Reproducton s not permtted wthout the wrtten ~rmlsslon of the Publsher. Terraces Chamber of Commerce s n deep trouble. The total lack of nterest demonstrated n the organzatons recent electon of offcers s ample proof of that. Many a nook and cranny was searched for a sutable canddate for the chambers presdency. There were no takers. Fnally Juanta Hatten, an actve chamber member, put her name forward and was elected by acclamaton. A number of chamber members are known to be upset wth the choce. A member of the executve has already resgned because of t. Hatten, who runs an employment agency called the Golden Rule, s far from the deal choce. The fact she s not a popular choce, and that she s not a busness representatve n the true sense of the word, wll make her job more dffcult. The real problem les, however, not wth the choce of Hatten, but rather wth the lack of nterest shown by the communty. The organzaton was formed to promote communty commercal and ndustral actvty and toursm. Busness people though, seem not to care about supportng an organzaton whch s promotng ther welfare. George Clark, a chamber vce-presdent, says people are smply not nterested n gettng nvolved, especally f thngs are runnng relatvely smoothly. Whle there are 70 chamber of commerce members, there are barely seven or eght actve ones. Clark thnks the chamber s n real danger of foldng because of apathy. On a smlarnote,r.clark also wonders f theapathy s spreadng. He says there s a real problem these days n gettng people nterested n the actvtes of such servce organzatons as the Jaycees, the Lons, and the Knsmen. t would seem logcal the exstence of an actve ehamher of commerce s the sgn of a vtal and growng communty. But as n the case of Ktmat a few years back, the chamber may de off leavng people to wonder why. ts an unfortunate fact of lfe that absence makes the heart grow fender. "... The cause of death was a horse wanderng on the hghway." The news report told about a sngle car accdent n whch one man was klled. He had been drvng on a d,~rk, rany nght and dd not see the horse untl t was too late. No one was blam~l for the accdent. dd not qute agree that the man had ded as a result of hs own carelessness, or that t was smply an act :,of God, assumng that God would do a thng such as that. thought back to the many neur-msaes that had experenced over the years. Cattle, horses, dogs, moose and varous other types of wldlfe have often crossed my path, sometmes uncomfortably close. And also thought about a practce that s all to prevalent n my area, that of allowng domestc anmals to roam at large, unfenced and uncared for. t s not dffcult to magne the damage and annoyance that these beats can cause. have often asked the owners f they would at least keep ther anmals off the hghway. 1 have talked to law offcers and warned other motorsts of the danger. concluded that most owners of lvestock n ths area are ndfferent to the fate of ther anmals. There s an amusng quck to ths ndfference. Let me llustrate: Al Forbush owned several horses. None of them beleved n fences and M ddnt provde many for them to contemplate, n any case. One day asked hm to come over and remove them from my felds, le refused, sayng that he dd not own any horses; they must belong to someone else. Some weeks later one of them was run over by a skdder and klled. A1 was there wthn mnutes, to try to collect for one dead horse!! wonder f we wll see the tme when all people wll be held responsble for ther lvestock; fencng and feedng and carng for them and payng for any damage they cause to others. Owners would be fned for allowng ther anmals to roam on any publc hghway. A Forbush and hs lke would dsagree, of course. Letters welcome The Herald welcomes ts readers comments. M letters to the edtor of general publc nterest wll be prnted. We do, however, retan the rght to refuse to prnt letters on grounds c/possble lbel or bad taste. Rare Mar Mnster of Envronment Dear Rare: ve just returned from a day nspecton tour of the Nechako Reservor whch was one of the best huntng areas of the provnce. Fve of us went and spent about sx hours a day walkng n good game areas (8 days n all). n all ths tme we never saw or heard another hunter, and would say that huntng pressure s not a factor CYRL n ths area. Even n the Conservancy Area n SHELFORD Tweedsmur Park where there s no huntng, the game populaton has nearly dsappeared. We spent the same number of days seven years ago and we saw a great deal of game at that tme (deer, carbou and moose). There was never a day when we ddnt see deer and moose, some days as many as 30 deer. Now there s no deer and we saw no carbou, not even any tracks, and we saw only 10 moose n 8 days. found fve wolf klls; two calves, a two-year-old cow, a bg dry cow, only just klled, and a bg bull klled less than a week ago. We heard wolves every day and covered an area of over 100 mles. thnk t s a great shame that due to false educaton and msleadng nformaton on rado and TV we have educated a generaton that knows lttle about game management, and the realtes of wld lfe n general, whch n the end stops our managers from managng. Wth reasonable predator control programs (wthout elmnatng the wolf) we could stll have just as much game as durng the 1950s and 1960s when we had game management ~nd control programs. Your staff n Fsh and Wldlfe ganed a lot of respect and experence on how best to carry t out. Now, wth the false educaton system on Wldlfe Management, and how the balance of nature works, the pressure groups have made t mpossble for Wldlfe Managers to take acton to save what lttle s left of our game hope make myself clear, dont blame those workng n the Fsh and Wldlfe Branch as ve seen fwst hand the abuse they get f they even try to carry out control methods n cattle areas, and t would be ten tmes worse f they were to practce control n our game areas where nothng has been done for over 10 years. Jack Radford, Sam Bawlf and yourself have had the dubous honor to presde over.the destructon of our game. ve always asked for more money for the Fsh and Wldlfe Branch, however. They are so lmted n ther actons on management and predator control, due to the unnformed actons of the pressure groups and news meda, that ve come to the concluson we wll lose nearly all our game anmals left and heavy expendtures would not be justfed. n many areas the wolves have destroyed so much of the game there s lttle left to eat so hopefully, they too wll de out. When the game starts to come back n 15 to 20 years, and f atttudes and educaton change, then wll be the tme to enlarge the Wldlfe Branch. ts lke tryng to buld a cattle ranch whle at the same tme rustlers are beng encouraged by the management and the masses of consumers. have talked to dozens of hunters and nearly all have the same report of lttle game aernss the whole central plan, ve had very few reports of any calves. The fve of us saw 10 moose n 8 days, as mentoned before; nne cows, one bull and no calves. You should send out a questonare to all hunters to try and get a dear, more accurate pcture of what s gong on. There are stll moose around and some hunters are gettng moose around here, manly from the new access roads. The late cow season can not be justfed except to try and convnce people that management snt all that bad f you can take cows after the season. ts a dsastrous pcture n game management and thnk we should admt our mstakes, take our lumps and start back on the road of game management rather than leavng everythng to chance.
