1 NORTH OKANAGAN-SHUSWAP SCHOOL DISTRICT #83 CAREER PROGRAMS NEW WAYS TO GRADUATE *Further information is available in each school. Informational meetings for parents and students will be scheduled for most programs. Get a head start on a trade, technical training, TUITION-FREE, [for most programs] and Graduate with a HEAD START on a first career! STUDENT CAREER PATHS We know that 80% of Canadian high school students do not attend university. As well, 70% of careers require post secondary education and training. Some of the rewarding pathways that students can follow while still in secondary school are accessible by students in School District #83. Even in the current economic downturn students will require training and when trade programs are completed, with the aging workforce, it is anticipated that there will be demand for most trades. WHO CAN APPLY Students from any secondary school in Grades 10, 11 may apply. Students in Grade 12 may apply for select programs. All students must complete all grad requirements and program requirements by September of the student graduation year. Students will attend the school/post secondary institution where the program is offered for the period covered by the course, and then return to their home school. Students taking most off-campus post secondary courses are registered temporarily for the length of the course in both the program school/post secondary institution and the home school. As each student will return to his/her home school to graduate, each student should set up a method of staying in contact with the home school through their home school Career Coordinator, particularly regarding graduation activities and requirements. The intention of these programs is that students may use the credits to assist with graduation requirements. This course will provide the opportunity to gather transition evidence for the new graduation requirements. Contact your school career coordinator/counsellor for further information. CAREER TECHNICAL CENTRE [CTC] PROGRAMS These are programs which combine secondary and post-secondary courses in a range of applied technology and trade areas, and allow students to earn credits towards both secondary school graduation and a post-secondary credential simultaneously. These programs generally offer Dual Credits. CTC programs are usually taught by a college instructor and students receive Revised February 5,

2 external Post Secondary Institution [PSI course codes]. All SD83 sponsored students must successfully complete a full application and interview process. Dual Credits mean that students who meet the post-secondary institution 70% pass standards will receive credit towards both high school graduation, i.e. the Dogwood Certificate, and will receive a post secondary transcript with either partial or full credit towards a post secondary institution s certificate program. As well, it is a condition of these courses in most cases, that certification is dependent on students completing both the post secondary certificate program and the secondary Dogwood graduation program. College regulations with respect to attendance and student conduct apply as well as School District regulations. Ministry of Education policy states that students admitted to any Post Secondary course in B.C., with school district permission, qualifies as a Dual Credit course. ACE-IT [Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training] Industry Training Authority of BC [ITA] Level 1 Many of our programs are ACE-IT Level 1 programs. They let students earn credit towards both graduation and completion of an Industry Training Program. They involve course work and may include a work experience component. The post-secondary credit you earn through an ACE IT program will, in most cases, be equivalent to the first level of apprenticeship technical training in the trade you have selected. Students in ACE-IT programs will be registered as trainees with the Industry Training Authority [ITA]. School District will sponsor each student until graduation. Once you have obtained employment in the trade your sponsorship changes to your new employer. If the program is taught by a secondary school teacher the student will receive high school course credits. The dual credit component is the Level 1 certification. Examples of some programs available follow. Offered in School District #83 Grade 11 and Grade 12 students from any secondary school within the district may apply to attend these programs. Students will be expected to attend the program where it is offered. Once the program is completed the student will return to his/her home school to complete graduation course requirements. These courses will provide the opportunity to gather transition project evidence as required through the new graduation program.
