2 BLACKBOARD LEARN In-person workshops take place in the Faculty/Staff Computer Lab unless otherwise indicated. For those who can t make it to campus for in-person Blackboard Learn (BL) workshops, online sessions are available. Online workshops are conducted entirely online in Blackboard Learn and are open for one week unless otherwise indicated. Specific log-in instructions will arrive by Triton College shortly before each workshop s start date. After the start time, participants can log into their chosen workshop from any computer. Faculty need not log in at the time the workshop opens. For new users of Blackboard and for those full- and part-time instructors looking to enhance a course or explore the Blackboard Learn environment. Topics include an introduction to Blackboard Learn, adding and organizing content, communication tools, uploading a complete syllabus, and the Grade Book. This session is required before one can request an enhanced course shell in Blackboard Learn, including adjunct faculty looking to fulfill their course shell requirements. Pre-registration is required. Sign up either for the entire seminar or select individual topics for professional development. Complete descriptions for each topic appear below. Specific log-in instructions will arrive by Triton College shortly before each workshop s start date. After the start date, participants can log into their chosen workshop from any computer. Pre-registration is required. BL: Teaching Online Seminar (3 weeks) This seminar is conducted over a three-week period entirely online in Blackboard Learn. This online seminar is an overview of online learning and teaching. Through readings, discussions, and activities, the participants will learn about technology trends in education, characteristics of the successful online facilitator, best practices for the virtual classroom, characteristics of the successful online student, and their role in the virtual classroom. This seminar is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. Online: Saturday, May 16 Sunday, June 7 BLS Topic 1: Getting Started This session is an introduction to the Blackboard Learn environment. Topics include navigating in Blackboard Learn, adding and organizing content, communication tools, netiquette, and uploading a complete syllabus. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Tuesday, June 9 Monday, June 15 BLS Topic 2: Presenting Content In this session, we will discuss key elements of good course design, planning the course, creating web-friendly content, building and using learning modules and folders, rubrics and using adaptive release. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Tuesday, June 23 Monday, June 29 BLS Topic 3: Discussions, Blogs, Journals and Wikis In this session, we will cover creating effective online discussions and the various tools Blackboard Learn offers to manage them. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Tuesday, June 30 Tuesday, July 7 BLS Topic 4: Assessments In this session, we will cover the pedagogical and practical methods of designing assessments, as well as Blackboard Learn s tools to create, manage, and analyze assessments and internal surveys. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Tuesday, July 7 Sunday, July 12 BLS Topic 5: Assignments and Plagiarism In this session, we will cover Blackboard Learn s assignment tool and antiplagiarism software (Safe Assign), as well as low- and high-tech tools to recognize and document plagiarism. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, July 13 Sunday, July 19 BLS Topic 6: Grading Center and Reports In this session, we will cover Blackboard Learn's internal Grade Center, working with grades, and how to apply effective rubrics that make grading faster, easier and more consistent. In addition, we will discuss how course reports, the early warning system, and the performance dashboard and the retention center can be used to monitor student progress. This session is required to qualify to teach online or hybrid courses for the college. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, July 20 Sunday, July 26 BLS Topic 7: Working with Groups While group work is never easy, it should not be avoided in the online environment. In this session, we will cover Blackboard Learn s group manager. Although this session is not required to qualify to teach online for the college, it is still recommended. Pre-registration is required. (360 minutes) Online: Monday, July 27 Monday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m. In order to teach online or hybrid courses for the college, faculty must complete both the Blackboard Learn Topic Seminar and the Teaching Online Seminar. INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND WEB 2.0 TOOLS In-person workshops take place in the Faculty/Staff Computer Lab unless otherwise indicated. BL: Blackboard Collaborate I and II Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool that can be used to enhance classroom instruction with live guest speakers, in online classes to hold a synchronous session with students, to conduct virtual meetings, to provide online student services and advising, etc. In Blackboard Collaborate I, you will learn how to request a Collaborate room, set up a conference, and share your computer's desktop with an audience. To facilitate hands-on activities, we will be

3 "flipping" the workshop, so you will receive links to preparatory videos prior to the workshop via Triton . Then, in Collaborate II you will facilitate your own small Collaborate session with assistance. Collaborate II is offered by appointment only for those who have attended Collaborate I. Appointments must be scheduled via to (60 minutes each) Wednesday, June 17, 1-2 p.m. Thursday, July 16, a.m. Introduction to 3D Printing: Part 1 3D printing is in forefront of recent news. This workshop provides an overview of the 3D printing process, and an introduction to the software and hardware required to create 3D objects for yourself and your students. (120 minutes) Monday, June 29, 1-3 p.m. Introduction to 3D Printing: Part 2 Now that your interest is piqued, come and get a closer look at the design tools and hardware for 3D printing. At the end of this workshop you will have a file that you can schedule to have printed in the CTE. Be sure to bring a flash drive! Prerequisite: Introduction to 3D Printing Part 1 or comparable experience. (120 minutes) Wednesday, July 8, 1-3 p.m. OER: A Crash Course Looking for multimedia to incorporate into your classroom? Worried about copyright laws? Learn how to search for and use open educational resources (OER) to enhance your online and face-toface courses without worrying about copyrights. During this session, we will discuss a brief overview of OER, see some examples and share resources for you to explore. (60 minutes) Wednesday, June 24, Noon 1 p.m. Web 2.0: Choose Your Own Adventure Aloha! Come join us online in the digital breezes on 4 tropical islands to choose your own Web 2.0 Adventure. A completely online 4-week experience awaits. During the first week you will enjoy a brief islandhopping excursion, after which you will choose two of the islands for a week-long exploration. During the fourth week, share your adventures and accomplishments in an online discussion forum. (120 minutes) Online: Monday, June 1 Tuesday, June 30 Online: Wednesday, July 1 Friday, July 31 SMART BOARD workshops meet in E-210W unless otherwise indicated. Brief (1 hour) introduction to the, in which simple functionality is covered. This workshop is pre-requisite to any other workshop. In addition, learn how Smart s Maestro product provides seamless integration between a single ipad and Smart Notebook lessons from anywhere in the room. Note: you must bring your own Apple device to participate in this workshop. Prerequisite:. (90 minutes) Wednesday, May 27, 1:30 3 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 1:30-3 p.m. New Tools for GED/ESL Ready to expand upon your use of the in the classroom? Smart Notebook 14 offers new tool options that can be used with GED and ESL students to create dynamic, interactive lessons, including Basic Math Tools, Smart Math Blocks, 3D Tools, the Gallery, and the Smart Exchange. Prerequisite: (90 minutes) Wednesday, June 24, 4 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 4 5:30 p.m. Brightlink Interactive Projector and Smart KAPP This two-in-one workshop will focus on the new equipment being installed in the H- building: the Brightlink Interactive Projector and Smart KAPP. The Brightlink Interactive Projector is a little different from the traditional s already installed across the campus. In this workshop learn best practices to successfully use this new projector. Described as a digital flip chart to rescue brainstorms from the place they go to die, Smart Kapp digitally captures participants ideas and notes and disseminates them to concurrent live viewers in the same room or across the campus. Note: you must bring your own ipad, tablet, laptop, or android device to participate in this workshop. Prerequisite:. (90 minutes) Wednesday, June 10, 2 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Math Smart Notebook 14/15 has improved math functionality through the new Smart Math Tools powered by Geogebra! Write equations, create interactive graphs, and use new Smart Notebook features that are available for all levels of math and math-related instruction. In addition, there will be an overview of the TI Simulator which has been installed on s across the campus. Included in the 90-minute presentation is a 30-minute, hands-on, assisted lab. Prerequisite:. (90 minutes) Monday, June 15, 2 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2 3:30 p.m. Smart Response VE Learn how to create interactive sessions by using student-owned smart devices (smart phones, tablets, etc.) and/or Smart Clickers and Student Response System. Assessment Basics Assessment gauges how well we help students gain the skills and information necessary for them to succeed both in and beyond their classrooms and informs ways to improve our course content and teaching methods. In this teaching circle, we'll cover the forms functions of assessment, and participants will leave with practical examples for immediate use n the classroom. (60 minutes) Wednesday, June 3, 11 a.m. Noon Thursday, July 9, 11 a.m. Noon Monday, Aug. 3, 9 10 a.m. Successful Student Engagement Techniques (SETs) Discover proven Student Engagement Techniques (SETs) grounded in active and collaborative learning techniques that address multiple learning styles. Participants will leave this workshop with ready-to-use classroom activities and assignments for immediate or future use in their classrooms. (120 minutes) Monday, June 22, 9 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 1 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. Noon Assessment Day 2015 Rubrics Rubrics improve students ability to master course content in a logical, consistent manner and improve the speed and efficiency of grading. In this teaching circle, participants will learn and share ways to develop effective rubrics for use both in and out of the classroom. (60 minutes) Wednesday, June 3, 1 2 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 1 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 10:30 11:30 a.m. Tips for New or Returning Instructors For those who are teaching for the first time or those returning to the classroom who want to be as comfortable with their teaching skills as they are with their course content. Topics include establishing and maintaining an interactive learning environment, teaching tips and student engagement strategies.
