Background The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is a multi-stakeholder organization with members across the world working together to increase understanding of sustainable tourism practices and to advocate for the adoption of universal sustainable tourism principles. The GSTC is designed to work with local communities to protect and sustain the world s natural and cultural resources while ensuring tourism meets its potential as a tool for sustainable development and poverty alleviation. The proliferation of certification schemes around the world, combined with the limited access of small and medium enterprises to certification processes, has led to replication of efforts, false or unverified claims ( greenwashing ), and consumer confusion. There is both a need and an opportunity to make certification systems more credible and visible by fostering and ensuring conformity to globally-accepted criteria and standards, in particular the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria ( Since the launch of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2008, the GSTC has been working diligently on key activities to reach universal adoption of the sustainable tourism criteria. One of those activities has been to develop training materials and to work with industry, governments, educational consultancies and academic institutions to amplify and disseminate training course resources. Those training materials need to be delivered by authorised GSTC Trainers.

3 3 2. Trainers Qualifications for 3-day and 5-day Courses The GSTC seeks trainers who are true experts in global sustainable tourism. The preferred qualifications for trainers are: ü Substantial experience delivering short training courses or other education programs. ü A university undergraduate or graduate qualification in a discipline such as environment, sustainability or tourism management. ü At least ten years professional experience in environmental and/or sustainable management (any industry). ü At least five years professional experience in environmental and/or sustainable management in tourism. ü Peer recognition as an expert in sustainable tourism with a solid awareness of global trends (e.g. active participation in some form of global sustainable tourism organization/networking etc.). ü Skills in developing clear and concise best practices documents for use as a teaching tool ü For delivering the 5-day course, a trainer must have had experience in the managing, auditing and or developing a sustainable tourism certification system. ü Willingness to sign a GSTC Confidentiality Agreement, agreeing to hold GSTC training content in confidence, in any form including print or digital.

4 4 3. Qualifications for 1-day Course Trainers The GSTC may endorse trainers who do not fully meet the above criteria to deliver the one-day training course. After five of the one-day courses have been successfully delivered, a review of suitability by the trainer for delivering the 3- and 5-day trainings may be undertaken by the GSTC. 4. Trainers endorsed by & at the discretion of the GSTC Trainers may only be appointed by the GSTC, following a recommendation by the Training Selection Panel. Appointment as a trainer is by invitation and is not a right upon application. 5. Trainer involvement in course development Approved GSTC Trainers may be required to support two aspects of course development: language translation and knowledge base development. Both are dependent upon the particular situation of their language and region. Translation: If the training course content has not yet been translated into the language for which the trainer is applying, and no institutional/partner support is available to the GSTC, the trainer may need to translate the curriculum. Any trainers who undertake the translation will be offered right of first refusal as trainer for any GSTC training courses in that language for a period of two years. Knowledge Base: Trainers may be required to document best practices from their geographical region to use as teaching tools. Such content will be stored in the GSTC knowledge base and become the shared intellectual property of the author and the GSTC.

5 5 6. Application Requirements Candidates must submit the following to: 1. Cover letter stating interest and motivation to become a GSTC trainer. 2. A document listing the following information: a. Legal name (as it appears on passport) b. Nationality c. Contact information: mailing address, address, Skype screen name, telephone number(s) d. Secondary contact information 3. Curriculum Vitae (CV) note: additional evidence of any of the qualifications stated in this document that do not appear in the CV may be added to the document described in item #2 above. 4. Three one-page documents of best practices in their region to use as teaching examples of sustainability practices in action. Each must reference at least three practices that speak to separate GSTC criteria. 5. Applicants are encouraged but not required -- to send letters of reference from professional contacts that can objectively support the application and the applicant s qualifications. GSTC will strive to promptly acknowledge receipt of applications, followed within three weeks with a decision. 7. Trainer Selection Panel The GSTC has established a Trainer Selection Panel consisting of three members for a two-year period until June 30, Randy Durband, GSTC CEO. 2.
