The Challenge Why = theory Basic Building Blocks How = practice Integrate Theory and Practice to help managers understand the challenges, opportunities, and risks involved in information technology management. It examines the issues involved in acquiring information systems that support and maintain business operations in an efficient, effective, and ethical manner.the course also examines how information technology can be used to substantially improve business process performance. There are the five I s of business processes: Identify, Improve, IT-enable, Innovate and Implement.

! Context: Strategy as the driver 8125 Content map! Firm Strategy & Information Systems! Business Strategy, Organization design, IT Design triangle; Porter and the internet! Process Design, Enshrinement in silicon and deployment/use! The design of work (organizations) & Information Systems! Business Process perspectives! Process Innovation! Process and Organizational Agility / change management! Business System Analysis! IT Project Management! Small-scale - ISD! Enterprise-wide - ERP configuration! Sourcing of IS and other business functions (because of the IT systems)! Where, by whom and how it is done! Consequences: (Management Challenges and the dark side of IT)! Security & Risk Management! Ethical issues and practices in the deployment and strategic use of these systems

So how did we address this challenge? The Challenge Why = theory Basic Building Blocks How = practice Integrate Theory and Practice Important knowledge to stay current no matter how the technology changes As applied-- Necessary to relate the pieces of theory and to build handson competence and confidence

We addressed this challenge with The Challenge Why = theory Basic Building Blocks How = practice Integrate Theory and Practice Text readings, course notes, discussions and lectures; case briefs (thought pieces); compare contrast tables; discussion, copious feedback, shared learning opportunities Important knowledge to stay current no matter how the technology changes Necessary to relate the pieces of theory and to build handson competence and confidence Case briefs & discussions; podcasting projects; specialized articles; Work systems modeling; risk analysis, & explication of the student s own learning framework

I said that I would take a guided learning approach to pedagogy in which you, the student, will be primarily in charge of extracting meaning and value from the readings, in-class discussions and exercises as well as the out-of-class research and writing. the course will take an approach where learning comes from a combination of individual and group research, private analysis and public in-class discussions, experiential exercises, and, very importantly, from collaborative learning from each other. As a professor I can not resist the temptation to profess so yes there will be lectures. But I will try to limit those in length and scope.

And that I expected (hoped) you to take an open-minded and critical perspective. Instead of accepting the current practice or the fad de jour as best practice you are expected to examine to take a critical view of the materials we encounter, to bring your work and other life s experiences to the table and to look through and beyond the materials we share in class. to be surprised, thrilled, tickled and perhaps even enlightened in the learning journey together.

Prof Truex 1. Began each day with an intro/agenda) and ended the day with a wrap-up (the big picture) 2. Regularly re-visited material and examined the bigger picture. brought in experience, readings and issues from the outside and from contemporary events 3. Provided lectures from the text and other sources In advance and on-line and new people 4. Directed case and lecture discussion 5. Created the learning vehicle of the team seminar project 6. Was well-prepared for class; and was available to discuss the real time student concerns 7. Provided regular detailed feedback 8. Genuinely cared about your learning 9. Provided bizarre sense of humour and stories. The HumoUr
