3 Learning Environment (Cluster) / Practice Experience Philosophy or Mission Statement The Outpatient team of trained Nurses, healthcare workers and receptionists takes the welfare of our patients seriously and we are committed to providing you with the support during your journey through our department. Description of the Service we provide and Client groups who may access it: Broad range of outpatient clinics covering medicine, surgery and ophthalmology Wide range of patients of all ages from babies/children in eye clinics through to the very elderly. Other areas of interest and related experience available Observe cataract surgery on Wainwright Ward. See multidisciplinary team in action and gain understanding of their roles. Observe specialist nurses at work e.g. Breast, Colorectal, Diabetic, CPAP nurses. Observe role of dietician, chiropodist, and orthoptist. Visits can be arranged to Medical imaging or Flexible sigmoidoscopy in Endoscopy, a morning in ENT (ear, nose and throat) department, or to Day Theatre to see pain anaesthetist giving Facet joint injections or epidurals. 4 LEARNER INFORMATION Work Pattern (eg Shift patterns, start & finish times) Dress / Uniform Code Staff room / Rest Room facilities Monday Friday. Morning clinics currently start at 0900 and afternoon at Lunch break is 30 minutes. As per hospital policy. Black shoes, hair off collar etc. Staff room available to eat packed lunch. The staff hot drinks kitty costs 2 per month if you wish to join. You will need to fill in a form and provide a photograph to get a Staff Door pass for duration of your placement. The form for this will be included in your Welcome Pack Bring your own small padlock for a staff locker Library / IT Resources Induction / Orientation Programmes Welcome Folder Library is located on ground floor of Education Centre building other side of hospital site. Computers are available there for research. Computers are also available in the Nurses Station Room in Outpatients once you have attended a computer session and been given a Log on for Winchester Students are given a welcome information pack with a timetable for the placement and helpful information concerning the clinics they will encounter. An evaluation sheet is included. All students are given a departmental tour and induction The Trust arranges and invites all students on placement in HHFT to attend an induction session- details of this will be sent to students approx. 2-4 weeks prior to the placement starting Student Tutorial / Seminar Programme (if available) Abbreviations / Glossary relevant to this area Prior recommended reading / websites / resources Common assessments / interventions / procedures / Friday afternoon teaching sessions are available and timetable is on notice board in Back Office of Outpatients OPD Outpatient Department NMC code of Conduct, anatomy of appropriate body systems covered by various clinics e.g. eye, skin, vascular system, respiratory, alimentary system etc Measuring height, weight, BMI, pulse, blood pressure, blood glucose testing and urinalysis. 5 treatments / evaluations dressings, Spirometry, ECGs, Sigmoidoscopy rigid and flexible, patch testing, minor skin operations, full neurological examinations. Core biopsy or Fine needle aspiration of breast or thyroid, pain management injections, compression bandaging for leg ulcers, minor eye surgery Common conditions seen Wide range of medical and surgical and eye conditions covered by following clinics Medical: respiratory, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrine and diabetes, haematology, dermatology, neurology, and oncology Surgical: vascular, leg ulcer, breast, colorectal, upper gastrointestinal surgery, urology, pain management, Eyes: wide variety of conditions including minor operations within department a and also opportunity to go to see cataract surgery Specific areas of expertise/clinical skills which students can observe / learn from / Practice LIST of LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES available in main hub placement area Measuring height, weight, BMI, pulse, blood pressure, and urinalysis. Communication in all forms underpins everything. Observe giving bad news to patients. Already detailed above. Full range of medical, surgical and eye clinics allow development of knowledge of range of medical conditions. Whole variety of procedures and tests and examinations according to the relevant medical condition. This placement allows students to gain insight into the patient s journey from initial GP consultation onwards.
