1 Product Brief Enterprise Router features and benefits High-performance networking Flexible network connectivity Simplifies maintenance and serviceability Maximizes investment protection The Enterprise Router from Nortel Networks is designed for high-end, performance-intensive Power Branch and network data center environments. The Power Branch is a remote office that has through the adoption of high-bandwidth applications or end-user growth outgrown the connectivity and performance capabilities of the traditional branch office router. The solution reduces WAN operating costs by incorporating highperformance multiprotocol routing features across a choice of WAN services. The is designed with the following key features: High-performance routing Multiprotocol support Higher speed WAN services of T1 to T3 ATM T1/E1 and T3/E3 WAN access High performance compression and encryption The Enterprise Router supports all major network and bridging protocols, wide area services, and IBM standards. It satisfies connectivity and performance requirements for remote branch and data center environments, allowing you to manage traffic to match your business needs.

2 Next-generation architecture The combines several technologies in a unique, multiservice WAN solution for Power Branch offices. These technologies, found individually in other products, leverage industry-wide acceptance and highvolume production to quickly deliver features to market at the best price for the application. At the core of the architecture is the telecom-qualified Compact PCI (cpci) backplane, which provides a standard interface for interconnecting slots using packet, cell, or Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technologies. Standard mechanical components assure a rugged and reliable product. The use of industry-qualified PCI, H.110, and Utopia bus interfaces drives down the price for this implementation. The PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) further reduces the price of physical interface options, while delivering the configuration flexibility appropriate to a branch office application. With its high level of integration and high internal bandwidth, the Motorola Power QUICCll processor achieves optimal performance across several high-speed interfaces. The brings these price-performance benefits to the market in a flexible package. Its mix of technologies will evolve to meet the expanding network requirements of the branch office. Benefits High-performance networking The high-performance architecture of the supports concurrent execution of compute-intensive applications. These include WAN bandwidth optimization (QoS, multiplexing, and compression), SNA network integration (through DLSw Data Link Switching), Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN, SDLC), and remote office link security, through encryption and Virtual Private Networks (VPN). The supports both wire-speed LAN-to-LAN routing via Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, and high-speed WAN routing via T1/E1 and T3/E3. Flexible network connectivity The provides both Ethernet LAN and a variety of WAN transports, speed offerings, and multilink scenarios to leverage new service offerings. WAN options include ATM, Frame Relay, X.25, Circuit Emulation Services (CES), and ISDN, providing customers a choice of competitive WAN tariff options. Support for data compression also maximizes utilization of given circuit speeds. Simplifies maintenance and serviceability The with ARN WAN and PMC I/O modules provides simple, pluggable installation and serviceability. All active components can be installed, repaired, and upgraded without opening the chassis, thus reducing Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) and skills required on-site. In addition, the chassis supports two power supplies for power redundancy. The supplies can load share, and are hot swappable with separate line cords and switches for alternate power sources. Maximizes investment protection The modular, future-proof architecture of the meets the changing requirements of the remote office network. Support for industry-standard components enables flexible configuration options while enabling migration to new network applications. The use of ARN WAN modules protects the investment in the network. Highperformance processing provides the headroom to grow traffic at a site for the foreseeable future. Modular additions preserve initial investment and enhance the capacity and flexibility of the installed unit.

Up to three ARN WAN adapter modules can be inserted into the. A fourth WAN slot is available and dedicated to a V.34 modem for remote console management (See Figure 1). The Passport 5430 supports the ARN WAN adapter modules shown in Table 1. PCI Mezzanine Cards The PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) is an emerging, standard interface format IEEE P which provides simple, pluggable installation and configuration. See Table 2 for a list of PMC expansion cards. The PMC modules attach to a cpci expansion card, providing connectivity to any WAN or LAN resource. PCI technology enhances platform flexibility and serviceability while reducing component costs. Expansion card options Expansion cards slide into the Passport 5430 chassis, providing interface connectivity to both the H.110 bus and the cpci backplane. The expansion cards leverage decades of market development, delivering industrialgrade service and reduced costs with common, high-volume components. Each expansion card supports two plug-in slots for PMC I/O interfaces. Up to three expansion cards are supported per chassis. Integrated ATM networking The supports ATM WAN services from T1/E1 to T3/E3 rates. Standards-based signaling (through UNI 3.0, 3.1, and 4.0) and encapsulation (through RFC 1577, 1483, 1490, and null encapsulation) ensure interoperability between multivendor equipment. High-performance Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR) enable Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) and Constant Bit Rate (CBR) WAN services. Circuit Emulation Services (CES) is supported for high-performance, cost-effective ATM networking. Forwarding performance extends well beyond the current ARN and Access Stack Node (ASN*) platforms to support more bandwidth and processor-intensive branch office environments. Integrated ATM hardware for SAR provides scalable, highperformance ATM services without degrading the forwarding performance of the processor. The additional processing power is available to fill high-speed WAN circuits or to provide services such as compression, encryption, or traffic management. Bay Routing Services (BayRS) BayRS router software for the maximizes efficiency for high-performance, remote office connectivity in multi-vendor, multiprotocol environments, and supports all major network and bridging protocols. Three software suites are available for the, including IP Access, Remote Office, and Corporate. This allows the to be configured with the software that best fits the remote site s requirements. Switched services In addition to primary WAN connectivity for the small office/home office (SOHO) and remote office/branch office (ROBO) markets, the Passport 5430 supports dial services to provide ISDN and analog Dial Backup, Bandwidth on Demand through multi-link PPP, and Dial on Demand to ensure network availability and to eliminate bandwidth constraints. Switched services provide bandwidth when needed, while minimizing usage charges. VPN End Node Internet-based VPNs may offer significant cost savings to some users compared to traditional private networks (i.e., Frame Relay, leased line). The incorporates high-end VPN technologies IPSec and Internet Key Exchange (IKE) for secured tunneling across the Internet. VPN tunneling is supported across the entire Nortel Networks enterprise router family and Contivity VPN Switches. Traffic management BayRS data compression, traffic prioritization, uniform traffic filters, and QoS classification and queuing provide comprehensive traffic management capabilities to the. Differentiated Services for QoS In addition to Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) for Integrated Services (IntServ) support, BayRS supports Differentiated Services (DiffServ) for scalable, end-to-end, standards-based IP QoS. The will classify and queue packets based upon predefined Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) bits, or will classify and condition packets by setting the DSCP bits based on policy filter information.

5 Policy-based filters may be statically defined or set dynamically from the central Optivity* Policy Server via the Common Open Policy Server (COPS) protocol. DiffServ identifies three classes of service: Expedited Forwarding, Assured Forwarding, or Default. Several dequeuing mechanisms are supported including Strict Dequeuing, Bandwidth Allocation, Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ), Random Early Detection (RED), and Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED). SNMP-based node management The Nortel Networks Optivity network management applications deliver a complete, SNMP-based enterprise management solution that provides operation, policy, and design services for end-to-end management of routers, hubs, and switches. This approach enables proactive network planning and accelerates problem solving, resulting in reduced costs associated with owning and operating corporate networks of any size. Router system management System management directly supports the Bay Command Console (BCC) command line interface and the Technician's Interface for static and dynamic router configuration for monitoring and management services. The BCC provides an integrated collection of tools for configuring, monitoring, and debugging network devices. Providing a simplified, English word-style command set, the BCC addresses customer requirements to provide a complete, easy to use, and efficient management interface that enables device configuration and maintenance. Enabling basic configuration and maintenance, the Technician's Interface is based on a simple command line interpreter that supports SNMP-based MIB access, displays event logs, and supports file system management and other administrative commands.
