EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Optimus, one of the leading service providers in Portugal, is deploying an advanced next generation network (NGN) infrastructure based on fiber-to-thehome (FTTH) as a broadband access technology. The deployment of cables is managed by a geographical information system (GIS), which was originally implemented as a separate system from the network inventory. That meant that inventory information had to be manually extracted and added to GIS information in order for network engineers to plan and manage the network. Building on the highly successful deployment of the Amdocs OSS inventory system, Amdocs Resource Manager, Optimus turned again to Amdocs to support their FTTH rollout. In just four months, Amdocs implemented a data synchronization solution that has enabled Optimus to model GIS data in the Amdocs inventory system, and automate synchronization. Now data in the inventory system is not just brought up-to-date it stays up-to-date. As a result, network inventory and GIS data synchronization time has been cut from several hours to as little as 15 minutes, and planning processes and operations have been reduced by 40 percent. With Amdocs OSS, Optimus has transformed visibility of network resources, made planning and managing the network faster and more efficient, and reduced cost. Amdocs has helped improve the customer experience by providing faster, more accurate network status information, better leverage the time of skilled engineers, and enabled Optimus to provide an improved, error-free overview of its fiber network.

3 Optimus is one of the leading providers of telecommunication services in Portugal, including mobile and wireline telephony as well as new data and multi-play services for consumer and business markets. It is part of the Sonaecom group, a Portuguese communications service provider with a business portfolio comprising telecommunications, IT and online and media services. In addition to offering its own services direct to subscribers, Optimus also leases out its fiber network to other service providers. One of the developments that helped transform Optimus into a leading player in its market is an ambitious strategy to deliver next generation network (NGN) services nationwide. In order to achieve this, Optimus is deploying a national fiber optic network which currently connects urban areas, and is being expanded to cover rural areas as well. This data synchronization project is groundbreaking; we wanted someone who really knew what they were doing. Disparate data systems meant slow, complex data sharing One of the innovative and advanced features of the Optimus infrastructure strategy is to roll out fiber optic cable all the way to the customer s home in order to enable high speed access. FTTH is enabling Optimus to introduce a raft of new services to customers, such as IPTV, as well as support a significant increase in performance requirements for data, video and other large bandwidth applications over standard telephony and broadband Internet. The Optimus FTTH infrastructure comprises five Metro Area Networks (MANs) connecting up 100 cells, with each cell representing 2,000 households. This gives Optimus a FTTH subscriber base of over 200,000, making it one of the leading FTTH operators in Portugal. Optimus fiber network was designed in a geographical information system (GIS), and is separate from Optimus network inventory system, which is based on Amdocs Resource Manager. This was hindering roll out of the FTTH network because getting a single and comprehensive view of the network plan was difficult. Exchanging information between the network inventory and GIS usually had to be done manually, through telephone calls and s between network planners and GIS operators. But with the detail and volume of information hundreds of thousands of separate items of equipment and network circuits - this was a slow process and prone to errors, often taking hours. We had great success with Amdocs OSS for our inventory, and have a strong relationship with the company, so we chose Amdocs to deploy the data synchronization project between our GIS and inventory as well. One of the challenges facing Optimus was how to marry logical information such as path capacity, point-to-point connections and resources with the physical geography data including passive equipment, fiber cables, and natural features between any given points in the network. Optimus decided to address the challenge by integrating GIS information into its Amdocs OSS inventory.

Building upon the success of Amdocs OSS, Optimus turned again to Amdocs to help plan and implement its FTTH rollout. Combined with the existing logical network information already held in Amdocs OSS, synching the GIS data to the Amdocs inventory system provides Optimus with a single, clear and comprehensive view of its entire physical and logical network in one place, right down to an individual set top box sitting in a customer s home receiving services via FTTH. Amdocs OSS is one of the most important tools we have for managing and provisioning network services because of the possibilities it helps us realize in achieving our NGN strategy and bringing innovative products and excellent service to our customers. The clarity that Amdocs has brought to managing the network has had a direct impact on Optimus being able to improve the customer experience. In the event of a network fault, having GIS information added to the comprehensive information already held in the Amdocs OSS inventory system will allow Optimus to be proactive and let customers know there is likely to be a problem, often before they realize it themselves. In addition, it allows Optimus to provide accurate and detailed information to customers about when service will be resumed. Providing Optimus with an instant and clear picture of which customers are likely to be affected by a problem enables the company to warn customers in advance, and further improve the customer experience. By using Amdocs OSS to synchronize GIS and logical inventory data, Optimus has reduced a process that previously took several hours to as little as 15 minutes and is helping to reduce planning processes and operations by 40 percent.
