In order to help your family escape safely from your home in the event of a fire, it is crucial to prepare family members and your environment in case a fire should break out. By putting a solid escape plan in place and communicating the details of the plan to each family member, you can prevent tragedy from striking and be prepared to respond should fire invade your home.

Keep portable space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn. Never leave them on when you leave home or go to sleep. Smoking. Never smoke in bed or when you are sleepy. Carelessly discarded cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States. COOKING. Keep cooking handles on your pots turned inward so they do not hang over the front of the stove creating greater potential to be pulled off. Keep cooking areas clear of combustible items and wear tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. MATCHES AND LIGHTERS. Store matches in locked areas where kids can't reach them. In the hands of a child, matches and lighters can be deadly. EXTENSION CORDS. Do not overload an extension cord. Replace frayed or cracked cords and never run them under a rug.
