1 St Barnabas Theological Centre Missional Training for the 21st Century Programme

3 St Barnabas Theological Centre provides missional training for the 21st Century in Yorkshire and beyond. Ordination Training for Anglican and Baptist ordinands, over 2-3 years, including BA and MA tracks. Independent Leadership Track for leaders in various ministries, over 1-6 years, full-day and half-day, including BA and MA tracks. Theology Modules from Saturday short modules to a full degree in Theology.

4 Ordination Training SBTC trains Anglican ordinands in partnership with the Yorkshire Ministry Course and Baptist ministers in partnership with Northern Baptist College. Our training programme is missional, practical and church-based. It brings together leading practitioners in mission with a strong academic team. 6 Independent Leadership Track The Independent Leadership Track includes a Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission and access to the SBTC leadership development programme. It involves either full-day or half-day training on Mondays during term time throughout the academic year. Signing up for the Independent Leadership Track has been a lifechanging decision for me. The lecturers are top quality and very supportive, and the assignments have shown me that I am capable of more than I realised. Tracey, Independent Leader

7 Fees per year 2700 fully accredited ( 1800 half day) 1620 internally assessed ( 1260 half day) 1380 teaching only ( 1140 half day) The Independent Leadership Track includes: Our full Monday academic programme, leading to a Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission with Durham University (Common Awards). Modules include: Preparing to Learn Brief Introduction to Church History Introduction to The Old Testament Introduction to The New Testament Introduction to Christian Doctrine Mission and Evangelism Introduction to Preaching or Elementary NT Greek The SBTC leadership programme, including missional leadership input and formation huddles. Monday sessions, during term times, 14th Sept th July 2016 (8:30am-4:45pm). Study over one year, with an option to continue to a Diploma, Degree or Masters qualification. Continue at your pace over 1-6 years. Entry at higher levels is possible for some students, depending on prior study. Half-day option leads to a Certificate in Theology, Ministry and Mission over two years. Fees include breakfast and lunch on Mondays, library access and all module fees. Students on the Independent Leadership Track need to be involved in, or preparing for, a recognised leadership role and have the support of their local church. 8 Monday Theology Modules SBTC provides access to theology modules on Mondays at St Thomas Crookes Campus. Fees per module 300 fully accredited ( 150 short modules) 120 internally assessed ( 60 short modules) 80 teaching only ( 40 short modules) Each module includes: Over 20 hours of interactive teaching (over 10 hours for short modules). Fully accredited modules build towards a Certificate, Diploma or BA in Theology, Ministry and Mission with Durham University (Common Awards). 9 Monday Modules Morning sessions begin at 9.30am, following breakfast and morning worship. Afternoon sessions begin at 2.00pm with prayer and finish at 4.45pm. Level 4 These modules constitute the first year of undergraduate study. Many of them can be taken as a taster for further study. Preparing to Learn (short module) An introduction to Degree level theological education. Starts September Mission and Evangelism Teaching, discussion and practical reflection on mission, including input from expert practitioners. Starts September Introduction to Church History (short module) An overview of church history, its key movements and their significance. Starts Oct Introduction to Preaching (short module) Examining why and how to preach well, including appropriate handling of Biblical texts. Starts November Elementary New Testament Greek (short module) Working from the very basics of New Testament Greek (see further details). Starts November Introduction to the New Testament Introducing the writings, historical context and theology of the New Testament. Starts November Introduction to Christian Doctrine Introducing key Christian doctrines, their formation and significance. Starts March Introduction to the Old Testament Introducing the writings, genre and application of the Old Testament. Starts May 2016.

10 Level 5 & 6 Level five and six modules constitute the second and third years of undergraduate study. Access to these modules depends on students prior study. Bible in Context How to read, interpret and apply the Scriptures today. Starts September Mission Entrepreneurship: Principles (short module) Developing effectiveness in launching social and missional initiatives. Starts September Worship, Church and Sacraments The theology and practice of corporate worship, with extended reflection on the meaning of Baptist and Eucharist. Starts November Topic in Doctrine: Soteriology (short module) An extended study of salvation, its meanings and contexts. Starts January Biblical Studies In depth study of selected Biblical texts and their interpretation. Starts March Pastoral Care Healthy ministerial life, care of self and others and the formation of the human person in Christ. Starts March Issues in Biblical Theology Advanced reflection on Biblical interpretation for contemporary theology and discipleship. Starts September Denominational History and Practices: Anglicanism The history, development, theology and future of Anglicanism (a module on Baptist denominational identity will begin ). Starts November Mission and Apologetics in Contemporary Culture In depth reflection on the gospel, our culture and the articulation of a reasonable basis for Christian faith. 11 New Testament Greek These sessions work from the very basics of Greek to develop confidence in reading and understanding the New Testament. No previous study of Greek is assumed. Fees 150 fully accredited 60 internally assessed 40 teaching only Free taster sessions The five Autumn taster sessions are free and open to all. Come along to learn the Greek alphabet and sample New Testament Greek, with no commitment to study further. The teaching in the Spring term will build upon the work completed in the free taster sessions. Study will be supported by textbook and online resources to allow students to progress at their own pace. 12 Our Team SBTC draws together a strong academic team from across the region. Associate Director - Dr Daniel McGinnis Daniel McGinnis is Head of Faculty and responsible for the day to day running of SBTC. He has an MA and PhD in Biblical Studies from Sheffield University, and his primary research interests are the book of Acts and urban missiology. Daniel has been involved in church planting and leadership for the last 15 years. Principal of YMC - Mark Powley Mark Powley is Principal of the Yorkshire Ministry Course, which works in partnership with SBTC to train Anglican ordinands. He studied Theology at Nottingham University and Oxford University, and is currently pursuing a DThMin at Kings College London. Director of Studies - Dr Ken Farrimond Ken Farrimond studied Hertford College, Oxford, Trinity College, Bristol and completed his doctorate at the University of Leeds. He is a member of the Yale- Edinburgh group on the History of the Missionary Movement and Non-Western Christianity. He is currently Blended Learning Officer for the Ministry Division of the Church of England.

13 Tutor in Pastoral Care - Dr Sally Nelson Sally Nelson is training officer for the Yorkshire Baptist Association. She has served as a hospice chaplain and a locum hospital chaplain. Her doctoral work was in pastoral anthropology. She is also editor for Encounter with God (Scripture Union). Tutor in Anglicanism - Dr Stephen Spencer Stephen Spencer is Vice Principal of Yorkshire Ministry Course. He has extensive experience as a theological educator and parish priest and is the author of the SCM Studyguides for Anglicanism, Christian Mission and Church History. Tutor in Ethics - Andrew Grinnell Andrew lives in a Salvation Army community in East Leeds seeking to be good neighbours by practicing hospitality and developing opportunities to strengthen the local area. He holds a degree in Music, an MA in Christian Spirituality and is currently working on a DMin exploring the relationship between poverty and hope. Tutor in Missional Leadership - Dr Alan Ward Alan is the Baptist minister at St Thomas Church, Sheffield where he leads Family Church with his wife Helen. He studied Mechanical Engineering in Sheffield, followed by a PhD in Tribology. He is currently completing a masters in Contextual Theology with NBC, Manchester. He has been involved in missional leadership training for many years.

14 Tutor in Biblical Theology - Jon Swales Jon Swales is Mission Priest of Lighthouse, a community for the marginalized in central Leeds. He has studied Theology at the University of Leeds, and Biblical Studies at both Sheffield University and Trinity College, Bristol (MLitt, ADMT). Tutor in Worship - Helen Bent Helen Bent is a parish priest and author of Worship 4 Today, a national resource for planning gathered worship. She studied Music at Sheffield University and Theology at Trinity College, Bristol. She is also part of the national team for Leading Your Church into Growth. Tutors in Missional Leadership - Bob & Mary Hopkins Bob and Mary Hopkins lead Anglican Church Planting Initiatives (ACPI). They have wide experience of coaching missional leaders and have authored a number of books including Clusters, Evangelism Strategies and Coaching for Missional Leadership. Tutor in Mission - Paul Oakley Paul Oakley is vicar of All Saints Totley in Sheffield. Prior to this, he was a member of the Church Army Training Team. He has a BSc, a PGCE, and an MA in Theology from St John s, Nottingham. He spent 6 years in Nigeria, training ministers for a rapidly-growing Church and has a passion for the world-wide Church.

15 Guest Lecturer - Dr Ian Paul Ian is Honorary Assistant Professor at Nottingham University, Assistant Minister at St Nic s Nottingham and Director of Publishing for Grove Books. His PhD was in New Testament interpretation, and he chairs the Revelation Seminar at the annual British New Testament Conference. Guest Lecturer - Greg Downes Greg is Theologian & Missioner of St Michael le Belfrey. He has experience in theological training as well as serving in sector ministry as both a prison and university chaplain. Guest Lecturer - James Barnett James is the leader of Riverside Church, Leeds. He has degrees in Theology from Leeds and Bristol University and has experience in leadership training, church planting and contemporary spirituality. Guest Lecturer - Dr Melody Briggs Melody Briggs is Developing Discipleship Officer for Durham Diocese and Visiting Fellow in Bible and Christian Ministry at St John s College, Durham. She is the co-author of Living for God: Studies for Disciples in the 21st Century. She has extensive experience in children s work, youth work and adult theological education.

16 Guest Lecturer - Dr Andy Weir Andy Wier is a researcher, consultant and practical theologian with a background in community development and urban mission. He holds degrees in Social and Political Studies, Urban Regeneration and Practical Theology (DProf Chester). Andy lives in Sheffield with his wife and son and serves on the leadership team of an inner city parish church. Guest Lecturer - Dr Christine Gore Christine Gore is Director of Formation for Ministry for the Diocese of Sheffield. She studied a PhD in the Department of Genetics at Glasgow University and completed a Masters in Biblical Interpretation at London Bible College. Guest Lecturer - Dr Chris Ellis Chris Ellis has been Principal of Bristol Baptist Collge and President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. His doctroral research is in Liturgical Theology. He is the author of Approaching God: A Guide for Worship Leaders and Worshippers, and co-editor of Patterns and Prayers for Christian Worship. Guest Lecturer - Dr Graham Cray Graham Cray has been Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge and Bishop of Maidstone. He is the Chairman of Soul Survivor. He is the author of Disciples and Citizens and chair of the Mission- Shaped Church report.

17 Guest Lecturer - Dr Keith Jones Keith Jones is an associate lecturer with Northern Baptist College. He has written widely on Baptist history and identity and was Rector of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague. He studied Peace Studies at Bradford University, and holds DPhil from the University of Wales. Guest Lecturer - Dr Steven Croft Steven Croft is the Bishop of Sheffield. He has been Warden of Cranmer Hall and Leader of the national Fresh Expressions team. He is a co-author of Emmaus: the Way of Faith, a set of resources for Christian nurture widely used in the UK and across the world. He is author and co-author of a number of books including Ministry in Three Dimensions and Travelling Well.

18 Our Venue SBTC is hosted at the St Thomas Crookes campus in Sheffield. The campus allows space for lectures, discussion groups, worship and prayer. It also houses a growing academic library which is available to all of our students. The campus has good transport links into the city and from there across the region.

19 FAQ?Who can attend SBTC courses? SBTC Saturday modules are open to all. In order to begin a Monday module you will normally need to have some prior experience of college or university education, or to have developed equivalent skills through personal reading. Admission to the Independent Leadership Track is via application. For all admission queries, please contact enquiries@stbarnabastraining.org What can I expect on an SBTC course? Teaching will be delivered in an accessible style including lecture, Q & A and group discussion formats. Sessions include breaks for coffee and discussion. Students come from a range of academic backgrounds and life experiences, and everyone has something worthwhile to contribute. When and how can I sign up? You can register now. 20 Are the courses validated by a university? SBTC modules are accredited by Durham University via the Common Awards scheme. How are fees paid?
