1 Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Silicon Valley: Best Practice and Emerging Trends 8th Annual Innovation Seminar in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Silicon Valley, CA March 31 April Presented by BI Norwegian School of Management in cooperation with Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley
2 PROGRAM FOCUS This year s program focuses on entrepreneurship and innovation and explores new paths to commercializa - tion. Fostering innovation and avoiding its potentially disruptive or challenging effects requires a new understanding of business models. This is true for companies whether or not they extend their business to the Internet to a large or small degree. The program consists of two parts: The plenary part of the program particularly addresses the link between ideas and their implementation. The participants will also choose one out of five main focus areas(tracks). The following subjects/tracks for the seminar are: Commercialization Strategies Service Innovation Green Business Experience Economy Integrated Multi-Channel Retailing Each day and topic includes various speakers and/or company visits. Prominent academics and practitioners from well-known companies will present common challenges, and what it takes to successfully develop, implement, and commercialize innovations and multi channel strategies. We typically have various presenters or panel discussants on the program. Days generally start with a recap session, which is held in Norwegian. During these sessions participants discuss the relevance of the individual subjects for their companies, current jobs and projects. Some days end with strike-out sessions in which the presenters of the day sit in different rooms, or at different tables, so seminar attendees can listen to the speaker of their choice according to interest. In addition to formal discussions and company visits, participants will attend informal networking events designed to share their experience. These interactive sessions will offer a valuable opportunity to network with colleagues from a broad range of industries as well as outside experts. The majority of participants in this seminar work in Scandinavia, where consumers have a very high acceptance rate of adopting new products, services, concepts and technologies. San Francisco is a show-case for a variety of industries including retail, finance, bio-tech and software, and Silicon Valley is one of the most innovative regions in the world. This location is therefore of particular interest to Scandinavian executives. We welcome you to San Francisco! Seminar organizers Peder Inge Furseth is the Conference Director. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Innovation and Economic Organisation at BI Norwegian School of Management. Furseth has successfully presented the annual Entrepreneurship and Innovation conference in San Francisco since His focus of research is ebusiness in retailing and banking. Jerome Engel joined the University of California at Berkeley in 1991 to found the Lester Center. He serves as both the Center's Executive Director and the Director of the Haas School's Entrepreneurship Program. He is responsible for the creation of an institution that coordinates all of the university's activities in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. Mr. Engel is an adjunct professor at the Haas School in Entrepreneurship and instructs in both the School's MBA and Executive Education programs specializing in Entrepreneurship, New Venture Finance, Corporate Innovation, Venture Capital and Private Equity.

(IV) Experience Economy. The track shows different kinds and dimensions of experiences, and we take a close look at factors that enhance customers experiences. The track also highlights tools for creating extraordinary experiences. The final day of the track in U.S. is arranged in Las Vegas. Track chair to be decided. (V) Integrated Multi-Channel Retailing. There are two main topics in this track: New channels, and New integration issues. We will use these topics to increase understanding of how to create more synergy among channels. The seminars have also expanded my personal network in a great way, with peers from both Europe and United States. Both the region of Østfold, Norway, and the town of Fredrikstad do benefit greatly from international impulses when we are developing and innovating. During the seminar we are introduced to persons and networks that we on several occations continue to work with when back in Norway. The social networking part brings value not only to those of us who will participate again, but also to all other attendees. I will therefore strongly recommend the 2008-version of the seminar, which this time focusses on Best Practice and Emerging Trends. Ragnar Vermedal, CEO, FOBBL
