1 Christopher Oentojo DESMA 161a: Network Media 1 IA/UX Design Document 1) Manifesto Not being in the DESMA major, I am not quite acquainted with the DMA site. However, I remember when browsing the DMA classes site, sprouted from my desire to find a photography class on campus, I knew I wanted to take some DESMA classes because of the amazingly creative student work I witnessed. Thus I am proposing to change the DMA site to feature more student work. When a user comes to the main DMA page a slideshow, such as how the current site functions, and/or a grid of work will be displayed with appropriate headlines and descriptions. There are two main reasons for this change. The first reason is to connect prospective students, current students, and faculty with the work of fellow DMA students. Prospective students will want a glimpse of what it is like to be in the Design school and displaying, immediately, student work might make a more lasting connection. Current students will be able to discover work from students from different classes which might pique interest in different areas and/or instill inspiration. Lastly, faculty will be able to see other student s work from other classes which will hopefully bridge relationships between faculty and students. The second reason is mainly for current DMA students to feature their work and get their name out into the world. I understand that most students probably have a personal website featuring past projects, but if a large institution is featuring, on their front page, original student work, this only increases opportunity for students. However, all of the informational pages and links are still necessary and the current design is a great one because finding information is clear. 2) Audience The DMA site is intended for current UCLA DMA students, prospective students, faculty, and anyone interested in design. It is intended to be a portal to tons of original student work. 3) User Stories Chloe is a 17 year old senior in high school. Summer has just ended and it is fall of her senior year. Now is the time for her to decide where she wants to go for college. She is interested in going to a University that offers a great design program. She stumbles upon the UCLA DMA site and she instantly is greeted with an awesome visual display of original student work. She sees screenshots of student videos,

2 animations, and website creations. After clicking on a screenshot she imagined to be quite promising, she is taken to another page with the embedded video, a description of the video, the name and photo of the student responsible for the work, and a link to the student s profile page. After watching the amazingly creative and inspiring video, Chloe wants to find out more about this student, so she clicks on the link to see the student s profile page. Here she is able to read a bio about the student and view his or her other projects. Chloe goes back to the main home page and discovers a plethora of other student work that she herself wants to be able to do. She has made her decision. Mark is a 40 year old faculty member at the UCLA DMA School. He has recently decided that he wants to teach his design knowledge to undergraduate students and disperse his personal experiences. Before joining the UCLA DMA faculty, Mark was responsible for being part of the insanely creative Apple design team. After being part of that team for a couple of years, he has decided to go back to school as a teacher and really make an impact on his students. Mark visits the DMA website to get more acquainted with the program before he starts teaching class the coming week. He is immediately displayed original student work. Wanting to see what kind of talent the students have, he clicks on one of the screenshots and is taken to the project page with a video of the animation as well as some information about the students and a link to the student s profile page. After watching the hilarious and creative animation, he was quite impressed with the student s skill. Wanting to let others know about this student s awesome work, he is able to click the share link on the project page where he can share the animation through various social media outlets (Twitter, FaceBook, Digg). Choosing to share the animation through his Twitter account, Mark s plus followers see the link, click it, watch the video, share it, and the video spreads through the internet like wildfire. The student has gained instant internet fame and is contacted by several design firms.
