F I R E IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF PREVENTABLE DEATHS IN THE HOME. Although families can prepare to handle the emergency of a devastating fire, it is reported by the State of Home Safety in America, that only OF FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN KNOW WHAT TO DO in case of a home fire. In order to help your family escape safely from your home in the event of a fire, it is crucial to prepare family members and your environment in case a fire should break out. By putting a solid escape plan in place and communicating the details of the plan to each family member, you can prevent tragedy from striking and be prepared to respond should fire invade your home.

PLAN DESIGN A PLAN EXPLAIN YOUR PLAN Draw a diagram or floor plan of each floor of Start by informing the whole family what to do your house, include windows and doors. in case of a fire. Place a smoke alarm outside each sleeping room. Teach children not to hide, but to quickly crawl Locate two possible routes out of each room in on the ground where the air is less smoky. your house. Teach children to use the back of their hand to Draw the plan large enough for children to read. test doors for heat before opening. For children who are unable to read, draw Explain that if a door is hot, they should recognizable items that identify each room. choose a different way out. Include local emergency numbers on on your Show all family members where the collapsible plan. escape ladder is located and practice how to Post emergency evacuation plan in your home use it from an upstairs level. where it can be seen and reviewed regularly. Always emphasize, "once out, stay out" when Take a picture of a designated meeting place and leaving a fire engulfed home. post in children's room or on the refrigerator. Decide on a meeting place when out of the home safely (a driveway, a neighbor's sidewalk, under a tree).

PREPAR E WINDOWS. Examine the distance from windows to the ground and remember that dangling feet first and dropping from upper floor windows should be your last option, but is better than staying inside a burning building. LADDERS. Purchase collapsible ladders to use for second-floor bedrooms. Make sure children know where they are located and how to climb down safely. NIX ELEVATORS. Never use an elevator when escaping a fire. Elevators often stop working and can trap people inside. Use stairwells or fire escape plan where elevators are present, especially in high rise buildings. ALTERNATE ROUTES. As a family, explore the building you live in so that every exit is familiar, including storage, laundry, and recreation rooms. If hallways in your home become smoke-filled, memory can help with finding alternate exits.

PRACTI CE At different times during the day, especially at night, when house fires are far more likely. Position each family member in his or her bed, turn all the lights off, and activate the smoke detector by depressing the test switch. Each family member should help "awaken" the others by yelling the alert. Family members should exit their rooms according to the plan, crawl low under smoke, practice feeling doors for heat, and meet in the designated location outside the home. Schedule your fire escape route practice for twice a year, trying different routes to get out of a room.

PREVEN T SMOKE DETECTORS. Check smoke detectors once a month and change the batteries at least once a year. At least one detector should be installed on every level of a home as they can detect smoldering and burning fires. SPACE HEATERS. Keep portable space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn. Never leave them on when you leave home or go to sleep. Smoking. Never smoke in bed or when you are sleepy. Carelessly discarded cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States. COOKING. Keep cooking handles on your pots turned inward so they do not hang over the front of the stove creating greater potential to be pulled off. Keep cooking areas clear of combustible items and wear tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. MATCHES AND LIGHTERS. Store matches in locked areas where kids can't reach them. In the hands of a child, matches and lighters can be deadly. EXTENSION CORDS. Do not overload an extension cord. Replace frayed or cracked cords and never run them under a rug.
