19 Life is a Paradise of Lies is the first solo exhibition by Hannu Palosuo in Denmark. The exhibition has retrospective character and presents a special selection of Hannu Palosuo s works from the past decade and up-to-date. During the last 10 years, the artist has changed motifs, but never left the most essential part - the sensing of something that is not there, the reaching for this something, and the longing. Palosuo s main inspiration comes from the artists own life, along references to Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde - The mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible. In Palosuo s paintings there is often a chair instead of the saint. The chair in his paintings, goes beyond its function to become Palosuo s true signature, a sign and the metaphore that relates to humanity, but also to bring a static element - the memory. While our eyes are engaged in the act of seeing, our souls start remembering and unconsciously bring something from our own lives, to the painting of Palosuo. We do not only see the object of his painting but also a part of ourselves. Palosuo senses the inconsistency of being. Feelings are permanently transferred to his canvas. Palosuo s painting is a way to immortalize, it remembers and elaborates the artist's significant memories... if these walls could speak... His painting style is beautiful the images with masterly brushed strokes, are visually compelling. The simplicity along the uncontrollable shadows and the feeling of timelessness, might be the reason for interpreting Palosuo s paintings - as being embedded with the Scandinavian or even Russian concept of slow time, while expressing deepest feelings. Also in the series The Rest of Nothing the shadow is present, but the background is left untouched, what we see is the mere canvas. Palosuo often plays with the illusion of painting, and let the raw material, the canvas itself, be as one layer of the painting. The many experiments with materials, the blend of different techniques, are part of Palosuo s explorations of his inner reality. Transparency in Palosuo s works is always strongly highlighted, his objects with their silhouettes on a raw canvas, give the viewer ability, and space, to project their own meaning. Transparency and emptiness are, however, only the second half of the paradox, because his works are otherwise full of strong references. In Palosuo's works beauty is extortive, because their spirit is linked to a kind of counsel. His art seems to say: "Look again, notice and re-think." (Shakespeare) A close observation of Hannu Palosuo's works unmistakably unveils the feeling of a faded dream world. Shakespeare lets Prospero, duke of Milan in his "Tempest", utter the above words to depict a hardly understandable reality. By the same token, Palosuo describes his reality through his imagery. The first striking impression is that of all-out void. Nothing appears to happen on the canvas. The narration, the message, the event, takes place before the image comes to life or maybe later, outside the scene. As Prospero watches his world disappear, Palosuo senses the inconsistency of being. His life is permanently transferred to the canvas.
