By reading these words, you are taking your first step in pursuing a post-secondary education at Qatar s leading technical college. As a father of two sons who have gone through this process, I know that parents of young adults have their own set of questions. Parents, CNA-Q s reputation, and the information this guide provides, will reassure you that you are sending your children to a place where they will become highly skilled, technologically competent, confident young adults ready to move forward in their careers. Many of our students refer to the CNA-Q college community as a family. As the second largest post-secondary institution in Qatar, CNA-Q has a rather large family. We have 2,400 + full-time students and 3,000 + alumni, plus 8,500 + graduates of part-time studies. We have Canadian instructors who now call Qatar home, and they will ensure our students receive a top-notch internationally accredited education. We officially opened in September CNA-Q fills the State s need for graduates that have hands-on training in their field of study and are ready to start work right away. As the second largest post-secondary school in Qatar, CNA-Q now has over 2,400 + full-time students. About CNA College of the North Atlantic is the public college of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Since its beginning in 1963, CNA has grown to 17 campuses in Newfoundland and Labrador. About 20,000 students per year attend CNA, choosing from 100 full-time programs and 300 part-time courses. 12

Wearing 3D glasses and using a handheld remote, students can dissect a human heart, perform an x-ray of a brain or peel away layers of muscle and skin. Opened in 2009, it is the first of its kind and one of only two in Qatar. 26

35 What is ESP? English for Specific Purposes (ESP) helps students learn the English they need to succeed in their program of study. Students improve their English through topics related to their program and enhance their vocabulary, grammar and study skills. What is EAP? English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provides students with a foundation for studying academic English. It is the same for all programs at the college. Students practice their listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, writing and grammar. The important parts of learning a language: Listening Speaking Reading Writing School of Language Studies and Academics Every full-time student at College of the North Atlantic Qatar will take at least one course at the School of Language Studies and Academics (LSA). LSA offers all the courses that students need to prepare for and complete their programs of study. Subjects include: English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Biology Chemistry Communications Mathematics Physics English as a Foreign Language The Language Studies Academic Preparatory Program (APP) is designed to help students achieve the language level needed to succeed in their program. It is offered to prepare students for: Business Studies Engineering Technology Health Sciences Information Technology Students entering these programs must write the Academic English Placement (AEP) test. Depending on their score, students either take APP courses or will enter directly into their chosen program. APP courses are divided into three stages: Stage 1. Fundamental Skills Stage 2. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Stage 3. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) 32

Abdulaziz Al-Bin Ali Paramedicine, Class of 2007 Health and Hygiene Supervisor, HSSE Directorate, Qatar Foundation Academic Studies Academic Preparatory Studies ensure that students are prepared in math, sciences and communications in order to succeed in their areas of study. These programs also ensure that students are eligible for Canadian credentials when they finish their studies and that they meet international certification requirements. These courses also provide extra support for students who do not meet entrance requirements and for English language training tailored to specific needs. Areas include: Biology Subjects such as microbiology, ecology, anatomy and human systems are especially important for health-related programs. Mathematics Provides the foundation for concepts that students must understand to complete their programs. Students learn skills such as problem solving, statistical analysis and logic. Physics Aspects such as heat, sound and light are important for students working with x-rays, electricity, mechanics and more. Physics is especially important for students studying in engineering and health sciences fields. Chemistry Topics such as the periodic table, acids and bases, and chemical bonding are especially important in the oil and gas industry and environmental and health sectors. 34

38 STUDENT SUPPORT Academic Help Centres The School of Language Studies and Academics offers help centres across various subjects to provide students with assistance outside the classroom. They are open to all students; book appointments or come by on a drop-in basis. Help Centres are located in the Learning Commons in Building 3 (except the Science Help Centre, which is in ). Centres are usually open between 8:00am to 4:00pm, Sunday to Thursday. Advanced Writing Centre The Advanced Writing Centre (AWC) helps students with their writing in a quiet and friendly learning environment. Instructors provide oneon-one tutoring and offer extensive learning resources. The AWC can assist with: Report writing Technical theses Grammar Citations Presentations Job applications Letter writing Memos Research University applications Essays 35

39 Independent Learning Centre The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) assists students with classroom English skills, projects, reports, presentations and more. The Conversation Corner is designed for students and instructors to chat in a comfortable setting. This provides students with a chance to practice their social English language skills. Remedial assistance is available for students to receive one-on-one support and feedback in a private setting. Science Help Centre The Science Help Centre provides extra assistance in biology, chemistry and physics. It is located in a science lab (5.1.13) so that students can use equipment and access any resources needed. Math Help Centre Instructors from the Math Department provide one-on-one assistance for students. Textbooks for all math courses are available for reference. Before, I had a lot of difficulties with math. The instructors here took it step by step, so my grades got better and I understand it more. Nour Masri Business Administration Marketing, Class of

We have a range of activities that enable our students to learn more about their interests, their talents and themselves. Students Representative Council CNA-Q students have the opportunity to join the Students Representative Council (SRC). The SRC represents the entire student population, working cooperatively with the college to represent student interests. A new SRC is elected every year. Positions include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and coordinators of various projects. Joining the debate club has allowed me to become a better student and a better person; it has also given me the chance to see the world and broaden my horizons. 41 Sports and Recreation Being healthy is an important part of learning. CNA-Q promotes participation in activities as an important part of health and wellness. We offer separate male and female gymnasiums, fitness facilities and swimming pools. We also have a football/soccer field and tennis courts. Students can also join male or female teams in sports such as basketball, badminton and tennis. Female students hold dance competitions every year. A range of fitness classes are offered in the female gymnasium every semester in areas such as yoga, salsa dancing and step aerobics. Male students can join the football and rugby teams. CNA-Q teams compete against other schools in Doha. As well, a number of competitions are held each year for male students, such as the Strong Student Competition, Bench Press Competition and Biathlon (swimming and running). The Scribe is CNA-Q s student newsletter, addressing events and issues that pertain to students. All students can submit items such as articles, photographs, comics or poetry. The Scribe is distributed twice per year. 38

42 International Education Week CNA-Q hosts International Education Week each year to create awareness of the different cultures on campus and to learn more about international education opportunities.

43 International Education The International Education office assists in the coordination of activities that involve CNA-Q students going outside the country and visiting others from around the world. Study Abroad Activities: Full semester exchange Short term study abroad programs: Language and cultural emersion Study tours International internship/workterm Student participation in international conferences and events Volunteering overseas Work site visits and internships ROTA partnership trip to Bangladesh In partnership with Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) in April 2012, 30 CNA-Q students and staff travelled to Bangladesh for nine days. They led activities and workshops to increase access to education in the Cox s Bazaar district of southeast Bangladesh. Bangladesh was a complete learning experience for me, which no book or scholar could have taught me...cna-q and ROTA gave me a memorable experience that will be with me for life. 44 CNA-Q Skills Competition This annual event, modelled on skills competitions held throughout the world, invites students to showcase the skills they have acquired in their program of study. Selected students will represent Qatar at the GCC Skills Competition. Student Achievements CNA-Q students have many opportunities to be rewarded for both their academic and extracurricular success. Honour Society Honour standing is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptionally high academic performance. President s Medal of Excellence This medal is awarded to one graduating student in each program with the highest academic achievement. Scholarships Many scholarships are awarded by CNA-Q in areas such as high academic achievement, performance in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and leadership.

45 Counselling At CNA-Q, we want to ensure that you have a positive college experience. Counselling services are available to assist you in achieving your academic and personal goals. These services are voluntary, confidential and free. Services include: Career counselling Personal counselling Peer tutoring Assistance with special needs 42

46 CNA-Q in the Community Since its beginnings in 2002, CNA-Q has become an active member of the Qatar community. Here are some examples of our initiatives. CNA-Q Holiday Bazaar Each fall, CNA-Q hosts a bazaar for local craftspeople to sell clothes, jewellery, artwork and more. In addition to supporting local businesses, CNA-Q also donates all proceeds to charity. Terry Fox Run This annual charity event is held at CNA-Q and in regions around the world in recognition of Terry Fox, a Canadian hero who died in 1982 while running across Canada to raise money for cancer. Over $600 CA million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry s name. Desert Cup CNA-Q sponsors an annual weekend hockey tournament at Villaggio each year as a tribute to this popular Canadian sport. Teams compete from Doha, Bahrain and the UAE for the prized trophy. Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) To date, CNA-Q initiatives have raised over 38,000 QR for ROTA. In 2011, CNA-Q signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ROTA to work together on teacher training initiatives in order to build capacity in primary and secondary education in Asia.

47 Celebrating Culture CNA-Q is very proud of the cultural diversity of its student body, representing over 25 countries from around the world. CNA-Q s Student Affairs department hosts events throughout the year to celebrate our Qatari culture, such as: Iftar Dinner Garanga oh Global Village Jalsa Night (men only) Wanasa Night (women only) Begun in 2005, Global Village has become a highlight of the year for students and staff alike. Open to the community, over 2,000 people visit the village during the two-night event. In the past, booths have raised donations for local and international charities including Japan relief, Terry Fox Foundation and the Qatar Cancer Society. Last year, the Canadian booth raised over 5,000 QR, through the sale of coffee and baked goods, for Qatar Red Crescent s Syria Relief Fund. The two-day Global Village event showcases the cultures represented by students at CNA-Q. Last year there were 17 student booths representing countries as well as booths from Canada and Qatar. Each group decorates their booth to represent their home country with paintings, rugs, artwork and traditional food. 44

49 APPLICATION CHECKLIST Here s what you will need to apply: Completed application form Pick one up at the Registrar s Office in Building 1 or download it from the college website at: Documents/CNAQ_application_form.pdf Official copy of secondary school grades If you have not attended a State school, we will provide you with a letter to take to the Ministry of Education to validate your grades. Copy of passport (photo page) Copy of Qatar National Identification Card Letter of sponsorship from the sponsoring organization (if applicable) Processing fee of 100 QR REGISTRATION Just follow these four easy steps: 1. Submit your application (please refer to the Application Checklist to the left). 2. Write our entrance examination (English and Math placement test). 3. Wait to hear from the college if you have been accepted to your program. Once accepted: 4. Register for your program during the scheduled registration time at the beginning of each semester. Students in their final year of high school will be accepted conditionally pending receipt of final exam results. Students must be legal residents of Qatar and possess a Residency Permit ID number in order to be eligible to apply to the college.
