3 Dedication The 2013 Alabama State Nurses Association (ASNA) Annual Convention is dedicated to two outstanding members, both of whom died in early They both became actively involved members from the day they transferred membership to the association Janet Donoghue, BS, RN, SANE-A Janet s first and lifelong involvement in ASNA was with the continuing nursing education committee. She was one of the most prolific activity reviewers on the Approval Committee. Along the way she became an ASNA President. Members of District 1 describe her as self-starter and passionate about everything she touched. She was a pioneer in the field of forensic nursing and became one of the first SART/SANE Nurses. She assumed leadership of the Alabama Coalition Against Rape and led the legislative campaign to make strangulation a felony in Alabama. In addition she was a leader in the ASNA Ethics and Human Rights Committee and became a champion for prevention of hazing and bullying. Janet was an active member of local, state and national Republican women organizations. She led the fight to have Alabama recognized as a strong political force at ANA with her involvement with the ANA Political Action Committee. In addition to all of this Janet remained in the PRN Pool at Huntsville Hospital in the Critical Care Unit. Despite all of her non clinical nursing activities, she never stopped the working in the ICU. Janet was one of those nurses who talked the talk but also walked the walk. She will be missed. Helen Wilson, MSN, RN Helen moved to Alabama in 1989 and immediately transferred her membership and became actively involved in all aspects ASNA. She started as a committee member in the continuing nursing education Approval Unit, approving activities and later transferred to the Provider Unit and became the Lead Nurse Planner. For the past 15 years Helen was involved with the planning of every ASNA educational activity. She was actively involved at the Montgomery, Autauga, & Elmore County Nurses Society as well as District 5. She is credited with mentoring a number of aspiring members into leadership positions. She assumed leadership of the ASNA Environmental Task Force. Helen became known both nationally and internationally for her work with the ASNA Environmental Task Force. She also served as the ASNA parliamentarian. And along the way Helen became an Interim Executive Director at ASNA. Helen represented ASNA on many state wide committees almost all dealing with wellness. She will be missed. 1

7 WELCOME 2013 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention From the President, ASNA Arlene Morris, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE Welcome to the 2013 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention! What an exciting opportunity it is to participate in this 2013 ASNA Convention and House of Delegates, marking ASNA s 100th year of service as the ONE overarching organization for ALL nurses in Alabama! Various events are planned to recall ASNA s first Century of Service and we are honored to acknowledge efforts of nurses who have preceded us, and on whose foundation we stand today. Take advantage of the opportunity during this convention to honor a nurse friend, mentor, or hero! We realize our indebtedness to nurses who have championed our profession, specifically throughout the past 100 years, and reflect on their efforts during various events of history in our state, nation, and world. From early 20th century contagious disease epidemics and recurring wars, to beginning use of antibiotics, immunizations and evolving practice roles for nurses, we see the impact of nurses. What a legacy we have as we are reminded of nurses on many fronts who worked individually and collectively to improve the health and wellbeing of humankind, and to help our word be a better place during our lives. We accept that our efforts will add to those of nurses before us, creating a foundation for the future practice of nursing in our state that will influence healthcare of residents both within and without our state borders. We are proud of the work of current nurses, in all practice settings across our state, who influence the quality of healthcare at local, state, national and international levels. As we carefully reflect on our past and present, we are moved to intentionally envision a future for nurses in Alabama. We are aware that results of our efforts will profoundly affect subsequent generations of nurses in our state, nation, and world. Thus, we welcome the Alabama Association of Nursing Students (AANS) to share events of this 100th Convention, and to partner with us in planning for ASNA s second century of service to PROMOTE EXCELLENCE IN NURSING. We are grateful to the ASNA staff and the Convention Planning Committee chaired by President-Elect Brian Buchmann for their many conference calls, volunteer recruiting, and other details that have huge ramifications for the convention working well. We thank nurses from District Five for their graciousness serving as volunteer hosts. We also thank the staff of the beautiful Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center for their excellent help. Montgomery offers an exciting location as the state capitol, home to the beginning of ASNA and continued home for ASNA headquarters. As each of us learn and discuss, we represent nurses throughout the state working together to promote excellence and provide ASNA s voice for all nurses. A wonderful convention is planned for this year, including educational and networking opportunities, entertainment, acknowledgments of nurses influence throughout the years, and an opportunity to participate in a vision for nurses in Alabama as we look ahead for ASNA s second century of service to nurses. Enjoy these events and opportunities to the fullest during these three days! 5
