1 B.I.N.G.O. for Books Round Up! For further information contact Shannan Combee Inwood Elementary 2200 Av. G. NW Winter Haven, FL n PROGRAM OVERVIEW BINGO for Books is an engaging evening event designed for families to learn reading or other content strategies that can be implemented at home, thus building a foundation of support for parents. The FDOE Bureau of Family and Community Outreach stated Evidence continues to be positive and convincing that students make greater gains when schools engage families in learning. This program is innovative in that it engages families in fun-filled activities while providing them with strategies necessary to support their child s learning. Families are more willing to attend events when they feel comfortable and see value in a program. This program took place in one evening but can be extended to multiple times throughout the school year. The purpose of this program is to engage parents and students in an exciting motivating way. Many of our parents need support from the school in order to help their children with reading and other academic skills. Parents and students have the opportunity to play the old time favorite game B.I.N.G.O. with a twist. B.I.N.G.O. is played until we reach five winners. Each winner picks out a book or content activity as a prize. At this time teachers teach a specific strategy that will promote literacy in students. Strategies taught can also be implemented by parents at home. These steps are repeated until five rounds of B.I.N.G.O. are played and five strategies are taught. At the end of the evening, each student receives an additional book of their choice. This program was implemented with students in kindergarten through grade five. All students including ESE and ESOL benefited from participation in the B.I.N.G.O. night. This program could easily be adapted to a specific class, grade level or possibly preschoolers getting ready for Kindergarten. This is an engaging and non-threatening way to involve parents and children while providing parents with the necessary strategies to promote success in their children our students. n OVERALL VALUE BINGO for Books is a great project to teach parents and students simultaneously the strategies necessary for success in reading. The atmosphere is relaxed while the content in the lessons is direct and succinct in order to be beneficial to all parties in attendance. When students and parents are hearing the same information, they are more likely to practice the strategies they have learned. Students and parents thoroughly enjoyed this exciting family night. Some parents have continually asked when another B.I.N.G.O. for Books family night will be scheduled. Changing the theme and or content focus of the family B.I.N.G.O. night helps to keep it fresh and exciting. To top the event off every child leaves with at least one book if not more. What a great way to get books into the hands of disadvantaged students. n LESSON PLAN TITLES BINGO Reading BINGO Science n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including pricing follows the lesson plans. n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Shannan Combee has a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida. She taught fourth grade at Dixieland Elementary for eight years followed by five years as a Science Lab Teacher at Lincoln Avenue Academy.
