2 Probation Outcome Statistics After having worked through Module 6 you should have a good understanding about the value of Probation statistics for both the probation service and other parts of the justice system. This Exercise is to develop your thinking in one specific area. Its main learning objective is to help you understand the value of probation outcome statistics. The exercise should last around 20 minutes. The answers are all found in Module 6 and on the web site referred to. 2
3 Coverage of probation outcome statistics questions In addition to workload statistics the effectiveness of the probation service is measured through looking at the outcomes of its work. Having read through Module 6 tick which of the statements below are mentioned in the Module as being part of probation outcome statistics Cases supervised that conclude satisfactorily Supervisions that fail because the offender commits another offence Pre-sentence reports that are not followed by the judge Supervisions that fail due to bad offender behaviour Supervisions referred again to the court 3

Recording whether the judge follows the advice of the pre-sentence report (PSR) is not usually regarded as an outcome measure since the PSR is a wide-ranging report on the offender of which advice on sentence is a small part and often not very specific. 14 English Probation Statistics There is a wealth of outcome statistics produced by the English probation service, Please download the most recent statistics from their web site Please read through this statistics quarterly brief and answer the questions on the next slide. Most of the replies can be found on the first few pages of the brief. 14
15 English Probation Statistics questions Statements from quarterly brief The main factors affecting the Probation Service caseload are: the number of cases passing through the courts and the number found guilty: the community sentence and custody True/False True rates at the courts: average sentence length; policy change 35% of all community orders had two requirements attached to them True Stand alone unpaid work was the least common combination of requirements About two thirds of Community and Suspended Sentence Orders ran the full course or terminated early for good progress Seventeen per cent of Pre Sentence Reports prepared recommended a Community Sentence, False True False (78%) 15
