2 What is the IB virtual community (IBVC)? An exclusive online learning community for IB stakeholders. Will allow educators, students, alumni and IBEN members to collaborate, communicate, share and learn together. Extensive beta testing, rolled out August Developed in partnership with epals, the leading social network for K-12 learning.
3 How did we get here? The IB needed a robust platform for engaging the IB alumni community of approximately 650,000 Diploma and Certificate recipients (which h grows by approx. 80, graduates each year) at all stages in their life post-ib Passes DP exams Graduates from the DP Enters university Graduates from university Continues education and begins career Page 3
4 How did we get here? 83% of the over 3900 students, alumni, educators and volunteers polled in 2008 stated that they would be interested in joining an online IB community. I think it s great if the IB can make a place for everyone to get together online and share their experience. I like the idea of making friends in other countries. I really think we need something like this because it s good to learn about what other students, teachers, and alumni are doing. (DSI Focus Group student participant)
5 How did we get here? Designs for the IB virtual community have been informed by: Working group of staff from across the IB; Steering group of internal Academic, Advancement, Development, Communications, and ICT departments; Focus groups and other feedback activities with IB students, educators, PD providers and alumni; epals. 6 What does it offer? A safe online environment with clear communication permissions for each role; Centred around group collaboration, sharing and building information; Open or closed membership for groups; Group discussions in an online environment; Showcasing to the rest of the IB virtual community; In three official IB languages. g I love the idea that as a program we are moving forward in a way to allow students across the globe to communicate with each other. 7 IB Educators Collaborate online with students t at their school Have their class collaborate with another IB class somewhere else in the world Interact with IB students, other schools, alumni and IB volunteers IBEN members The IBVC is the ultimate networking tool. No longer limited to brief meetings at conferences, they can now maintain relationships with ease. The Virtual Community can be used to continue informal and social interactions outside of PD sessions How to use it IB Students Find fellow IB students t from around the world to work on projects together, do research, and practice languages A fun way to meet other IB students from all corners of the globe. Easy to connect with fellow students to share pictures and stories- and to learn more about other IB student s way of life. IB Alumni Reconnect with IB classmates and educators Network around professional and educational interests Mentor and encourage current IB DP students Maintain a lifelong connection with the IB and the IB mission
8 Access control for schools Educator and Student access to the IBVC will be controlled by schools: School contacts IBVC helpdesk requesting access School appoints IBVC school representative Students and teachers within school create accounts IBVC School Representative: Roles and Responsibilities IBVC moderation coordinator approves or rejects account requests Approve or reject account requests from students and other educators from the school Manage the school s group space within the IBVC Moderate the content within the school group Act as school contact should acceptable use issues by student or teacher arise

19 Features and functionality Wiki - History Editing a wiki page automatically creates a new revision. All wiki page revisions can be viewed and compared. The page author can select to be notified when the page is edited. Page 19
20 Features and functionality Forums All forum topics/threads are shown. Forum posts can be sorted or filtered. All group members can create a thread, add a reply and rate a post.
