In order to bring your book to the widest possible audience, we need detailed information about you and your work. Although some of the information may already be known to us, your assistance in completing all questions as fully as possible will ensure that no detail is overlooked. The replies you give will be used as the basis of descriptions for the book cover and for publicity aimed at potential buyers, booksellers, sales staff and overseas agents. If you need more space please use additional sheets. We begin promoting books six months in advance of publication date. We encourage you to complete and return the Author s Promotion form no later than 30 days after submitting the manuscript. If we do not receive the completed form on time it could seriously delay the promotion of your book. This document is available on disk in Microsoft Word format. If you choose to answer the questionnaire using a computer, please follow the order of the questionnaire and include both the prompt and answer. It would also be helpful if you could underline or otherwise highlight the prompts. The Editorial and Marketing Directors are well aware that completing this form in full will take you some time, and we would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation. Important: If you use an International Courier service (such as DHL, FedEx, UPS) to send in script or proofs, the Press will inform you which office address to use. PLEASE TYPE YOUR ANSWERS OR PRINT THEM CLEARLY BIOGRAPHICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION 1 Book title (and subtitle if any) 2 Full name and date of birth Certain cumulative catalogues print authors names in full along with their date of birth, and ask us to supply this information. But it is not necessary to give your date of birth if you wish not to

Smith, etc.). 4 Your present affiliation Please include title: Professor of, Lecturer in etc., department and university/institution, etc. 5 Citizenship Customs regulations in some countries demand this information. 6 Place of birth 7 Short biographical details As for Who s Who, please include academic and other distinctions, posts held, travels, other books and their publishers, journals written for, broadcasting and so on; about 150 words in length. You should also list your membership of professional bodies/learned associations. Please do not be unduly modest; such details will help us find a market for your book, and to have it suitably talked or written about. Any unusual circumstances surrounding the research for this book should also be included. 8 Previous Sussex Academic or Alpha Press books Include year of publication if known. 2

3 3 9 Areas of specialization Please list areas of current interest / research / specialization. You may be invited to discuss / speak about these subjects at literary forums and to the media. 10 Office address Postal and street delivery details. 4 4 13 The book itself Please give a short description in simple, non-technical language which sales staff, booksellers and readers in all countries can understand. What is it about? Its purpose? Its special importance? Please write for a general audience, even if a fellow specialist would find the description obvious. Ideally, we would prefer a complete short description in no more than 50 words, followed by another 150 words of amplification. Please list twenty keywords that readers would look for in the index. (This is helpful for customers searching electronically on the Sussex Academic website) 14 Special features Please list at least three points which emphasize the special selling features of your book. This information will help us to describe the special features of your book in just a few words, as is sometimes necessary. MARKETING AND PROMOTION Our promotion of your book begins as soon as the manuscript is accepted. Long before the first copy is produced, we must give clear information to sales staff and booksellers both in the UK, US and overseas and ensure your book is designed to appeal to the right market. Your answers to the following questions are important because of your particular knowledge of what the book tries to do. They will add to our present general understanding of the work. Important: Please provide full postal and addresses where necessary. We are unable to conduct searches with incomplete information. Thank you. 4

5 5 15 Buyers Who may be expected to buy the book? Please be as specific as possible about level and types of buyers. 16 Regional interest Are there any areas (e.g. counties, states, countries) in which there is particular interest in the subject dealt with in your book? 17 Competition VERY IMPORTANT: Are there existing books which will compete with yours? (Please list them, including publisher and year of publication. Do you know of any other books which are in preparation? In what respect is your book superior, different, or complementary? YOUR ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS WILL HELP US ENORMOUSLY IN PREPARING THE PROPER MARKETING FOCUS 18 Societies Which professional societies, associations and/or industrial / commercial organizations will be most interested in your book? Where possible, please specify if there is a bulletin or newsletter and provide details of a contact who can deal with enquiries about mailing / advertising. Please mark with an asterisk the societies or organizations to which you belong. 19 Special sales Are there any societies or other organizations who might want to sponsor or purchase your book in quantity? Please give names and addresses (if possible) on a separate sheet. 20 Individual buyers Best way forward is if you your potential individual buyers an advertising sheet, which will provide direct telephone ordering numbers for the UK and US. Please let the Press know if you intend to do this, and we shall supply you with the relevant file. 5

6 6 21 Exhibitions Are there any particular exhibitions or conferences where we should publicize your book? Please give details of place and date (with name and address of Organizer if known). 22 On-line Please list with addresses any Internet bulletin boards that would welcome announcement of your book s publication. The Press will prepare for you a final advertising sheet, which will include a colour image of the cover and ordering information, just before publication of your book. You can then forward this sheet to colleagues via Awards / Book Prizes The Press no longer provides gratis copies to Book Award / Book Prize Committees. If as Author you wish to submit your book for an award or prize, we can arrange for the required number of copies to be sent to the prize/award body, and we shall give you a substantial discount on the costs involved in meeting the Award Committee book sending requirements. In practice this means that if you want to submit your book for an Award/Prize you will need to provide us with all relevant information with respect to forwarding copies of your book to the relevant Committee (pl. note that this sometimes means submitting between 6 and 12 different addresses of committee readers, according to instructions). Once we receive the instructions from you we will alert you to the cost of the exercise and raise an invoice. Important: We cannot send books to PO Boxes. 6

7 24 Journals Please list the most important journals relevant to your book (including the obvious main journals in addition to the more obscure media). Include society newsletters and bulletins if they publish reviews. If you have close contacts with any of these journals please mark with an asterisk. List five questions you would like to be asked in an interview. This will give us an idea of the kind of topics you are comfortable discussing and help us to target the most appropriate media

8 8 28 Engagements Please give details of any important speaking engagements which could help the marketing of your book. 29 Bookshop If you have a bookshop where you are known, please supply details so that we may draw its special attention to your book. TEXTBOOKS Only complete the remaining questions if your book is suitable for course adoption or is recommended as a textbook. 30 Subjects and departments Where is your book likely to be adopted? Please specify departments and subjects. 31 Level For what student level and year would your book be suitable? 32 Special points Are there any particular points about your book which should be stressed, i.e. sections which are especially new or different in approach, particular help for students etc.? 33 Institutions Please list universities or institutions world-wide where there are courses likely to be suitable for your book. Use separate sheets of paper if necessary. [Please note: Sussex Academic does not provide publicity services. A publicist actively seeks press coverage for their client in terms of book tours and lectures. Sussex Academic cannot provide this service. The Press does not automatically arrange book launches.
