8 Q when the party s over & caring for a leather sofa A We just bought our first leather sofa. It s in our family room so it s going to take a beating ( we have a lot of football parties in there!). How can I keep it looking good? Marla, San Antonio, TX. Hi Marla You re going to love living with leather; congratulations on your investment! Here are few ways to keep your sofa looking great whatever it s subject to! Avoid placing your leather sofa in direct sunlight. Sunny windows or sunny skylights will cause all materials to fade over time; they can also cause leather to dry out or even crack. Keep the sofa away from heat, too. Try to maintain at least two feet between the sofa and any heating sources; too much exposure to heat vents and radiators may cause your leather to dry out. Remove spills right away. Leather is easy to wipe clean, but it s porous; liquid spills can penetrate the surface, making stains a little tougher to clean. Clean regularly, but with a light touch. Leather is more resistant to dust than fabric sofas, but like everything else in your home, it ll accumulate dust over time. Leather also has natural pores that need to breathe in order to stay resilient. Simply remove dust with a soft cloth. Vacuum away visible dirt, but use a soft brush (to avoid scratching the leather). Avoid cleaning leather with general household cleaning products, including furniture polish, ammonia, detergent soaps, most oils and any products containing solvents, silicones or alkaline.
