2 What has your society achieved? It is important to capture the great work that your society is doing and to communicate this to a wider audience. This data can be used to attract more members or to obtain investment from your institution and corporate sponsors. What has your society achieved? Any special Awards? A high member satisfaction? increased rates of employment? Created startups? Run a student-led business? 3 What types of Data are there? Qualitative quantitative qualitative data is data which can t be measured and often relates to softer skills e.g. increased self-esteem. these are observations of a change. Examples: case studies, interviews, feedback - audio/video, surveys quantitative data is data which can be measured statistically & will be a numerical measure e.g. 80% of participants leadership skills improved. Examples: % increase/decrease, 5* satisfaction, Graphs & Charts, 1-5 scale They are: visual, descriptive, observations, changes They are: facts, figures, quantities, numbers
4 theory of change download a theory of change example here A Theory of Change is used by non-profit organisations to map the steps towards achieving their long term goal. This is often an ongoing document and should take into account any assumptions made about stakeholders interests. Outputs What activities does your society provide? Examples Events held, Number of event attendees, Level of member satisfaction Outcomes Immediate changes that your society wants to happen? Examples Changes in skills, Increased employability Impact What long term effects will your society change? Examples Increased no. of startups, Reduced skills gaps
5 Giving something back When members join your society you should ask what do they hope to gain out of their membership? And monitor whether this is achieved. Think about what can your society realistically give back. This could be job opportunities with local business contacts or arranging an event for networking. It is important to know what members and potential members want from your society. Typical reasons for joining an enterprise society will be: Those with a business or wanting to start one Those wanting to network and gain useful contacts Those wanting to gain and develop their skills for the future
6 event feedback Skills measurement Members join societies to gain skills. Think about how your members want to grow & how you can measure their development Employability skills i.e. teamwork Enterprise Skills i.e. networking Soft skills i.e. confidence Members may join a society to attend events: What type of events do you host? what did you hope members would gain? What did attendees learn? Would they come again? What would they change? Growing your membership CREATE ENGAGING SURVEY FEEDBACK FORMS
7 Gaining investment Institutions Your host institution can be a great way to gain financial support for your society. It s important to communicate the positive impact your society is having on your members. Membership numbers - are these growing? Skills development - especially those which are extra-curricular Corporate sponsors Corporations will want to know how does working with your society benefit them and does what you re doing meet their company goals. 8 customer relationship manager (CRM) a CRM system is an online database used to manage relationships with current and potential contacts. a CRM may contain additional features such as marketing, activities and collaborations. Why not Excel? Free CRM systems Excel is a great cheap and easy tool to use if your society is small. However you may quickly lose track of contacts & may not be utilising these to their full potential. There are many trials and free (but limited) CRM systems which you can use with little or no training. Additional benefits may be: Monitoring calls & meetings Recording contact types and the nature of your relationship Adding historical notes such as any conservations had Recommended systems are: Sugar Salesforce Zoho Hubspot Insightly
