9 Call For Proposals CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS National Alliance of Black School Educators 43 rd AnnualConference Leading Change, Driving Innovation and Making a Difference for Students of African Descent The National Alliance of Black School Educators invites proposals for presentations and workshops for its 43rd Annual Conference at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC on November 18 22nd. Conference Strands: The following are workshop strands that will assist educators and administrators to embrace innovative teaching and management methods that will ensure a quality and equitable education for all students. Proposals should adhere to the guidelines set forth for submission. Proposals that fail to meet the selected strand and submission criteria will not be considered. Workshop presenters must choose one of the workshop strands. Please note that proposals will be judged on the relevance to one of the strands. The workshops should be hands on and interactive. 1. Next Generation Assessments: Now that numerous states throughout the nation have begun the assessment stage of Common Core State Standards, districts and schools have begun to plan for these performance-based assessments based upon their adoption of PARCC, Smarter Balanced, or other state-created assessments. This workshop strand invites proposals that target effective lessons examining how the design and implementation of these new assessment types can ensure academic and social achievement for all students, especially those of African descent. This strand also invites proposals that specifically introduce common formative assessments (CFA) in literacy and math that are specifically aligned and created to CCSS with student performance results. Such proposals should inform us on how CFAs were created, used, and how they improved classroom instruction and student performance. 2. Leading Change in the Equation from Digital Divide to Digital Access: As we advance in the world of technology, educators must enhance the human ability to shape and change the physical world to meet needs by manipulating materials and tools with techniques. Understanding the pervasive language that consistently moves us to the left of the continuum and states there is a digital divide, let us look at the right of the continuum and focus on ways to advance the opportunities that would become a Digital Provide. As we acknowledge the dynamics of the digital immigrants and the digital natives, this strand invites proposals that address and advance proven ideas, strategies and creative applications for advancement of modern information and communications technology for K-16 students. 3. Labels On Our Children: Turning Them Upside Down: As we work to make a difference in the way we educate students in the 21st century, and in particular, children of African Descent, one of the issues that continues to loom largely for us is that of the ongoing labeling of our students. Driven by academic purpose and funding language, educators use some common labels such as children who are homeless, special needs, gifted and talented, and, poor. In the midst of all of the labeling, we sometimes forget that our children are associated to these multiple labels and that we must teach and create opportunities above these funding programs and academic labeling. What would happen if we turned our labels upside down and inside out (i.e., homeless student as that miracle student)? What would happen if we began to approach the education of our labeled children, as if they were ALL gifted and talented? This strand invites proven practices/ideas, instructional strategies, real world examples, and/or programs that support real classroom/school site examples that have clearly engaged students by turning the labels on their students upside down or inside out in rigorous and relevant learning opportunities that yielded demonstrated results, evidence, or outcomes in student achievement, specifically African American students. continued on next page 2015 NABSE ConferencePacket 9
10 Call For Proposals 4. Leadership Navigating and Participation in Predominantly non-african American Educational Settings: The move toward an increasingly diverse workforce has become a common goal for many predominantly white school districts to recruit and hire African American administrators and teachers who recognize the need for children of color to have role models with the cultural understanding required to help them feel connected to schools in these districts. Upon securing these positions, educators may confront racism, gender bias, or sexism from their non-african American and African American constituents as well as encounter complex and intersecting racialized and gendered role expectations above and beyond those expected of other administrators. This strand addresses encountered issues within these districts with created strategies of empowerment for the identified issue. Proposals should clearly inform us on what the challenges are faced by African American leaders and teachers who work in predominantly white schools and how they address the identified issue (i.e., racism, sexism, gender) so that a complete appreciation and recognition of our voices and experiences are valued in these predominantly non-african American districts. 5. Driving Innovation in Teaching & Learning Through Green Classrooms & Districts: We must educate our way to a green economy and a better environment. We must develop policies and strategies to educate our students to support educational pathways toward a sustainable future. Our students can become the change agents. The educational pipeline must support environmentally rich courses and programs focused on a myriad of current topics (climate change, clean energy innovation, solar energy, waste minimization, food security, healthy food, etc). Students equipped with the academics, technical and career skills they need to lead the green revolution in the 21st century are of great importance. Preparing a new generation of environmentally literate citizens goes hand in hand with sparking students interest in high demand STEM careers. This strand invites proposals that share ideas, lesson plans, units, and strategies within the classroom and partnerships linking secondary, postsecondary, non-profit and private industry that provide ways of achieving environmental protection. BASIC GUIDELINES All proposals must be submitted via the Online Proposal Submission Form which can be found at and clicking on 2015 NABSE Conference. All proposals must be submitted electronically by Friday, July 17, Presentations must be limited to one (1) hour and 30 minutes, unless otherwise noted. Presenters must also be able to present their session at any time during the Annual Conference. The lead presenter must be a current NABSE Member. NABSE cannot pay honorariums, travel, lodging or any other additional costs associated with presenting at the Annual Conference. NABSE will provide one podium, microphone, screen, LCD projector and Internet access for each workshop. Presenters may be able to sell their publications and/or multi-media products during the Conference in the NABSE Exhibition Hall ONLY. The lead presenter will receive written notification on the status of their proposal electronically and by mail by July 31, We look forward to receiving your proposal! NABSE ConferencePacket
