1 COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Grant Writing in Physical Education Syllabus The College of Education is dedicated to the ideals of Collaboration, Academic Excellence, Research, and Ethics/Diversity. These are key tenets in the Conceptual Framework of the College of Education. Competence in these ideals will provide candidates in educator preparation programs with skills, knowledge, and dispositions to be successful in the schools of today and tomorrow. 1.0 Course Prefix and Number: PET Course Title: Grant Writing in Physical Education 3.0 Instructor s Name: Dr. Sara Flory Office: (813) Course Prerequisites: Admission to the PE Master s Level Program 5.0 Course Description: This course will provide the foundation to enable the physical educator to create a grant project, find appropriate funding sources, write a competitive grant proposal and manage a successful program grant to completion. Note: This course is delivered online. 6.0 Course Objectives: As a result of the course, students will demonstrate their ability to: 6.1 Recognize the truth about the myths surrounding grants 6.2 Create collaboration with other teachers, schools, universities, corporations and community agencies 6.3 Develop a Grant Title and a Grant Abstract 6.4 Conduct an in-depth search for funding sources 6.5 Match proposed grant project with funding sources guidelines 6.6 Recognize the general characteristics of a winning grant proposal 6.7 Write an Introduction to a competitive program grant proposal 6.8 Write a Needs Statement for a competitive program grant 6.9 Write a Design for a project, including Goals, Objectives, and Project Activities 6.10 Write a Quality of Personnel, Facilities, Equipment and Distribution section of a program project

Associated Assessment Measures: 1. Students will demonstrate the ability to create and find appropriate funding for a grant project by: a. Developing a project and writing an Abstract describing it. b. Conducting an on-line search for funding for the developed project. c. Matching the needs of the project with the funding guidelines of the granting agency. 2. Students will demonstrate the ability to incorporate and clearly communicate both general and specific information regarding fundable proposals in writing each of the following: a. An Introduction for a Program Grant b. A Needs Statement for a Program Grant c. A Project Design for a Program Grant d. A Quality of Personnel, Facilities, Equipment and Distribution Section for a Program Grant e. A Formative and a Summative Evaluation Plan for a Program Grant f. A Budget for a Program Grant g. Materials for an Appendix 3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to successfully organize and manage a grant.

Assignment Due By: 9/4/11 5:00 PM September 6 to September 9: 1. Read pp of textbook 2. Complete and submit the assignment to Develop a Title and Write a Grant Abstract (worth 4 points) 3. If 4 points are not awarded on the first submission, the assignment may be rewritten one time, after feedback from the instructor, in order to improve the score 4. Assignment Due By: 9/11/11 by 5:00 PM September 12 to September 16: 1. Read pp of textbook 2. Conduct an on-line Google search for appropriate funding sources for your program grant project. 3. Submit names of the two (2) best sources for your program grant project, (worth 2 points) 4. Assignment Due By: 9/18/11 5:00 PM September 19 to September 23: 1. Read pp of textbook 2. Place and submit the information from the guidelines of the two best sources of funding found in your Google search in the appropriate blanks on the Worksheet for Matching Funding Needs with Guidelines of Grant-Funding Sources which is provided. After completing the two worksheets, select and submit the name of the funding source that is best for your project and submit it along with the two completed worksheets. (worth 4 points) 3. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism is defined as "literary theft" and consists of the unattributed quotation of the exact words of a published text or the unattributed borrowing of original ideas by paraphrase from a published text. On written papers for which the student employs information gathered from books, articles, or oral sources, each direct quotation, as well as ideas and facts that are not generally known to the public-at-large, must be attributed to its author by means of the appropriate citation procedure. Citations may be made in footnotes or within the body of the text. Plagiarism also consists of passing off as one's own, segments or the total of another person's work. Punishment for academic dishonesty will depend on the seriousness of the offense and may include receipt of an "F" with a numerical value of zero on the item submitted, and the "F" shall be used to determine the final course grade. It is the option of the instructor to assign the student a grade of "F" of "FF" (the latter indicating dishonesty) in the course. 12. Detection of Plagiarism: It is very important to state in your syllabus that you plan to submit student assignments to SafeAssignment.com in order to detect plagiarism. This will give you the legal right to submit student assignments to SafeAssignment.com. If you pan to submit assignments to Safe Assignment, use the statement below: The University of South Florida has an account with an automated plagiarism detection service which allows instructors to submit student assignments to be checked for plagiarism. I reserve the right to 1) request that assignments be submitted to me as electronic files and 2) electronically submit to SafeAssignment.com, or 3) ask students to submit their assignments to SafeAssignment.com through myusf. Assignments are compared automatically with a database of journal articles, web articles, and previously submitted papers. The instructor receives a report showing exactly how a student's paper was plagiarized. 13. Web Portal Information: Every newly enrolled USF student receives an official USF account that ends with "mail.acomp.usf.edu." Every official USF correspondence to students will be sent to that account. Go to the Academic Computing website and select the link "Activating a Student E- mail Account" for detailed information.
