Hosted by UNOPS, it is a unique platform for international urban development cooperation, bringing together key actors including national governments, bilateral donors, multilateral organisations, associations of cities and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The Cities Alliance aims at supporting cities, local governments and their partners in the developing world in addressing challenges to capture the gains of urbanisation and taking advantage of its opportunities, for the benefit of all citizens. The Secretariat, which is based in Brussels, carries out the Cities Alliance Work Programme and manages its day-to-day operations by providing services to Members and facilitating their involvement in its corporate activities. DAAD, Section The candidate will be integrated in the Programme Team of the Secretariat to support ongoing operational and analytical activities of the Cities Alliance. This refers specifically to the Country Programmes in Uganda, Ghana, Viet Nam, Burkina Faso Ethiopia and Mozambique focusing on land, services and active citizenship for the urban poor. Current activities of the Programme Team include: Deepening gender equality across all aspects of its Country Programmes. Incorporating climate resilience in municipal development strategies of Country Programmes. Mapping of barriers to equitable urban economic growth and jobs in the above mentioned countries. The specific scope of work for this internship will include, but not be limited to, the following interrelated tasks: Provide substantive support to the Programme Team s conceptual and operational activities. Produce knowledge products on Cities Alliance activities, e.g. documentation, lessons learned. Deliver distinct inputs, such as case studies and good practices, to be used for Cities Alliance s current activities and knowledge products at key policy advocacy forums such as Habitat III and Take responsibility for the production of an article on a chosen Cities Alliance activity for dissemination, including through the corporate website

Training components and learning elements The internship is designed to provide training on the job. By contributing to the mainstreaming of gender equality, resilience and understandings of city economies in the Country Programmes, the candidate will be able to enhance his or her qualifications for a career in international development or policy-oriented research. Moreover, the candidate will have access to the online training opportunities provided by UNOPS. Based in Brussels the candidate will be offered to attend various networking and thematic events being organised by CA members and partners, the European Commission and other stakeholders and to work in an international and cosmopolitan environment. It undertakes work in the technical, legal, economic, social and ecological arena. Dating back to 1815, the CCNR is the oldest international organization in modern history. Nowadays, many of the CCNR s activities extend beyond the Rhine and relate by extension to all European inland waterways. The CCNR collaborates closely with the European Commission as well as other river commissions and international organizations. It has five member states (Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland) and is headquartered in Strasbourg, France. Working languages are German, French and Dutch. The Rhine is the principal axis of inland navigation in Europe. More than 2/3 of the goods transported on inland waterways are carried by this river. Project: The Economic Barriers to Greener Inland Waterway Transport In its VISION 2018 for sustainable inland navigation, the CCNR aims to significantly reduce air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from inland navigation. On the EU level, the European Commission has defined higher environmental performance of inland waterway transport in the field air pollutant emissions as a key area of its NAIADES II action program for the period Whereas regulatory actions in the field of air pollutant emission limits for new engines are being taken, economic barriers (in the wider sense) to the greening of the existing inland navigation fleet remain high. The intern will contribute to the continued analysis of these barriers in the framework of the CCNR Economic Committee and develop policy proposals for overcoming these barriers. The intern will execute or contribute to the following tasks: - Researching and summarizing economic barriers to the greening of the existing inland navigation fleet and to the implementation of measures identified in the CCNR s CO 2 report, incl. issues such as investment costs for cleaner engines, availability of private and public funding, alternative fuel price developments, supply infrastructure, and availability of information. - Analysing underlying reasons for identified barriers. - Developing policy proposals for overcoming these barriers, for instance on incentive systems for eco-innovations and new financial instruments, in due

Given the wide scope of this project, the contents will be further specified according to the actual needs of the CCNR and the interests of the selected intern. The CCNR Secretariat is a meeting point of national delegations, partner institutions, inland navigation experts and stakeholders. High-level meetings of CCNR committees and round tables with external guests take place regularly. The intern will be encouraged and given room to attend such events. They provide excellent learning opportunities as regards the functioning of an international organization and multilateral decision-making in Europe. By attending such events, the intern will also be able to build up knowledge on a number of economic and technical issues of inland navigation according to his/her interests. Box Vienna, Austria Placement Offer Dates/duration , 6 months Supervisor Detailed description of the internship project(s); tasks assigned Martin Kalinowski, Chief, Capacity Building and Training Section The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test- Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the Treaty banning any nuclear weapon test explosion or any other nuclear explosions. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including the International Monitoring System (IMS), a network of 321 stations worldwide, a Global Communication Infrastructure (GCI), an International Data Centre (IDC) and on-site inspections to monitor compliance. The International Data Centre Division (IDC) operates the IMS and GCI, produces monitoring-related products, distributes IMS data and IDC products to State Signatories, and interfaces to National Data Centres and Station operators. An important goal for the future development of the IDC is to establish an automatic system to monitor the accuracy and determine a confidence level of pipeline product generation to alert for human review and intervention and develop methods to continuously improve automatic product confidence. The internship project contributes to a component of this automatic system to determine levels of confidence in automatic processing. This contribution will be selected together with the candidate according to his/her qualifications. The choice will be between the automatic processing pipelines for measurements into reportable events for one of the sensor technologies (seismic, infrasound, hydroacoustic, radionuclide particulates and radio-xenon).
