August is the month for shooting! National Shooting Sports Month is the month to celebrate the passion we have for shooting targets. It is a pastime that gives a lifetime of enjoyment for the avid shooter but can be shared with friends and family. It also reminds the public that shooting can be a safe, fun activity that is enjoyed by millions. This year the goal of the NSSF is to get new shooters involved in target shooting and grow the sport. 2 Business & Finance As many of you saw or read the article by Valley News Live, it came across that the RRRMC is in dire straits and needs to raise money to keep its doors open. This is not the case. As with any business, we need to have a continued cash flow to keep the doors open. We have our memberships and daily shoot fees that cover the day to day expenses of running the range, but we do have extra expenses such as upgrades and long-term maintenance (sound abatement in the rifle range, filters, the cooling unit in the pistol range, etc.). With the cooling unit we are hoping to start our own classes for youth and adults alike. It will also make it a much nicer environment to shoot in during those hot summer months. We know that during the summer most would rather shoot outside, but we still have those rainy and windy days that makes it difficult to do so. Membership Trends
3 Upcoming Youth Classes RRRMC, West Fargo, ND Watch for the West Fargo Parks Fall/Winter booklet or check their website, which will have a list of youth classes the RRRMC will be running. We will have Intro to Trap, BB Gun, Intro to Rimfire and Intro to Air Pistol to just name a few! Each class we have is a great way to start a new shooter in the family and they can work their way up to different levels of shooting starting with a BB Gun and working up to Air Pistol and even Trap for those who want to be on a high school trap team! For more info visit: Cont. Did you know that kids shoot for free on Tuesdays? Nothern Plains Gunworks The range had some special guests in July, Officer Dave Carlson with the Fargo PD brought in kids from their outdoors program for Hunter Education Training. This program lets kids that live in the FM area get involved with the outdoors. This class was made possible by several volunteer groups coming together for the same cause. We would like to thank those individuals that made this class a success! Volunteer Lonnie Wertz and Officer Dave Carlson with one of their Hunter ED graduates.
4 RRRMC, West Fargo, ND Cont. Flinching Flinching is when the shooter anticipates the recoil while shooting causing the gun to be moved while pulling the trigger. Flinching can result in missed shots. As you all know, we were closed for a week in the early part of June for De-Lead. Since the ranges had to be closed during the cleaning process, we took advantage of that time to take care of some major chores. Over 25 volunteers showed up to help with the work. Some of the work we completed was: painting the handgun range, cleaning tables and chairs, replacing filters in the handgun range, replacing rubber membrane on the handgun backstop, replacing snail traps in the rifle range, cleaning and painting stairs in the rifle range and various other maintenance chores. Everyone worked hard, and we accomplished a lot in 7 days. To all the people who came and shared their time and talent we want to say a huge THANK YOU! You know we can t do it without you. FYI: We had 12,200 lbs. of lead removed from the ranges. Some things you can do to break the flinching habit. Dry fire practice Focus on the sights through recoil Send thousands of rounds down range Shoot with other people The RRRMC has been asking for donations for sound abatement in the rifle range for a few months. Now, thanks to a generous offer of matching funds, we ve reached our goal. The work will begin soon to help decrease the noise and make the rifle tubes a quieter environment to shoot in. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the fund. Every little bit makes a difference.
