Focus on Student Success!
Kilgore College is strategically planning the next steps for our future, steps that focus on student success, the core of our mission. We proclaim that our existence is tied to preparing students for success by offering educational opportunities with high quality, great value, easy access, and community focus. Student success is not just our mission; it is our passion! We know that teaching occurs only when learning occurs and that the investments of the students, their families, the community, our government, and all stakeholders demand successful outcomes and a well-prepared workforce. We commit to creating a clear pathway for student success which leads to the mastery of essential skills, to transferability to universities, and to employability. Not only must we move students through developmental classes to achieve college-level credentials and transfer, we must prepare students to enter the workforce competently and to become productive, well-trained citizens. We Student success is not just our mission; it is our passion! will engage in partnerships with our local school districts, with business and industry, and with other vital organizations to achieve this goal. Kilgore College must create a culture and an environment that honestly reflect the beliefs we proclaim. This culture and environment are reflected not only in the manner in which we develop and cultivate relationships and in the ways in which we interact and treat one another, but also in our physical environment and surroundings. Every aspect of our being must reflect our motto, Emphasis Excellence. Finally, we dedicate ourselves to generating the resources to accomplish our mission. With declining funding from the public sector, we cannot continue to depend on rising student tuition to serve as the sole source of increased revenue. Kilgore College now must create a culture of resource development which sustains and grows this institution as it endeavors to meet the needs of our community. Join us! Help us! Become a partner as we continue to prepare students for success in our future! Dr. Bill Holda Welcome President
Mission & Vision MISSION Kilgore College prepares students for success in life by providing educational opportunities that have high quality, great value, easy access, and community focus. Taking as its motto Emphasis Excellence, Kilgore College promotes high quality in all of its operations: teaching and learning which lead to certificates and associate degrees, administrative and educational support services, and public service. Kilgore College promotes great value primarily for its 20-member school district service area in Northeast Texas by providing educational opportunities at a competitive cost. Kilgore College promotes easy access through open-door admission, distance learning opportunities, dual credit courses, developmental education, and a comprehensive financial aid program. Kilgore College promotes community focus through workforce education programs and through public service endeavors including workforce and small business development, Adult Basic Education, continuing education, athletics, and the fine arts. VISION We will lead through instruction, technology, and cultural development each characterized by creativity, innovation, and ingenuity. We will exhibit caring in all our relationships as we serve our students and our community. Did you know... During the academic year, Kilgore College served over 16,000 credit and noncredit students.
Strategic Goal 1 Student Success OBJECTIVE 1 Improve student success in developmental English, reading, & mathematics Kilgore College will help its students become better prepared for college-level courses by employing proven best practices in the developmental education curriculum. We believe that our increasingly diverse student population needs a welcoming, engaging, and supportive environment in which to experience and sustain success. We commit to examining and, when necessary, to changing institutional culture in order to facilitate all students expeditious transition from developmental to college-level curricula. STRATEGIES Redesign course delivery systems in developmental courses Develop a mentoring program for students who are not initially successful in developmental courses Expand capacity of the college success course Develop a mentoring program for underachieving student groups in order to narrow the achievement gaps among students OBJECTIVE 2 Improve student success in college-level courses and credentials Kilgore College will actively support the national student success and completion agenda by helping students reach completion milestones. We believe that our students and our community benefit when students successfully complete courses and programs of study that help better prepare them for acquiring and maintaining jobs in the work force and/ or for transferring successfully to a university setting. We commit to applying our motto, Emphasis Excellence, to student persistence, engagement, and learning throughout the college curriculum. STRATEGIES Foster reading improvement across the curriculum Employ a variety of student engagement strategies Review and revise, as necessary, institutional policies, procedures, and practices to maximize students potential for success Provide professional development opportunities for full-time and adjunct faculty and staff
Strategic Goal 1 Student Success OBJECTIVE 3 Initiate and develop partnerships with service area schools and universities to enhance student success Kilgore College will actively pursue partnerships with other educational institutions to facilitate student transitions. We believe that effective communication with other educational personnel is critical in helping students effectively navigate the transition from secondary school to higher education and, when applicable, from community college to a university setting. We commit to pursuing the necessary partnerships that will facilitate our students successful transitioning throughout their post-secondary educational experiences. STRATEGIES Work with service area school districts to develop transition strategies, especially with regard to enhancing students preparedness for college-level course work Facilitate the reverse transfer of credits from other colleges and universities Did you know... During the academic year, Kilgore College awarded 751 degrees and 665 certificates.
Strategic Goal 2 Learning Environment OBJECTIVE Improve the physical and relational components of the college environment that contribute to student success Kilgore College will address environmental factors which contribute to student and employee morale as well as to student learning. We believe that the quality of relationships among members of a community as well as the environment in which members of a community interact are powerful components which contribute to student achievement. We commit to improving the setting in which our community of learners interacts. STRATEGIES Review and update the facilities master plan to consider student space (e.g., library and computer labs) Develop a plan to enhance the exterior appearance of Kilgore and Longview campuses Foster positive relationships between Kilgore College employees and students
Strategic Goal 3 Long-term Financial Sustainability OBJECTIVE Focus on resource diversification to ensure the support of ongoing student success Kilgore College will engage in focused activity that will result in significant financial contributions to the Kilgore College Foundation. We believe that we must adapt our mental framework of traditional revenue sources to be consistent with emerging financial realities. We commit to reallocating human, physical, and financial resources in order to create a financial structure which can sustain the student success and completion agenda. STRATEGY Develop and implement a comprehensive/integrated resource development plan which includes a. restructuring the current Institutional Advancement Office b. restructuring the organization of the College to support the president s serving as the chief advancement officer and c. providing professional development opportunities for Foundation directors, Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff to support the long-term financial sustainability plan Did you know... A recent EMSI economic impact study indicated that taxpayers see a return of 15% on their annual investments in Kilgore College.
