1 Candidate for Succession Planning & Nominations Committee 1. Full Name and Credentials (as it should appear on the ballot): 2. Current Position: Clinical Assistant Professor 3. Current Employer: Prairie View A&M University-College of Nursing 4. Employer Address: Street Address: Fannin Street Bldg/Floor/Suite/Room: - Office #1142 City: - Houston Zip State - TX - vdmonroe@pvamu.edu Phone: Fax: URL of your work/business home page, if available: Candidate's Campaign Statement ( words, including your research and leadership background to your service in a leadership role in SNRS): I worked for many years as a staff nurse at a large teaching hospital in Houston, Texas. As a CVICU RN, I worked as a charge nurse in many capacities (overall and section-charge) in this same health care facility. During the years , I was the treasurer for the Houston Gulf- Coast Chapter of AACN. Currently, I am a PhD nursing student, who realizes the natural benefit of research to professional nursing and to the community-at-large. I'd like the opportunity to contribute to this body of knowledge.

2 12019 Natural Bridges Lane Sugar Land, Texas Professional Objectives Completion of PhD in Nursing Science degree. Promote professional and academic growth of nurses. Support use of evidenced based research in clinical nursing practice. Serve as an advocate for nurses seeking advanced nursing education. Identification and management of cardiovascular disease in women & minorities. Proposed Doctoral Research Objective The professional's nurses role in early identification, diagnosis, and treatment of blood pressure lability in women and minorities. Essay and Synopsis Previous clinical research has demonstrated that men and women display symptoms of cardiovascular disease differently. Due to the smaller size of their blood vessels, women typically do not display the classic symptom of crushing chest pain, as men. Is it possible that minority women display even a different set of signs and symptoms differently than Caucasian females? The purpose of my proposed research is to determine the nature of these different set of symptoms; and, use this information to educate care providers and clients how to recognize symptoms of blood pressure lability. pg. 1

3 Research Experience and Participation As a staff registered nurse at three large teaching hospitals, individual research participation had mostly been cursory. The major role of this participation was to facilitate data collection on various research based health care studies. The studies involved specific measurements, laboratory specimen collection, vital signs measurement, blood product administration, nursing management, and physician notification. A more active role in research occurred at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. Here, there was the opportunity to be trained in the care of the total artificial heart recipient. Additionally, this experience afforded opportunities for collaboration with physicians, research assistants, device engineers, and other health care personnel.
