Membership Research Schools and other Research Institutes The large majority of our PhD students take part in the postgraduate school of Experimental Psychopathology (EPP). EPP s educational mission is to educate and train PhD students to become autonomous researchers in the domain of experimental psychopathology with a broad orientation, i.e., knowledge of psychopathology, relevant theories, and methodological and supporting skills. Through EPP, research collaboration is promoted with other part taking universities (EUR, RUG, UM, UU, UL, Ugent and KU Leuven). Individual mentoring mostly involves at least two staff members as (co)-promotores. Further, PhD students are encouraged and funded to present their work on international conferences. 5. Research topics 7

2 CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY The mission of our research group is the development of theoretical models to understand the etiology and maintenance of psychiatric disorders and to develop theory-based personality assessments and interventions. The main subjects of research in the program are: 1. Experimental Clinical Psychology 2. Clinical Developmental Psychology 3. Applied Clinical Psychology 6. Program development Our mission is to: conduct fundamental research using methods and models from basic psychology to investigate psychopathology, and to run clinical trials to inform clinical practice. Fundamental research (Chair: Kindt) focuses on the neurobiological and psychological underpinnings of emotional memory. A prime example is our research on stress hormones and the formation and (re)consolidation of emotional memory, using several experimental procedures (i.e., Fear Conditioning, fmri, Trier Social Stress Test). A second line of research (Chair: Emmelkamp) focuses on treatment-outcome research in a wide variety of psychiatric disorders ranging from ADHD, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and substance use disorders. We also continued our research into technological innovations in psychotherapy (i.e., Internet-based Therapy and Virtual Reality Therapy). As per 2008, these research lines have been complemented by research from an (applied) individual differences perspective (Chair: Kamphuis). Individual differences provide the stable and clinically essential personal parameters that link general laws to individual existence, and may help elucidate fundamental themes in utility-based 7.
