CPS Certification Program We are delighted to offer clinicians, educators, and other professionals dedicated to helping challenging kids and their families the opportunity to become certified in the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) approach. This document provides an overview of the certification program, details the specific steps required, and describes the associated costs. The CPS certification program begins with an initial application. All applicants must have completed CPS Tier 1 and Tier 2 training, within the last three years, prior to applying. If accepted into the program, participants then receive intensive training that includes both group and individual supervision, as well as individualized written and verbal feedback. Our aim is to help individuals move through the certification program within one-year. To maintain certification status, participants are required to participate in annual recertification. COST OF CERTIFICATION Application Fee: $150 CPS Certified Practitioner: $1,400 CPS Certified Trainer: $2000 total (an additional $600 after the Certified Practitioner rate) COST OF ANNUAL RECERTIFICATION TRAINING AND POST-CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Certified CPS Practitioner: $1,250 annually Certified CPS Trainer: $1,800 annually CPS Certified Practitioner vs. CPS Certified Trainer All participants must complete the first five steps of the certification program to become certified. These steps include completing an application, submitting three recordings of Plan B conversations, participating in 12 sessions of group supervision every week, completing two live coaching sessions and completing a written quiz. After the successful conclusion of these steps, participants become CPS Certified Practitioners and have access to our Parent Training Curriculum. 1
Participants who become CPS Certified Practitioners and who want to formally coach or train others in CPS, can then apply to proceed further in hopes of becoming a CPS Certified Trainer. The application to become a CPS Certified Trainer involves conducting and recording a 2-hour presentation using our training materials and then submitting this recording, as well as audience evaluations, for review. If accepted into the CPS Certified Trainer program, applicants then provide another two-hour overview training, assist in a Tier 1 alongside two Certified Trainers, and conduct a full day Introductory Training on their own. If deemed necessary, an additional two-hour overview may be requested after the first one is provided. Successful completion of all three steps are required to become a Certified Trainer. Once certified as a CPS Trainer, participants have access to all official training materials for both introductory and Tier 1 trainings. Please note: We ask that all applicants wait to hear back regarding their admission before scheduling any other training sessions. Training materials and Think:Kids decks are to be used solely to complete certification requirements and should not be shared, used, or replicated for other training purposes. Misuse of training materials could impact certification eligibility and completion of the track. Application to the certification program does not ensure acceptance. Certification as a CPS Certified Practitioner does not guarantee certification as a CPS Certified Trainer. All Certified CPS Practitioners and Trainers must participate in recertification annually. Specific Steps of the Certification Process: The specific steps of the CPS certification program are listed below. As participants move through the process, they will be prompted with relevant details about the next step to complete. Please note that in order to apply, participants must have completed both Tier 1 and 2 trainings. The application can be downloaded by visiting the following page: Information about training dates, fees, and payment options can be found here as well. Applications are reviewed twice a year. The first application period is mid-july through August for the Fall certification class that begins in September. The second application period is November through mid-december for the Spring certification class which begins in January. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are designated as CPS Certified Practitioners. If they wish, CPS Certified Practitioners may then elect to apply to proceed with the steps required to become a CPS Certified Trainer. START! 2
Step 1: Application (please note the $150 application fee is non-refundable) 1. Go to to download the application. 2. Once you have completed your application, submit the application, a photo of yourself, and a video recording of yourself doing Plan B through Syncplicity. You will need to create a free account here: and share your folder with tkatzenstein@thinkkids.org and ymoreira@partners.org. If your recording is longer than 20 minutes, please split your video into two shorter files. 3. Once we receive your application, photo, and recording, we will access scores on the assessment you completed during the Tier 1 and Tier 2 training from our database (Only applies to those who attended Tier 1 and Tier 2 after January 2014). Your application, recording, and assessment scores will all be reviewed. We will then notify you about whether or not you have been accepted into the certification program. Step 2: Review of Video-Recordings Once a participant is accepted into the certification program, payment of the $1,400 fee is due in full or in two equal installments with the second payment due upon certification as a CPS Certified Practitioner. Refunds are not provided if the process is not completed. After the initial payment is received, participants will be prompted to submit the first of three recordings that show them leading, facilitating, or troubleshooting Plan B. Each recording must be at least 10 but no longer than 45 minutes long to be considered. Each recording will be reviewed using a standardized fidelity instrument. Individualized feedback will be provided before the next recording is to be submitted. Three recordings meeting baseline criteria for fidelity are required to proceed to the next step. Step 3: Group Supervision In addition to reviewing your recorded work, 12 sessions of small group supervision via webinar are required. These supervision groups will be held for one hour every other week. Each participant will present cases and receive feedback from the facilitator as well as colleagues in the certification program. Step 4: Live Coaching Sessions After group supervision, participants must then complete two, one-hour teleconferences. During these teleconferences, applicants are presented with a vignette by our staff and asked to answer questions and provide guidance to the presenter as if they are supervising a case using CPS. Direct feedback about the applicants coaching is provided at the end of each session. Two successful coaching sessions meeting 3
baseline criteria for fidelity are required to proceed to the next step. Step 5: Common Questions Quiz Participants in the certification program must learn how to effectively address common but challenging questions about the approach. In order to ensure comfort and competence answering these questions, participants will be sent a link to complete a brief quiz. Following successful completion of Step 5, participants become CPS Certified Practitioners and are listed on our website. CPS Certified Practitioner! Certified CPS Practitioners receive our CPS Parent Training Curriculum to use when conducting group training for parents. In order to maintain certified status, CPS Certified Practitioners are required to attend annual recertification training and submit one additional recording of a Proactive Plan B conversation in the first six months following recertification. CPS Certified Practitioners wishing to conduct formal trainings in CPS may apply to continue in the certification program to become a CPS Certified Trainer. Step 6: Application to become CPS Certified Trainer CPS Certified Practitioners wishing to continue in the certification program can apply to become a CPS Certified Trainer. The application involves conducting and video-recording a two-hour presentation about CPS for at least 12 people. We will provide applicants with training materials, a list of expectations for the presentation, and a link to a standardized evaluation for attendees to complete after the training. An application will be considered complete when at least 45 minutes of the videotaped presentation, as well as the evaluations, are submitted for review. The presentation and evaluations will then be assessed to determine whether an applicant is accepted into the process of becoming a CPS Certified Trainer. Step 7: Two-hour CPS Overview After acceptance into the CPS Certified Trainer program, the remaining monetary balance for CPS Trainer Certification is due. Refunds are not provided if the process is not completed. After payment is received, you will be required to conduct another two hour training session about CPS for at least 12 people. We will provide applicants with training materials, including a deck that has a different disclaimer, a list of expectations for the presentation, and a link to a standardized evaluation for attendees to complete after the training. The trainee must submit at least 45 minutes of the videotaped presentation, as well as the evaluations, for each training session. Individualized feedback will be provided for the first 4
recorded training before the second training is to be conducted and submitted for review. If deemed necessary, an additional two hour training may be requested. Step 8: Tier 1 Assist The next step to becoming a CPS Certified Trainer involves assisting in at least one Tier 1 training conducted by CPS Certified Trainers. As an assistant, you will be asked to present at least two sections of the training and participate in role-plays. CPS Certified Trainers who lead the training provide evaluations. These evaluations along with the participants evaluations of the training are reviewed and feedback is provided. Please note that participants may need to travel to a location where a Tier 1 training is being held and pay for their own travel costs. In some cases based upon evaluations, participants may be asked to assist in more than one Tier 1 training. Step 9: Full Day Introductory Training After your Tier 1 assist, you will be required to conduct a full day training session on your own about CPS for at least 12 people. Individualized feedback will be provided for the first recorded training before the second training is to be conducted and submitted for review. CPS Certified Trainer! Upon successful completion of Step 9, participants are certified as CPS Certified Trainers and listed on our website. After signing a trainer contract, Certified CPS Trainers are provided with all training materials to conduct introductory trainings independently and Tier 1 Trainings with another CPS Certified Trainer. In order to maintain certification, CPS Certified Trainers are required to renew their contract annually, attend recertification training, and submit one additional recording of a coaching session or training in the first 6 months following recertification. Recertification Training and Post-Certification Requirements All CPS Certified Practitioners and Trainers must be recertified annually and fulfill their post-certification 5
requirements. This involves: 1. Attending annual recertification training (if certified 9 months or more prior to recertification) 2. Participating in six webinars throughout the year 3. Submitting one work sample for review (in the first 6 months following recertification) 4. Continued submission of training evaluations for review (for Certified Trainers) and parent group evaluations (for Certified Practitioners) Annual recertification training is held for 1.5 days in Boston every other year. On alternate years, recertification training is held for a half-day via webinar. At recertification training, participants will receive information regarding updates to the model, revised training materials, and instruction about how to present the new material. The annual recertification fee includes the registration fee for the conference/webinar, price of all new materials, as well as the cost of the six webinars over the course of the year and work sample review following recertification. All CPS Certified Practitioners and Trainers must participate in six webinars throughout the year. These webinars will be held for one hour between September and June. They will be recorded for those unable to participate live. These sessions will include case presentations and audio/video review. They will also focus on special issues related to implementation, supervision, and training. All CPS Certified Practitioners and CPS Certified Trainers must submit one work sample in the first 6 months following recertification. CPS Certified Practitioners must submit a recording of a Plan B for review. CPS Certified Trainers must submit a recording of a coaching session or training for review. We are excited about your interest in pursuing Certification. For any remaining questions or clarifications please feel free to Tai Katzenstein at tkatzenstein@thinkkids.org and Ysis Moreira at ymoreira@partners.org. 6
