Our mission: To create healthy learning environments that are inclusive, supportive, and safe, and where sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions are respected. We pursue: We pursue our mission through advocacy, education, and community building. In this MnSOC E-News: 2008 Meeting Schedule Finding Camps that Fit Summer Camp Opportunities for LGBT Families Mark Your Calendar Second Annual Trans Community Health & Wellness Fair May 9 10, 2008 The Garage QQA Prom May 23, 2008 District 202 Prom May 24, 2008 Youth Pride in the Park June 4, 2008 Twin Cities Trans March June 28, 2008 Twin Cities Pride Festival June 28 29, 2008 Next MnSOC Monthly Meeting, Wednesday May 14 th from 5:00 pm 7:00 pm The meeting takes place at Family & Children s Service, 4123 East Lake Street, in Minneapolis, just a few blocks east of the Blue Moon Café. All invited! The statewide resource mapping project group will meet from 3:30-5 on May 14 th at FCS anyone interested in being a part of this project is invited Meeting Schedule All meetings are held at FCS Lake Street Branch, 4123 East Lake Street from 5:00 pm 7:00 pm in the first floor Community Room. Wednesday May 14 th Discussion Intersection of Racism & Homophobia Wednesday June 11 th end of school year party Finding Camps that Fit Whether your kids want the chance to spend time with other youth and adults who grew up in LGBT-headed families, your whole family wants to camp with other families like yours, or you want to find a resort where you will be welcomed, Rainbow Rumpus has you covered. Our
2 sponsors of this month s camping issue, Fair Hills Resort in Minnesota and Friends Music Camp in Ohio, provide fun and supportive environments for families and youth. Fair Hills has tennis, golf, swimming, and boating. You can do activities with your kids or have the Fair Hills staff entertain them. Then, in the evening, have your family meet up for a delicious dinner and a talent show. Friends Music Camp supports youth in developing their instrumental, singing, and performing skills. Mark Your Calendars! Second Annual Trans Community Health & Wellness Fair May 9 & 10, 2008 An event for trans and gender variant people, partners, friends, family, medical providers, allies and community -- presented by the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition. Free, with meals provided (Fri. dinner, Sat. breakfast & lunch; vegan, vegetarian, or meat option), and everyone is welcome! To register, to volunteer, or if you have questions, go to our website at call us at , or mntranshealth@yahoo.com May 1 is the pre-registration deadline (you can also register at the door, but we cannot guarantee your meals.) Location: South High School Enter through doors off the parking lot th Ave S Near bus lines 19 & 21 or Lake Street light rail station Minneapolis, MN Free parking lot, wheelchair accessible Community Housing is available for anyone coming from out of town needing a place to stay. Children's Activities will be offered both Friday night and Saturday all day. Fri, May 9, 6-9pm: Dinner (free!) followed by Keynote Speech by surgeon Marci Bowers, M.D. The program on Friday night will be ASL interpreted. Sat, May 10, 8:30am-6pm: Full day of 21 Workshops led by local and national health professionals, experts, trans community member and allies, Health Screenings, Information Tables, Chair Massage & more! The lunch program on Saturday will be ASL interpreted. Health screenings will include confidential and free OraSure HIV testing, blood pressure, cholesterol, and more. KEYNOTE: From Madness to Maternity: seeking gender identity in a dysphoric world Dr. Bowers will mix anecdote, humor and medical information in her review of gender-related issues. Additional Special Guests: Loren Schechter, M.D., surgeon from Morton Grove, Illinois will lead the workshop Gender Confirmation Surgery and Revision Vaginoplasty.
3 André Wilson, national expert on transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage (and last year's Keynote Speaker), will lead the workshop Getting Us Covered: advocacy for trans-inclusive health insurance. Cost to get in will be $10. This will be semi formal and people can dress in their favorite decade as casual or formal as they want. The following are some of the highlights we are planning:
