1 Workers Compensation Classification Rate Index For Experience Rated Employers - California January 2011 The Workers Compensation Classification Rate Index (Rate Index) studies changes in the market. The Rate Index analyzes changes in the approved pure premium rate filing (Expected Loss Rates and D-Ratios) and rate filing fluctuations of the largest workers compensation carriers in California. The Rate Index allow agents to anticipate possible point increases and decreases in rates. When choosing an industry to market, the Rate Index is a valuable tool. For example, an agent may want to spend time marketing to class code 4240 (Box Mfg. rigid paper boxes) because it has a high Volatility Ranking of 475, a Rate Index of 26.13% and a Pure Premium Rate of This means there is a good probability that this class code will see up to a 26.13% increase in the rate. The Rate Index predicts rate changes for each class code. The Rate Index and Rate Index Market Indicator is an invaluable tool for agents to identify which class codes will experience an overall increase or decrease, and how the overall market is trending. 1/2011 Volatility Ranking 01/2011 Rate Index (% Change) Sorted by Volatility Ranking For Policies Incepting between 1/1/2011 and 7/1/ /2011 Pure Premium Rate Class Code Sub Code Classification Description % Engineers consulting % Oil or Gas Geologists or Scouts % Geophysical Exploration % Oil or Gas Well Servicing % Asphalt Works % Briquette Mfg % Coke Mfg % Bottling % Gasket Mfg % Oil or Gas Wells wireline service companies % Oil or Gas Wells perforating of casing % Orthotic or Prosthetic Device Mfg % Fence Construction % Analytical or Testing Laboratories % Electric Light or Power Line Construction % Oil or Gas Refining Units % Oil Mfg. or Refining vegetable % Cottonseed Oil Mfg. or Refining % Police, Sheriffs, Constables, etc. not volunteers % Masonry equals or exceeds $ % Fruit or Vegetable Preserving % Olive Handling % Pickle Mfg. 1 of 17
