the foundations to the European treaties and how much they have shaped their structure. (forthcoming) C) Teaching experiences: Name: Angelo Santagostino Role: Teacher Title of the teaching course: Theories of European Integration Year: Summary of content: The aim of the course is providing the students with a theoretical framework of political and economic integration and its main realization: the European Union. Federalism and confederalism; functionalism and neofunctionalism; liberal intergovernmentalism and structuralism are dealt with in the first part. Real and monetary theory of economic integration are presented and discussed in th e second part. Title of the teaching course: Political Economy of the European Union. Year: Summary of content: The aim of the course is giving a general view on the policies of the European Union and focusing on two of them: the European Monetary Union and the EU fiscal policy. EU policies are somehow interconnected that why the course will provide students with a general 4

5 view on EU economic policies: trade policy, agricultural policy, competition policy, competitiveness policy, enlargement policy, among others. In these last years monetary and fiscal policies have been at the centre of the attention and concerns of policymakers and citizens.
