1 Executive Leadership Institute Scholars Reach Program Mid-Point Chancellor Erroll B. Davis, Jr. PATHS On September 1, Chancellor Erroll B. Davis, Jr., delivered the keynote address during an orientation luncheon hosted at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center for 67 faculty and staff leaders selected as scholars of the USG Executive Leadership Institute. If we are going to be successful in meeting the mission of the System and the state s needs, said Chancellor Davis, we must have the right leaders in place at every level of the organization. Leaders, he said, must be nurtured, trained, and grown. Davis praised the Executive Leadership Institute for providing its scholars with the opportunity to acquire two key components of leadership: (1) selfawareness, especially regarding one s role within an organization, and (2) awareness of the impact one has on others, be it positive or negative. Tina Woodard, the University System s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Professional Development, also greeted the scholars See a complete list of Scholars on page 3. and praised their achievements within their respective institutions, which contributed to their nomination to participate in the (Continued on page 2) PROVIDING LEADERSHIP & LEARNING AVENUES TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF THE SYSTEM Contents ELI Scholars Reach Program Midpoint Page 1 Professional Development Consortium Established Page ELI Scholars Page 3 System Leaders Support ELI Scholars Page 4 ELI Alumni Activities Page 5 Woodard Honored Page 7 Chancellor Erroll B. 2 ELI Scholars Reach Mid-Point (Continued from page 1) institute. Scholars supervisors and institution presidents attended the orientation luncheon in support of the scholars selected from their institution. Scholars have now completed half of the institute which included learning activities such as personality and 360 assessments, peer mentoring, an inclusiveness session and attending interactive president panel discussions. The second half of the program includes a job shadowing experience encompassing 40-hours of one-to-one shadowing of a System leader (see page 4). All ELI activities are designed to align with the USG Leadership Competency Model. One of the most lauded experiences in the inaugural year of the Institute was the ELI Scholar Dinner and Presidents Panel. Woodard said The opportunity for our scholars to hear institution presidents describe their own personal and professional leadership challenges during their careers is not only intriguing but highly educational and promotes the development of a leadership culture in the University System. Presidents who participated in the panel discussions this year were Dr. Mark Becker, Georgia State University; Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, University of West Georgia; Dr. Virginia Carson, South Georgia College; Dr. Tim Hynes, Clayton State University; Dr. Gary McGaha, Atlanta Metropolitan College; Dr. Brooks Keel, Georgia Southern University; Dr. Linda Bleicken, Armstrong Atlantic State University; and Dr. Anthony Tricoli, Georgia Perimeter College. Assistant Vice Chancellor for Professional Development Tina Woodard welcomes new scholars. Professional Development Consortium Established (Continued from page 1) PDC are to: Continuously improve learning and organization development functions of each institution. Identify, develop, and execute key learning programs and System initiatives. Create a system and associated processes for System-wide knowledge sharing. The following six institutions were selected to be a USG Regional Training Center for the System: Georgia Institute of Technology Georgia Perimeter College Georgia Southern University Kennesaw State University Medical College of Georgia Valdosta State University The Regional Training Centers will lead in assisting other institutions within their regional areas to understand the professional development issues relating to the institution as well as develop solutions to those challenges. Coinciding with the appointment of the RTC leaders, functional leaders have also been appointed in four focus areas: Professional Development Architecture (compliance and leadership) Internal Leadership Development Assessment/Evaluation Technology The PDC has been hard at work developing System-wide training programs. The program will be piloted in January 2011, with a targeted System-wide launch in Fall Watch for further details and visit us at: Expanding Professional Development Through Collaboration and a Commitment to Excellence professional_development_consortium/ 2

4 Leaders Across the System Support ELI Scholars Through Job Shadowing Opportunities Kennesaw State University President Dan Papp is providing shadow opportunities for two ELI Scholars. An integral part of the ELI Scholars experience during the program is job shadowing. Each scholar will shadow a current USG leader with a goal of understanding the knowledge, skills, and attributes that are necessary to function as an effective executive level leader within the USG; to demonstrate an awareness of the various social, political, cultural, legal and ethical issues confronting programs and processes within key USG units; and develop a professional developmental relationship with an executive leader outside of her/his functional work area. Scholars agree to a 40-hour commitment for shadowing. Many exceptional leaders across the System have volunteered for this program, demonstrating a breadth and depth of support for ELI scholars. Below is a partial list of leaders participating in the job shadowing project. 5 ELI Alumni Activities ELI Alumni continue to participate in System-level activities, currently through the Innovation Consulting Group and becoming mentors for Scholars. Innovation Consulting Group The Board of Regents has provided Principles to Guide Innovation to facilitate the development of a culture of innovation throughout the System and encourage innovations that are of high quality, student focused, and aligned with the System s Strategic Plan. The Regents also encourage institutions to fuel innovation through the capture of operating efficiencies and the pursuit of student funding processes. By request of the Regents, the alumni of the Executive Leadership Institute will engage in identifying, designing, prototyping, and evaluating innovation projects that have been approved and may lead to potential System-wide implementation. ELI Alumni Mentors Forty-five of the 64 ( ) Scholars are giving back to the program by mentoring 58 of the current ELI cohort. Serving as a mentor provides ELI Alumni with an opportunity to continue their own leadership development and supplement the knowledge and skills that they gained through the Executive Leadership Institute. Mentoring is a rich and rewarding experience, and a skill that will continue to be used in their leadership role. The goals and objectives of the mentoring program include: Provide an opportunity for ELI Alumni to share how they have applied the knowledge and skills acquired through the ELI; New scholars will gain guidance as to how to best optimize their learning experience; Both mentor and scholar will gain opportunities for continued networking and informal learning. The goals and objectives of the groups are to: Create a culture of innovation and excellence throughout the University System Develop a program that supports and actively strives to accomplish the System s 7 Principles of Innovation Continue to develop leadership skills of ELI alumni Design a process that will solicit information from institutions about needs and challenges Engage ELI alumni in applying innovative thinking and solutions for addressing institution needs and challenges Migrate selected innovations to the University System Two projects have been identified for the Alumni Innovation Consulting Groups: Create an early warning system for students at risk of attrition at Georgia State University, and Create System-wide performance metrics for data based decision-making at Georgia Institute of Technology The Innovation Consulting Groups will present their findings and recommendations to the Board of Regents at the June Board meeting. Mentors have participated in online mentoring training and attended the ELI kick-off orientation session where they had an opportunity to meet their scholar mentee. Ongoing support is provided by the ELI Steering Committee, and follow-up online sessions are planned for January. While the formal feedback surveys have not been submitted yet, informal feedback received from mentors has been positive. 5
6 Assistant Vice Chancellor Tina Woodard Honored Tina Woodard, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Professional Development in the Office of Human Resources at the University System of Georgia, was honored on October 28, 2010 for completing the Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) sponsored by the Office of the Governor and State Personnel Administration. The only program of its kind in the United States, the ELDP, which began in 2009, aims to build leadership excellence in Georgia. Forty-one state agency heads were invited to nominate one leader from their agency who has the potential to assume a leadership position within one to three years. After being nominated by Chancellor Erroll B. Davis, Jr. and approved by the Office of the Governor, Tina completed the one-year program that included a formal assessment and targeted development phases, as well as the formation and performance of a challenge specific to the University System of Georgia. The program offered customized developmental experiences based on the Leadership Success Profile for Commissioners, Executive Directors, and Agency Heads and focused on such competencies as vision, strategy, transforming government, collaboration and talent management. The foundation of ELDP was a performance challenge project that each participant designed and implemented to address one of the three to five top challenges facing his or her organization. Tina assembled a team to develop a talent management Joe Doyle, Commissioner, Georgia State Personnel Administration, Tina Woodard and Trey Childress, Chief Operating Officer, State of Georgia, appear in photo above. strategy for critical personnel positions that have a significant number of impending retirements. With close to 40% of chief business officers eligible to retire within the next five years, we recognized the urgency of investing more in the professional development of our employees to facilitate internal advancement, Tina stated. In addition to her full-time responsibilities in the University System Office, Tina is a doctoral student at the University of Georgia in the Adult Education Human Resource Development program. Prior to her current position at the Board of Regents, Tina was the Organizational Development Director at Gwinnett County Government, where she developed a multi-faceted leadership institute. She earned a bachelor s degree in Industrial Engineering and a master s degree in Human Resource Development from Clemson University. Tina has also received numerous awards for her community service work in mentoring and developing leadership capacity of youth. Creating a more educated Georgia 6
7 Twelve Scholars from ELI Inaugural Class Earn Promotions Twelve ELI scholars from the class have already earned employment promotions, most within their own institutions, but two at other USG institutions. This figure represents 19 percent of the 62 scholars who completed the ELI training in its first year of activity. These achievements attest to the success of the Institute s two-pronged goal: 1) to identify high-performing employees in the University System, and 2) to help them develop into the System s next generation of leaders. The scholars who have earned promotions to date are listed below.
