GLOSSARY OF TERMS Academic Standards: The college policy in place to monitor students earning less than a 2.0 cumulative or semester GPA. The intent of any intervention is to give a student personal assistance to provide the necessary tools to persist in college and to complete their goals. Accreditation: SLCC is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and /or the U.S. Department of Education. Accuplacer: A computerized assessment which evaluates students skills in Math, English, and Reading for placement into appropriate courses. The test is recommended for all degree-seeking (matriculated) students. The test is required for any student registering for Math or English classes. Appropriate transfer credit, ACT, or SAT scores may be substituted for this test. Alumni: People who have graduated from the institution. A male is called an alumnus, while a female is called an alumna. ACT and SAT: These letters are acronyms for the American College Test and the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Both tests are designed to measure a student s level of knowledge in basic areas such as math, science, English, and social studies. At SLCC we use the Reading Score for placement into Reading, Writing, or English classes and we use the Math Score for placement into Math classes. If a student has not taken either of these tests, SLCC recommends students take the Accuplacer placement test administered in our Testing Center. Add: Register for a class during scheduled registration periods. Administrative Drop: Students who fail to attend initial class meeting(s) (usually 1-2 days) and who fail to contact the instructor in advance of the absence may be dropped from the course by the instructor. Advanced Placement (AP): After completion of an AP course in High School, students take an AP exam. College credit is awarded for scores of 3 or better. See current Equivalent Table available in the current catalog. Application/Acceptance/Admission: Completing an Application is the first step to becoming an SLCC student. The Application is available online and requires a $40.00 fee. Separate applications are required for Concurrent Enrollment and International Students. If students are applying for Early Enrollment or are Early High School graduates, a hard copy application is needed (which can obtained at Student Express). A letter of Acceptance will be sent in the mail when the student s application has been processed (usually within hrs.). A student is considered matriculated after they have both applied and chosen a program of study. Freshmen students will then be eligible to register for classes once they have completed a mandatory Orientation. Apprenticeship: On-the-job training provided by a sponsor combined with classroom related instruction designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects of their craft. Individuals must locate their own sponsors and talk with the Apprenticeship Office. The Technical Specialties Advisor and other program advisors with internships in their programs can also advise these students. Articulation Agreement: An agreement between colleges and universities that courses have essentially the same goals, similar content, rigor, standards, names, common course numbers where possible, and equal

amount of credits. Articulation agreements assist students in planning to transfer from SLCC to universities with ease. Associate of Applied Science Degree: This degree is conferred upon students who successfully complete a program designed to lead the individual directly into employment in a specific career. Associate of Science Degree (AS): The Associate Degree is granted upon completion of a program of study intended to prepare students to transfer to baccalaureate programs. The Associate Degree requires completion of a minimum of 61credit hours. Usually requires 34 credits of General Education Requirements and 27 credits in program of study. Associate of Arts Degree (AA): A two-year program of study intended to prepare students for transfer to baccalaureate programs. Requires two semesters of the same foreign language (must be a student s second language). Minimum 61credits. Associate of Pre-Engineering (APE): The APE General Education Requirements are less extensive than the General Education Requirements in an AS degree because GE Requirements for Engineering require some upper-division coursework (courses numbered 3000 and above) to be completed at the transfer institution. Audit: Taking a class at the same cost as for credit, but choosing not to receive credit or a grade. Audit students may or may not take exams or complete assigned work. A student cannot petition later to have an AU changed to a credit letter grade. Bachelor s Degree (also called Baccalaureate Degree): This is the undergraduate degree offered by four-year colleges and universities. Typically a bachelor degree requires about 122 credits comprised of General Education, lower division, upper division, major, allied hours, and elective requirements. BANNER: SLCC s administrative computer software solution. This system gathers and distributes information about students from application to graduation. Banner also contains data pertaining to faculty and staff for Human Resources, course catalog, accounts receivable, and Financial Aid. Banner includes a web interface which enables students and faculty to access and update certain portions of their information online. Banner requires a username and password. Bookstore: SLCC has College Bookstores available at Taylorsville Redwood, South City, Jordan, Highland, Library Square, and Miller campuses and online. Each Bookstore stocks all the books and other materials required in all the courses offered at that location as well as providing basic sundries and clothing items. Catalog: The SLCC General Catalog provides program information, graduation checklists, general education information, course descriptions and administrative information to assist students. It is published yearly. A student will be judged for graduation based upon the catalog they started with unless it is to their advantage to move to the new requirements in a new catalog. As of 2012, the catalog is only available electronically. Certificate of Completion: Program of study, usually one year of work, designed for entry-level employment. Challenge Exams: Students may challenge a limited number of courses which allow a student to pay $50.00 and take an exam to see if they can test out of a course they feel they have experience or previous knowledge in. Upon passing the challenge exam, the student receives a grade of P (pass) and credit for the course. Students should NOT register for the class they plan to challenge.

CLEP: The College Level Examination Program can be administered to students who desire to obtain college credit by taking proficiency tests in selected courses. If the student scores high enough on the test, college credit can be awarded. There is a charge for each test taken, but not for the credit awarded. SLCC awards college credit only for certain CLEP exams (see current catalog and Testing Services website). These exams are administered in the SLCC Testing Center. College: A College is an institution of higher education that grants degrees and certificates. The term is also used to designate the organizational units of a university such as the College of Education or the College of Engineering. Community College: A college offering a two-year program rather than a four-year program of study. A community college usually offers vocational programs as well as the first two years of a four-year college program. The student in the vocational program usually goes directly into a vocation after graduation, while the student in the academic program transfers to a four-year college. (Community College may also be called: Junior College, Technical College, City College). Commuter College: Some colleges do not have on-campus housing, and all students live off campus and commute to the college for classes. Concurrent Enrollment: A college-level class offered to juniors and seniors on high school campuses for high school and college credit. Taking these classes begins a student s college GPA. Students apply for, and register for these classes through their high schools. Continuing Education: Programs designed to meet the needs of business, industry, agencies, and professionals in their fields. Programs range from on-going career oriented programs to upgrade and customized training for a particular skill. Certificates are awarded for completing Continuing Education programs. Continuing Education courses are typically not eligible for Financial Aid. Cooperative Education (CO-OP): Offers opportunities for students to earn college credit by completing portions of their education through new learning associated with employment/internships. Students visit with Student Employment and Cooperative Education to register and participate in an orientation. Course Numbers: All courses are identified by numbers usually containing 4 digits. A course number beginning with a "0" does not carry credit hours applicable to a certificate or degree and does not transfer. Credit Hours: Courses taken in college are measured in terms of credit hours. Usually it is an indication of hours per week that will be spent in the classroom. A lecture class that meets for one hour (50 min.), three times a week is worth 3 semester credits. Laboratory credits may be calculated as two hours attendance per week for 1 semester credit. The number of credits taken determines the tuition cost. There are minimum credit hour requirements for completion or graduation from a program of study. Curriculum: A curriculum is composed of those classes prescribed or outlined by an institution for completion of a program of study leading to a degree or certificate. Curricular Practical Training (CPT): When an International Student who is in the United States on a visa wants to obtain employment for experience in their major field, they must submit a letter from their Academic Advisor stating their status and request. They must have completed at least two semesters, have no Co-op class

available, and still be enrolled in classes. If approved, they may work up to 20 hours a week for one semester only per that approval. Consecutive approvals can be applied for. Dean s List: To qualify for the Dean s List, a student must earn a 3.5 GPA in 15 or more credits. Recognition certificates are mailed by The Academic & Career Advising Office each semester to students who achieve this honor. Degree Requirements: Requirements prescribed by an institution for completion of a program of study are generally termed degree requirements. Requirements may include a minimum number of hours, required GPA, General Education Requirements, prerequisites, required course, and elective courses within the specified program of study. Degrees: Degrees are awarded for the successful completion of a prescribed program of study. There are 3 basic types of degrees: Associate - obtainable at a community or junior college, Baccalaureate or Bachelor s offered by four-year colleges and universities, and Graduate post-baccalaureate degrees (i.e. Master s and Doctorate degrees) offered through graduate schools. Degree Evaluation/Degree Audit/Graduation Audit: This type of evaluation may be referred to in one of the previously mentioned titles. It is an evaluation of how much a student has completed in a particular Program of Study (major) and how much is left to complete in that program. A student can obtain this evaluation by visiting with an Academic Advisor, or by following the instructions on their MyPage under Academic & Career Advising. DegreeWorks: A web-based checklist (academic audit) which allows students and Academic Advisors to track progress towards degree completion and graduation. It is accessible to students via their MyPage. Department: A department is the basic organizational unit in a higher education institution, and is responsible for the academic functions in a field of study. It may also be used in the broader sense to indicate an administrative or service unit of an institution. Developmental Courses: Pre-college level courses designed to improve basic skills for academic success such as Reading, Writing, Math and ESL (English as a Second-Language.) Courses numbered below 1000 do not count towards degree completion. Diploma: Designed for entry level employment, generally credit hours. Disability Resource Center: The campus department that provides numerous services and accommodations for students with documented disabilities. To become eligible for services, students must complete an application, and provide qualified medical and/or psychological documentation of their disabilities. Distance Education: Courses from across the college offered in technology supported formats including, Internet, Ednet, and Blended classes (part in class/part internet). Also known as SLCC Online. Division: A division represents a number of different units of a college or university: (1) an administrative division of an institution usually consists of more than one department; (2) an academic division of an institution based on the year-level of students, lower division and upper division. Drop: If a student decides not to remain enrolled in a class, it is the student s responsibility to drop the class by the deadline (usually within the first 2 weeks of class and posted on the Academic Calendar) which may result in a tuition adjustment or refund. The course will not appear on the transcript after it has been dropped.

Early Enrollment: Academically qualified junior and senior high school students who complete the appropriate paper work may be approved to take college classes on the college campus while still attending high school. Regular college tuition and fees apply. Early High School Graduate: A SLCC applicant who has a high school diploma or has completed the GED and is 16 yrs. of age or younger is considered an Early High School Graduate. At SLCC, the student s parent or guardian must complete a Parent Permission Form giving the student permission to enroll in classes in addition to the standard application process. Education Plan/Course Plan: Once a student knows their starting courses for Math and English, they can create a plan for the completion of their entire degree, often with the help of an Academic Advisor. In addition to placement test scores, other things to consider when making a plan are the requirements of the program, the length of time the student wants to be in school, if they are attending full-time or part-time, if they are attending summers, and additional time commitments that they have (work, family, etc.). Extra-Curricular Activities : These are non-classroom activities that can contribute to a well-rounded education. They can include such activities as athletics, clubs, student government, recreational and social organizations, and events. FAFSA: The FAFSA application is the first step in obtaining Financial Aid and is the abbreviation for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Fees: Fees are additional charges not included in the tuition. Final Exams (Finals): These end-of-the-semester exams are either given during the last week of classes each semester or during a specific week called "Finals Week." Final exams given during Finals Week are given on specified dates that may be different than the regular class time. Finals schedules are published on the Academic Calendar. Financial Aid: Aid for paying college expenses is made available from grants, scholarships, loans and part-time employment from federal, state, institutional and private sources. Financial aid from these programs may be combined in an "award package" to meet or defray from the cost of education. The types and amounts of aid awarded are based upon financial need, available funds, student classification, academic performance, and sometimes the timeliness of application. Flex Class: A student may enroll in an internet, flexible entry format class, when it is convenient for them to start. Completion of the course must be done in 15 weeks from the start date. Math 1010 and Math 1050 are sometimes offered in this format. Focused Tutoring: One-on-one and small group tutoring that meets weekly throughout the semester. Students must commit to weekly attendance. Students or advisors can submit a Request for Tutor form to apply. Fulltime Enrollment/Part-Time Enrollment: A full-time student is enrolled in 12 or more credit hours in a semester. At SLCC tuition is the same for credits. A part-time student is enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours in a semester and tuition is based on total credit hours. General Education/General Requirements: Courses which teach basic skills as well as broaden a student s knowledge of a wide range of subjects. These courses focus on communication, creativity and critical thinking

along with the substance of the course s information, an appreciation of the esthetics of the area of study, and its connection to the larger social web. All Associate Degrees require general education courses. (GE) Certificate of Completion: A (GE) Certificate of Completion can be issued upon completion of all General Education Requirements (approximately 34 cr.). For those students not completing an AS or AA degree, this Certificate of Completion will be accepted by all Utah public institutions of higher education as satisfying their lower division General Education Requirements for a bachelor s degree. Students pursuing a General Education Certificate of Completion should declare the General Studies AS as their program of study unless they have identified another AA/AS degree. Upon completion of the requirements, students should go to their MyPage and apply for graduation and pay the fee to be awarded this certificate. GPA (Grade Point Average): The GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points (grade points) earned by the number of hours attempted for which grades of A,B,C,D, or E were earned. This number is then rounded off to two decimal places. Each semester the GPA for the semester and the cumulative GPA (grades from all semesters) are indicated on the student transcript. A student must have a 2.0 Cum. GPA to graduate from SLCC. High Honors Graduates: Students who complete coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or above will be awarded High Honors at graduation. A letter from the graduation office will automatically be sent informing students how to get their Honor Cords for Commencement. Honors Graduates: Students who complete coursework with a cumulative GPA between 3.5 and 3.79 will be awarded Honors at graduation. A letter from the graduation office will automatically be sent informing students how to get their Honor Cords for Commencement. Humanities Courses: Humanities courses are classes that cover subjects such as literature, philosophy, foreign languages, and the fine arts. Most undergraduate degrees require a certain number of humanities credit hours. IB (International Baccalaureate) Examination Credit: High School students enrolled in an IB program who achieve scores of 5, 6, or 7 on Higher Level International Baccalaureate (IB) Examinations (similar to AP exams) may be awarded up to eight semester hours of credit in each Higher Level exam. Students who complete the IB Diploma earn 30 semester credits. Incoming Transfer Student: Students who have earned credits at another college or university may be able to use that credit at SLCC. Official transcripts from the transfer institution must be submitted and a Request for Evaluation Form completed. Incomplete: Incomplete grades may be given by instructors to students who cannot continue in class because of circumstances beyond their control (such as serious illness, death in the family, or change of employment) with proper documentation. A student must be passing the class at the time of the incomplete grade request and a substantial portion of the course must be completed. Upon receiving the I grade, the student must work directly with the instructor to create a contract for completing the class work. Installment Plan: At SLCC students may pay tuition using an installment plan. It is called the Semester Tuition Installment Loan (STIL). Students complete an application, and pay a $30.00 application fee with a down payment. The remainder of tuition is due in monthly installments.

International Student: Someone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident will need or be applying for a temporary non-immigrant visa. Separate application required. SLCC accepts international students who have satisfactorily completed secondary school. SLCC is authorized to issue the I-20 form (letter stating student is qualified to attend SLCC and which they use to get a student visa) to qualified non-immigrant students. Learning Center: Free tutoring services on a drop-in basis. Learning Center hosts: Student Writing Center, ESL Conversation Lab, Reading Center, and free computer access. Lower Division: Courses numbered 1000 and 2000 that are typically taught during the freshman and sophomore years. Major/Pre-Major: A major is a specific area of study focusing on one defined discipline which includes a related set of academic courses. Pre-major courses are preparatory courses required as a foundation for upper-division work in a major. Matriculated Student: Matriculated students are seeking to complete a degree (and not just taking classes for personal interest). It requires an application. Minor: Optional part of a baccalaureate degree program in a defined discipline including a related set of academic courses usually including lower and upper division course requirements. Minor requirements are distinct from the major and require fewer hours. A minor is relevant to a Bachelor s degree but not to an AS or AA. MyPage: Comprehensive website serving the needs of the SLCC community. MyPage allows students to view their semester class schedule, register for classes, pay tuition, etc. Requires user name and password. New Century Scholarship: Created in 1999 by the Utah Legislature to provide scholarship opportunities to Utah students who earn their Associate s Degree while still in high school by the end of their senior year with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Scholarship is worth 75% of tuition costs for up to two semesters (60 credits) at any USHE institution (as current funding allows). BYU or Westminster transfer student receives 75% of average state institution tuition cost. Optional Practical Training (OPT): When an International Student who is in the United States on a visa nears graduation from SLCC, in order to remain in the country and obtain work experience in their field of study after graduation, they must request that their Academic Advisor write a letter regarding their status to be sent to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If approved, they may be allowed to stay up to one year to obtain this experience, but it does depend on their major. A form letter is available from Academic & Career Advising. Orientation: An introduction to SLCC designed to help students get started and take advantage of the services, facilities, and opportunities available at SLCC. New students directly from high school are mandated to attend an Orientation before they can register. Prior to open registration, other new students will be eligible to register before open registration if they have attended. Available in-person (QuickConnect), online (NetConnect) or in summer workshop (CampusConnect). Placement Test: Accuplacer is used by SLCC as the official Computerized Placement Test for all matriculated students without recent ACT or SAT scores or appropriate transfer credit. Mandatory for enrollment into English or Math courses. Scores from ACT, SAT, or Accuplacer must be less than one year old to register for Math classes and less than two years old to register for English classes.

Prerequisites: A course or requirement that must be completed prior to another given course. Prerequisites indicate the curriculum building blocks to proceed to the advanced courses. Departments will block registration if prerequisites have not been met. President s List: To qualify for the President s List, a student must earn a 3.8 GPA or higher in 15 or more credits in one semester. Re-application: Students who have been away from SLCC longer than two years must re-apply for admission and follow the current catalog requirements. Registrar: The registrar of an institution is responsible for maintaining all academic records. Duties may also include maintenance of class enrollments, providing statistical information on student enrollment, certification of athletic eligibility, student eligibility for honor rolls, certification of the eligibility of veterans, administering probation and retention policies, and verification of the completion of degree requirements for graduation. Registration: Is complete when student enrolls in one or more courses and tuition and fees are paid in full or payment arrangements have been made. Available dates and deadlines are published in the current Academic Calendar. Repeat Courses: A student may repeat a course in which a low grade has been received. Upon completion of the class, once the new grade is posted, the repeated course will be excluded (marked with an E on SHACRSE) and the new grade will be included (marked as I). A Repeated Class Notification form must be completed and turned in to The Office of the Registrar and Academic Records if the course has ever been repeated previously and excluded. The original grade remains on the transcript, but is marked as repeated and removed from the GPA calculation. Some 4-year majors have a specific limit on how many times a course can be repeated and which course they will use in their calculations. Resident/Non-resident Status: The amount of tuition a student pays to a public (state supported) college is determined by the student s state residence status. If a student is a resident of the state, then the student pays a lower tuition rate. A non-resident will pay a higher tuition rate. A Utah resident is defined as someone who: 1) has lived in Utah for at least the last 12 continuous months; 2) is not claimed as a dependent for tax purposes by anyone out of state; 3) has established domiciliary ties to Utah with proof of: (1) Utah Driver s license, (2) Utah vehicle registration, and (3) evidence of 12 months of continuously living in Utah with rental or mortgage documentation or utility billing statements. Restricted Major: Restricted majors usually require an additional departmental admissions application beyond the regular admissions application. Restricted majors may have required pre-major courses, GPA, outside activities, and deadline requirements. Semester: A term which includes 15 weeks of instruction during fall and spring. SLCC s summer term is a semester condensed into 12 or less weeks. Departments may opt to offer condensed semesters offering 15 weeks of curriculum at a more rapid pace in a shorter amount of time. Senior Citizen Enrollment: Utah residents 62 year of age or older can enroll in any regular class offered if there is surplus space, it is taken as an audit, and they pay $10.00 registration fee each semester. Senior citizens desiring college credit to complete a degre follow regular admissions procedures and pay full tuition and fees.

Schedule of Classes: SLCC electronically publishes a Class Schedule for each semester of classes. Students make up their own individual class schedules for each semester they are enrolled. Courses are designated in the Class Schedule by course department, course number, time and days the course meets, the room number and building name, and the instructor s name. A tool called Schedule Planner is available when a student logs in to MyPage. School of Applied Technology/SAT: Another way to obtain work skills is through The School of Applied Technology. SAT offers open-entry/open-exit, competency-based, non-credit courses, and student support services. Students are admitted to SAT programs weekly or as scheduled and as openings allow. Students complete when they demonstrate competencies. Student Identification Card (I.D.): The SLCC OneCard is the official student ID of Salt Lake Community College. It gives students instant access to all Financial Aid and or Campus Funds through a pre-paid Discover Card debit account. Students must be registered (enrolled in classes) to obtain a OneCard. It is a nontransferable picture ID card and is required for admittance to many functions sponsored by the college. It is also required in the library, computer labs, athletic facilities, academic advising, etc. Syllabus: A course syllabus is summary of the course. It usually contains specific information about the course; information on how to contact the instructor, including the instructors office location and office hours; an outline of what will be covered in the course, with a schedule of test dates and the due dates for assignments; the grading policy for the course; and specific classroom rules. It is usually given to each student during the first class session. Transcript: The transcript is a permanent academic record of a student at a college. It may show courses attempted, grades received, academic status, and honors received. Colleges do not release transcripts if a student owes any money to the college. Transfer of Credits: Some students attend more than one institution during their college careers and will wish for accumulated credit hours from the former institution to transfer to the new one. To transfer credits, a student must have an official transcript sent to the new institution, which will determine which courses will apply toward graduation requirements. Transfer Student: To be considered a transfer student at a receiving institution, a student must have accumulated 30 college credits numbered 1000 or above and meet minimum GPA requirements for that institution. Students who wish to transfer with less than 30 college credits will be required to meet the same admissions criteria as a student applying directly from high school. TRiO/Student Support Services: A set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that work in partnership with students to achieve academic success, improve student retention and promote personal growth. To be eligible a student must be a 1) a first generation student who meets federal low income guidelines, 2) a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and 3) plan on graduating with an Associate s Degree from SLCC and transferring to a 4-year institution. Tuition: Tuition is the amount paid for each credit hour of enrollment. Tuition does not include the cost of books, fees or room and board. Tuition charges vary from college to college and are dependent on such factors as resident or out-of-state status, level of classes enrolled in (lower, upper or graduate division), and whether the institution is publicly or privately financed.

Tutors: A tutor is a person, generally another student, who has completed and/or demonstrated proficiency in a course or subject, and is able to provide instruction to another student. Tutors usually help students better understand course material and make better grades. Undergraduate: An undergraduate is a student who is pursuing either a certificate or an Associate or Baccalaureate degree. University: A university is composed of undergraduate, graduate, and professional colleges and offers degrees in each. University Center: SLCC s University Center, in coordination with 4-year institutions, offers a limited number of bachelor degrees on campus at SLCC that may be completed in the evening. The University Center will be disbanded and its functions moved to other departments Summer Upper Division: Courses numbered 3000 and higher, taught at 4-year institutions typically during the junior and senior years. SLCC does not offer upper division courses. Withdrawal: Students may withdraw from courses during a semester (after the final drop date), but there are established procedures for doing so. The college catalog and/or Class Schedule generally specifies the procedures. It will require a signature from both the instructor and Division Chair. Classes from which a student withdraws are usually listed on the student s transcript, and the student is responsible for paying the tuition and fees for the class.
