1 Fire Fighter Recruitment Application Guide Thank you for your interest in the Town of Innisfil s 2014 Fire Fighter recruitment process. We are excited that you are considering a career with us! Innisfil is the perfect place to live, work and play. We are looking for dedicated, team focused and committed individuals to join the Innisfil Fire and Rescue Service as Fire Fighters. Responsible for all aspects of firefighting, you will combat, extinguish, and prevent fires as well as save life and protect property while working rapidly and efficiently under considerable hazards to mitigate emergency incidents, assist with fire prevention activities and develop and deliver public education activities to the community. Preferred candidates have a community college diploma in Fire Protection Technology or are a graduate of a recognized Pre-Service Fire Fighter education and training program and have a minimum of three (3) years practical experience in the fields of fire protection, prevention and emergency planning or have a high school diploma and a minimum of five (5) years of practical experience in the field of fire protection and prevention. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed the OFM General Fire Curriculum (Component Testing 1, 2, 3 & 4) and/or NFPA 1001, Levels I & II. Candidates must be physically fit, strong communicators, have a valid DZ driver s license, valid First Aid and CPR certificates and be available to work day shifts on a rotating schedule to meet the requirements of the department. To become a Fire Fighter with the Innisfil Fire and Rescue Service, candidates must pass through all six (6) stages of the recruitment process. 2 Stage 1 Application Process Candidates are required to submit a detailed cover letter and resume outlining their experience, education and certifications. As part of the application process, copies of the following must be included: York University Fitness Test and/or Candidate Phyisical Abilitry Test (CPAT) - See page 3 regarding required elements Proof of Education: copy of: - Community College Diploma in Fire Protection Technology - Community College Diploma in a Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program - High School Diploma Valid DZ license Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates ** All copies must be clear and legible ** All associated costs are the responsibility of the candidate Applications can be submitted to Human Resources, quoting file # FIRE by March 26, 2014 via: mail or in person to: Human Resources 2101 Innisfil Beach Road Innisfil, ON L9S 1A1 to hr@innisfil.ca Fax to Late applications and/or applications missing any of the required information will not be considered. 3 Fitness Test and/or Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) The following tests will be accepted: York University Fire Fighter Applicant Fitness Test Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) from either Firefighter Services of Ontario (formerly Brock) or Waterloo The following elements must be completed and reflected when you submit your application: Fitness Swim test and/or watertread test Vision Hearing We will accept tests dated no earlier than September 30, Candidates must make their own arrangements with the testing facilities. Please contact them directly to confirm upcoming dates. All associated costs are the responsibility of the candidate. Stage 2 Aptitude Test Phase Short-listed candidates from the application stage will be required to participate in the aptitude test on Saturday April 12, Testing details will be provided to short-listed candidates. All testing costs are the responsibility of the candidate. You will be made aware of your test results by Human Resources. Successful completion of the aptitude test does not guarantee an interview. 3

4 Stage 3 Interview Phase Short-listed candidates from the aptitude test phase will be invited to attend an interview. The interview panel will consist of the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and a Human Resources Representative. Interviews will be conducted the weeks of April 28 and May 5, Stage 4 Background Screening Phase Candidates short-listed after the interview phase will be required to undergo a complete background screening consisting of: Education verification Reference checks Criminal record check, including vulnerable sector screening Medical screening/examination (based on Town provided form) at candidate s own cost Stage 5 Offers of Employment Phase Upon review of the completed background screening and medical screening/examination, offers of employment will be issued. The Town reserves the right to terminate a candidate s participation in the recruitment process should any of the information in the background screening and/or medical screening/ examination not meet the Town s standards. 4

5 Stage 6 Eligibility List Phase A ranked eligibility list of qualified candidates from the interview phase of the recruitment process will be developed and maintained for a period of eighteen (18) months. Qualified candidates will be advised of their placement on the ranked eligibility list. New or vacant Fire Fighter positions during this period will be filled through the ranked eligibility list. Candidates will be required to undergo a complete background screening and medical screening/examination, as well as provide an up to date fitness assessment (dated within six (6) months of the date contacted). Upon review of the completed documents, offers of employment will be made (subject to the documents meeting the Town standards). Personal information received in response to this Fire Fighter recruitment is collected under the authority of the Municipal Act to determine eligibility for employment.
