The International Education Industry: Big and Getting Bigger Canada ranks as the world s 7th most popular destination for international students. International student enrollment grew from 136,000 in 2001 to over 265,000 in 2012 a 94% increase! International students comprise 6.5% of the student population in post-secondary education. According to a 2011 study, international students contribute more than $8 billion every year to the Canadian economy. International Trade Minister Ed Fast, aims to have 450,000 foreign students studying in Canada by 2022.

Insurance 101 Why Do International Students Need Insurance? o Access to government medical coverage (GHIP) may not be available o The cost of health care in Canada is HIGH o Without a government health plan or a private medical insurance plan, you are responsible for the FULL COST of any medical treatment 5

Food for Thought

Food for Thought To maintain a healthy international reputation, it is important that your students are well cared for while away from home!

Food for Thought Citizenship and Immigration Canada warns: The Government of Canada does not pay for the medical costs of foreign students. Health coverage for foreign students varies among the provinces. Contact the school to which you are applying to receive more information about medical coverage and health insurance.

Food for Thought The majority of schools require proof of health coverage to enrol in order to begin classes Some students will arrive with coverage from their home country, but a Canadian insurer is best because they know they Canadian health care system and the claims process is less complicated

Food for Thought Agents and students will communicate their experiences to others, and, unfortunately, bad experiences speak louder than good ones!
