1 CDS MONARCH Family Education Training Schedule Topics of Discussion August-December Hard Road Webster, NY Family Education and Training provides trainings to families of individuals under the age of 18. The purpose of these sessions is to enhance the decision making capacity of the family unit, provide orientation regarding the nature and impact of developmental disabilities upon the individual and his or her family, and to inform families about available services. Family Education and Training offers a variety of educational and informative sessions. For questions regarding Family Education Training, or to register for FET, please contact your Service Coordinator. Your Service Coordinator must contact Marissa Mynter, Program Coordinator, at (585) or marissa.mynter@cdsmonarch.org to register individuals for all FET sessions. All sessions are held at: CDS Monarch, Inc. 860 Hard Rd. Webster, NY Please note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, FET topics and dates are subject to revision. This schedule also reflects that some trainings are pending facilitator confirmation. Therefore, updated FET schedules will be forwarded should changes occur. Sept. 1, 2015 Wandering and Elopement Strategies Never Say Never Stables This session will provide a presentation and demonstrations on strategies to support your child s wandering and elopement behaviors. You will gain a better understanding of this behavior s triggers. This session focuses on an alternative way to help serve at-risk youth, children with Autism, Aspberger s, ADHD, OCD, GAD, Cerebral Palsy, developmental disabilities, Downs Syndrome, visual or hearing impairment, physical disabilities, learning difficulties, social or emotional challenges, as well as children and teens facing life transitions such as divorce, loss, neglect, abuse or trauma Dr. David McAdam Jill Aldrich Charlene Gardner Date/Time Topic Topic Overview Presenter Tues. Sept. 15, 2015 Wednesday Sept. 16, 2015 Coming Together Through Sib Shop and Parent Support Groups Aquatic Therapy 101 Exercise vs Diagnosis This session will introduce families to Parent Support Group Services and Sib Shop. Presenters will focus on the benefits to each program, activities, topics, meeting times and registration process. This session will provide information on how viscosity of water provides resistance for strength training and why warm water stimulates body awareness, balance, and trunk stability. Sept. 29, 2015 Understanding Challenging Behavior Power of Theatre This session looks at what happens before, during and after a behavior occurs to help understand the purpose of behavior. We explore different types of motivators as well as ideas on how to address challenging behaviors and implement positive behavioral support techniques for the child with disabilities. This session will focus on the abilities individuals have in expressing themselves through acting and singing along with the benefits theatre provides for mental, emotional, social and physical well-being. Oct. 20, 2015 School Advocacy and Navigating Your Child s IEP Person Centered and Strength Based Approach to Art Benefits to Early Intervention This session discusses awareness of services provided to children with developmental disabilities in the school system and how to advocate for them with particular focus on your child s IEP. This session will explain how a person centered and strength based approach to art is a unique and valuable approach to allowing your child to experience their creativity. This session will focus on the importance to early intervention, how to obtain early intervention, and what to look for when searching for early intervention services. Nov. 10, 2015 Massage, Touch and Cranial Therapy Fire and Kitchen Safety During The Holidays This session will explore how massage, touch and cranial therapies are effective in the treatment of disorders such as Autism, Learning Disabilities, Tourette s, TBI, Down Syndrome, Sensory, Anxiety, Speech Delays, Motor Fine and Gross Delays, Behaviors, etc This session is led by Kim Corpus, CPMS, the only pediatric/adolescent certified massage practitioner & educator in Rochester, NY This session covers basic information and strategies on kitchen and fire safety with your child during the holidays. Presentation of online links for parents to utilize will be given. Time for questions or concerns from parents will be provided.
