4 Background Principles of scientific honesty and the observance of good scientific practice are essential Principles can be violated in many ways from a lack of care to serious misconduct Rules are binding Rules alone can not prevent dishonesty Awareness is important

9 1. General principles of scientific conduct Relations with colleagues and cooperation - No hindrance of work of competitors - Active promotion of junior scientist s qualifications - Openness to criticism - Careful, non-self-interested and unprejudiced assessment of colleagues; avoidance of bias

General principles of scientific conduct Publication of results - Publication on principle (public money) - Publication of falsified hypotheses and admission of mistakes - Strict honest in recognition and appropriate consideration of the contributions of predecesors, competitors and colleages

14 3. Guidance for junior scientists - Doctoral thesis committees (two outside experienced scientists) - Good scientific practice

15 4. Securing and storing primary data - Data and Reports must be stored at least ten years on durable, secure carriers at the institute Data is property of the Max Planck Society Lab books, data, etc. are to remain in the house.
