4 Leaders in Leadership Almost every major nursing organization has been led by an FPB graduate, including: International Council of Nurses Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing American Academy of Nursing National Black Nurses Association, Inc. American Nurses Association American Association of Colleges of Nursing Canadian Nurses Association Across the country, more than 35 former and current deans of nursing schools are alumni, plus five are international. Alumni lead nursing programs at University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and North Shore University LIJ, to name a few. Many of our faculty members are fellows of the American Academy of Nursing, as well as Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The school of nursing is proud to have 15 endowed professorships the highest honor in academia more than any other nursing school in the country. Home to Innovation FPB is home to the nation s first practice doctorate in nursing, the first acute care nurse practitioner program, first gerontological nursing program, first BSN perioperative requirement, first BSN with informatics in all four years, and the first advanced practice flight nursing program. 5 Areas of research and training include symptom science, family/community care, aging across the lifespan, self-management of health and illness, and neuroscience. Nursing Science at its Best At Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, nurse scientists have transformed how newborns are handled at birth. They have bolstered the use of nurse managers and monitored the health of caregiving grandmothers. They were the first to create internet dialogues between patients and the first to teach patients to talk to clinicians using electronic avatars. At FPB, we continue this legacy of innovation and prepare nurse scientists to meet the ever-changing health care, through our five focused research areas. Symptom Science Investigations that identify molecular and genetic pathways, apply innovative measurement approaches, and test symptom management strategies in clinical trials are the foci of symptom research in the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Family/Community Care The family and community research area focuses on mental and physical health of individual family members and diverse family systems across various health care systems and communities. Research ranges from exploration through testing of interventions to promote and sustain health in family members and family and community systems. With the changing landscape of health care and increasing demands on family systems, this research is critical for innovative, cost-effective care. 3

6 Aging Across the Lifespan Aging across the lifespan research focuses on maintaining and improving health, functional status and quality of life. Emphasis is on successful aging, even in the face of morbidity and frailty. Utilizing an interdisciplinary perspective, our programs of research encompass a range of bio-psychosocial approaches, including psychological, cognitive, behavioral, physiological, genetic, sociological, and emerging, integrated models. Self-Management of Health and Illness Self-management of health and illness places the individual/family as the primary provider of care for acute and chronic illness and responsible for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Our experts study self-management in multiple health conditions, throughout the lifespan, and in populations with significant health disparities. Neuroscience Acknowledging that the brain controls every aspect of our identity and how we respond to events around us, neuroscience researchers at the school of nursing focus on brain and nervous system function. Our programs of research include the study of disordered sleep, substance abuse, and neurodegenerative disease. 7 World Class Clinicals The School of Nursing is recognized for having clinical and research partnerships, second to none, with four prominent hospital systems, three of which are within walking distance from the school. Both our undergraduate and graduate students fulfill their clinical duties at local world-class hospitals or at one of Northeast Ohio s hundreds of nonprofit agencies. Some graduate programs may allow students to complete clinical training at their own nearby facilities. Expanding our Global Reach The School of Nursing is home to the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Research and Clinical Training in Home Care Nursing. The center is one of 10 WHO Collaborating Centers in the US and one of 38 in the world. We work with the WHO and the Global Network of WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery Development. Our students have a number of opportunities to study or conduct clinical or service projects abroad (recent sites include Guatemala, Denmark, Ireland, China and Nicaragua). Undergraduate students are able to take two to three additional courses to receive a Global Health Certificate. We also partner with prestigious universities around the world, such as Aichi Medical University in Japan, where there is extension of our flight nursing program the first of its kind in Asia. 5

8 FPB is home to the nation s first practice doctorate in nursing, the first acute care nurse practitioner program, and the first advanced practice flight nursing program. Programs Offered Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) WHO SHOULD APPLY: Undergraduate students (first-year or transfer). CAREER PATH: Careers in health care systems, nonprofit agencies, and other organizations. Offers students nearly double the national average of clinical hours, research opportunities, and service learning at home and abroad. Students admitted directly into the nursing program; nursing courses and clinicals begin in the first semester. Renewable partial-tuition scholarships awarded to first-year BSN students. Graduate Entry (Master of Nursing MN) WHO SHOULD APPLY: Individuals with a non-nursing bachelor s degrees seeking careers in advanced nursing practice and/or research. CAREER PATH: Prepares students for RN licensure and pursuit of an MSN, DNP, and/or PhD. Pre-licensure phase focuses on quality and safety and awards an advanced generalist Master of Nursing (MN). Students receive about 14 credits toward an MSN. 6

9 Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Post-Master s Certificates WHO SHOULD APPLY: BSN and MN-prepared nurses CAREER PATH: Career advancement; opportunities to prepare for roles as nurse practitioners, anesthetists, midwives, or clinical nurse specialists. Most courses available in intensive, online, or weekend formats. Students have the option to blend majors to create custom programs, such as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner/ Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, and to pursue joint master s degree opportunities with other schools at the university. The Oncology/Palliative Care subspecialty can be done with most MSN majors. Flight Nursing subspecialty can be added to Acute Care majors Post-master s certificates are available in most of the majors, as well. Majors include: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Education with Population Focus Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Family Systems Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Nurse Anesthesia Nurse Midwifery Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care Women s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) WHO SHOULD APPLY: Master s-prepared nurses. CAREER PATH: Leadership in nursing practice, health system administration, and clinical research. Offered in intensive formats on- and off-site; choice of practice or educational leadership electives. Dual Doctorate DNP/PhD program available Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) WHO SHOULD APPLY: MN, MSN and BSN nurses. CAREER PATH: Researcher, scientist, and/or university-level faculty member. Optional education track available that focuses on skills for teaching and mentoring. Learn more: fpb.case.edu/studentservices/financialaid.shtm Our Legacy: Frances Payne Bolton Health Care Reformer, Congresswoman, Philanthropist ( ) Frances Payne Bolton was the first woman to be elected from Ohio to Congress and the first congresswoman to represent the United States in the United Nations General Assembly. In 1943, she created a widespread awareness of the critical importance of the field of nursing by sponsoring the Bolton Act, which introduced the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps. Bolton believed that the role of the nurse was not only caring for the sick but also teaching health and that nurses bring light, easement, intelligence, and understanding where there [is] darkness. 8
