1 Students of the Month Joey Sherwood - Hollister GIBSON TECHNICAL CENTER SPRING 2015 From the Desk of the Director, Nick Thieman Students and staff have had a very busy Spring semester. Many of our second year students have started their internships and job shadowing. The EMT and Health Occupations students are completing their required clinicals and practical experiences with local health care agencies. You will also see in this newsletter that several of our students have completed the competitions for DECA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA and have done very well! All of our sending schools have visited GTC with prospective students and are in the process of scheduling their classes for next year. Program Spotlight Early Childhood Careers!! Damien Beck - Reeds Spring Ramsey Burk - Galena Colton Turner - Forsyth Gibson Technical Center is proud to announce that we have a new program in place for the school year. Early Childhood Careers is a program that is designed for students who have the desire to work in careers involving young children. This could be everything from an elementary teacher, certified daycare provider, to a preschool teacher. The course content includes child development, child health and safety, nutrition, childcare regulations, special needs children and working with families. This is a two-year course in which students will participate in classroom instruction and also have practical experiences at local childcare providers. The Early Childhood Careers classroom will be located at the Reeds Spring Primary school. This will allow students easy access to practicums because the RS Early Childhood classrooms will be right across the hall. Second year students will work towards their CDA (Child Development Associate) certification while participating in their practical experiences at various certified childcare providers. 2 Chris Stober- Collision Repair This month s spotlight features our Collision Repair instructor, Chris Stober. Chris is in his second year at Gibson Tech. He has over twenty years of industry experience at Hammers Autoworks, Bodycrafters, and Tin Bender. In only two years, Mr. Stober has renovated the paint booth to include a more modern water-born paint. And has also acquired a SimSpray virtual paint simulator. Students wear a visor fitting down over their eyes and wield a realistic spray gun attached to a computer. The computer program scores the student s performance on several criteria and allows the students to practice without the cost for materials. The collision repair class has completed several small repairs and some larger repairs. The pictures below have highlighted some of their projects that students have completed this year. Mr. Stober s efforts to improve the Collision Repair program and dedication to student learning has made him a valuable asset to the staff at Gibson Tech. Follow us on for updates and general news! Students in the Collision Repair restored this truck to mint condition. Students fixed every-thing from dents and rust repair to a complete paint job. 3 DECA Team Qualifies for Nationals Culinary Arts students finish 1 st & 3 rd in state competitions! Reeds Spring DECA students qualified for the second year in a row to compete at the national level! Delaney Pozek, Morgan Cantrell and Madison Porter will compete in the Student-Based Enterprise Competition in Orlando Florida on April 24 th. In addition to the competition, students will attend the International Career Development Conference and attend leadership seminars and breakout sessions that cover all aspects of business and marketing professions. Two Culinary Arts students qualified for state SkillsUSA competitions in Jefferson City in the written exam portion of the contest. Jesse Rehm from Branson claimed the first place prize and Trent Defenbaugh from Hollister finished third in the written competition. Congratulations to both students for doing a great job at State! EMT Class Sweeps Competition! The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program attended the Missouri State HOSA Leadership Conference in Rolla. Students competed against almost 900 students from around the state. Gibson Tech finished First, Second, and Third in the EMT team competitions! This is the second year in a row that our program has finished first! Dennis Melvin (Reeds Spring) and Anthony Griggs (Reeds Spring) took 1 st place. Justin Simpson (Galena) and McKinna Reed (Reeds Spring) finished in 2 nd place. Kialey Shirkey (Galena) and Vanessa Gilbert (Spokane) finished third. All three team qualified for the national competition this summer in Anaheim California. Congratulations to all of the students who participated and good luck at the national competition.
