2 About the presenters: 1. Mr. James P. Avery is the chief Development Officer for SDG&E, a regulated subsidiary of Sempra Energy, a San Diego-based Fortune 500 energy services holding company whose subsidiaries provide electricity, natural gas and valueadded products and services. As Chief Development Officer, Avery is responsible for establishing the long-term vision for SDG&E and capitalizing on new technologies, policies, and initiatives that will lead SDG&E into the future. In addition, Avery is responsible for the company s Electric Vehicle Grid Integration. Prior to assuming his current responsibilities, Avery has held the positions of Senior Vice President, Power Supply, and Senior Vice President, Electric. Prior to joining SDG&E, Avery was a consultant with R.J. Rudden Associates, one of the nation s leading management and economic consulting firms specializing in energy and utility matters. Avery has extensive experience in utility operations and management. He was the chief executive officer of the electric and gas operations at Citizens Utilities Company, a multi-service organization that provided electric, gas, telecom, water and wastewater services in 21 states across the nation. He is the Chairman of the California Transmission Planning Group, a Director of the California Power Exchange and has served as a Director of Vermont Electric Power Company, RJ Rudden Associates and he held positions at American Electric Power. He is a board member of Cleantech San Diego. 2. Dr. Richard M. Gersberg is currently a Professor of Environmental Health and Interim Director of the Graduate School of Public Health at SDSU. He has an M.S. degree in Biology and a Ph.D degree in Environmental Microbiology from the University of California, Davis. Dr. Gersberg specializes in water quality research, and has broad experience with both drinking water and wastewater treatment, as well as ecological and human health risk assessments for chemicals of concern. Dr. Gersberg has conducted a number of studies on the detection, quantitation, and risk posed by metals, viruses, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals and person care products in aquatic systems. He is currently a member of the Independent Advisory Panel for two indirect potable reuse projects in the region- the City of San Diego s Water Purification Demonstration Project and Padre Dam Municipal Water District s Full Advanced Water Treatment (FAT) Demonstration Project.
3 3. Dr. Ping Liu serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy (ARPA-E), where he initiated the RANGE and the DELTA programs. RANGE develops innovative energy storage solutions for electric vehicles, while DELTA supports localized heating and cooling solutions to reduce building energy consumption. Dr. Liu was previously Manager of Energy Technology at HRL Laboratories. Prior to HRL, Dr. Liu was a research staff with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. His research interests include electrochemical energy conversion and storage, sensors, actuators, and materials chemistry. Dr. Liu received his PhD in Chemistry from Fudan University in China. 4. Dr. Ke Sun is currently a postdoctoral fellow advised by Professor Nathan Lewis in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and in the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) in Caltech. He holds his B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D degrees from the Beijing Institute of Technology, University of South Florida, and University of California, San Diego in 2003, 2009 and 2013, respectively, all in Electrical Engineering. As a graduate student, he focused on hierarchically-structured nanomaterials from synthesis to applications in biosensors, optoelectronics, and photoelectrochemical systems. Dr. Sun has established an outstanding publication record having published in top-ranked journals and having been widely cited for his contribution to the protection of photoelectrodes and general photoelectrochemistry. 5. Mr. Byron Washom is the Director of Strategic Energy Initiatives at UCSD where he plays a leading role in energy management and green-house gas reductions with campus wide projects such as Smart Grid Integration; advanced secure, reliable, affordable and clean energy solutions; mitigation of regulated pollutants and greenhouse gases; distributed generation: photovoltaic, combined heat and power, and fuel cell technology areas. Before joining UC San Diego, he was the founder and President of Spencer Management Associates, which served the advanced energy and environmental technology goals of a diverse client base of international corporations, multi-lateral lending institutions, governments, and national research organizations. Mr. Washom founded Advanco Corp which in 1984 set the long standing world records for solar electric conversion efficiency at 29.4% with the Vanguard Parabolic Dish Stirling Project. He served as an energy advisor to many private and federal and state government agencies.
