1 Boston, MA Mass- NAHN Aspiring Leader Mentorship Program The National Association of Hispanic Nurses is a non- profit professional association committed to the promotion of the professionalism and dedication of Hispanic nurses and is also dedicated to the improvement of the quality of health and nursing care of Hispanic consumers

2 Boston, MA MENTORING A one to one trusting relationship that encompasses formal or informal supporting, guiding, coaching, teaching, role modeling, counseling, advocating and networking of an individual. Mentoring promotes co- sharing, co- discovery, and co- growth. Purpose To support the growth and development of nurses within professional practice To foster the development of a strong nursing community To enhance leadership knowledge, skills and attributes MENTOR An expert interested and committed to a supportive relationship with a nurse for the purpose of enhancing the professional growth and development of that individual. MENTEE A nurse with the desire and ability to learn, accept counseling, be guided and advised for career advancement. The individual also has an ability to identify personal and professional career goals. (American Nurses Association, 2010) The National Association of Hispanic Nurses is a non- profit professional association committed to the promotion of the professionalism and dedication of Hispanic nurses and is also dedicated to the improvement of the quality of health and nursing care of Hispanic consumers

3 Boston, MA Aspiring Leader Mentorship Program A yearlong program that provides mentorship to a Hispanic nurse participating within the Aspiring Leaders Fellowship Program for career advancement in nursing leadership in the fields of health care policy, nursing administration and academia. The yearlong program will provide the nurse with a lived experience of the many roles, responsibilities, knowledge and skills central to leadership in healthcare. I. Mentor Criteria A. Characteristics of a Mentor Displays commitment to nurses and to the nursing profession Demonstrates strong knowledge, judgment, skill and caring in their domain of practice Is credible and respected by colleagues, the organization and the community Uses an ethical framework to guide professional practice and interpersonal relationships Uses a strong and diverse network to collaborate with others Demonstrates effective negotiation and conflict- resolution skills B. Role of Mentor in Mentorship Participation within an online webinar on best practices for mentorship Meet with the mentee for a minimum of 2 hours per month Provide the mentee networking experiences that connect him/her to a community of nurse leaders Facilitate attendance at professional organizational meetings Provide career guidance and motivational support to promote success Assist and guide the mentee through a leadership project selected by the mentee Engage in a teaching- learning environment centered on the mentee The National Association of Hispanic Nurses is a non- profit professional association committed to the promotion of the professionalism and dedication of Hispanic nurses and is also dedicated to the improvement of the quality of health and nursing care of Hispanic consumers

Benefits of a Mentorship Experience Mentors who have undergone an experience of having provided mentorship to a nurse involved in career transition report numerous personal and professional benefits associated with the role: An increased in career satisfaction because it enables mentors to assist and shape the professional and personal development of mentees plus satisfaction in helping others A continued commitment to learning as they stay on the cutting edge A sharpening of interpersonal and political skills Assistance with work load (e.g., projects, if these projects mesh with the mentee s learning goals) An increase in networking and experience of collegiality A facilitation of their professional development though reflection or reappraisal of beliefs, practices, ideas and or values. II. Mentee Criteria A. Characteristics of a Mentee A Hispanic nurse interested in nursing leadership: nursing administration, health policy and academia Openness to mutuality Intelligence Ambition and a strong desire to learn Loyalty and commitment to the organization Good communication skills Able to take initiative Career commitment Self- identity The National Association of Hispanic Nurses is a non- profit professional association committed to the promotion of the professionalism and dedication of Hispanic nurses and is also dedicated to the improvement of the quality of health and nursing care of Hispanic consumers

Role of the Mentee Complete an application of interest with resume (see Appendix A) Meet with the mentor for a minimum of 2 hours per month Participate within networking opportunities or organizational meetings with the mentor Maintain a journal of experiences Complete a leadership project of choice and present the project at the completion of the mentorship fellowship at a MASS- NAHN general meeting C. Project Criteria The main goal of the leadership project is to provide an experience to develop the knowledge and skills of the mentee in identifying patient issues within safety, quality and delivery of care. The project should lead the mentee in learning the steps and measures for conducting initiatives that produce quantifiable results for promoting improvement of patient outcomes. The mentee may conduct a leadership project of choice within the selected mentorship: nursing administration, health policy or academia. The mentee will also present the project at one of the Mass- NAHN general meetings upon completion. III. Evaluation The mentorship fellowship program will be evaluated through the following measures: A survey of the mentorship will be provided to the mentor(s) and the mentee(s) A thematic analysis of the self- reflection portrayed within the mentee s journal will be conducted (consent and IRA approval will be obtained) A survey will be provided to the mentee to evaluate leadership competencies learned. IV.
