2 DataSpring is one of the fastest growing ICT and cloud service providers in the Czech Republic. It currently operates two data centers in Czech Republic in Prague and Lužice in southern Moravia, which provide infrastructure services to customers with high IT performance and operational demands. Recently, DataSpring expanded its portfolio of services with new backup offerings: Backup-as-a-service and endpoint device backup based on Commvault software. High demands for functionality, robustness and management Growing popularity of cloud and hybrid infrastructures raises new demands that also relate to data backup solutions. DataSpring was therefore searching for solution that would meet both its own infrastructure and application backup needs well as being able to expand its offering for data backup services to business customers. It was a greenfield project we were not replacing any existing installations. We therefore looked for a backup solution that would cover both our own current requirements as well as future needs of our customers, explains David Lukeš, Technology Director at DataSpring. The following key criteria were defined for the tender: Provide backup for DataSpring s own environment (physical servers, virtual servers, applications, endpoint devices) Realize and provide, through same licenses, backup services to business customers in a multi-tenanted environment Offer backup of virtual servers, physical servers, applications, files and endpoint devices with one solution, one administration environment and one reporting interface Offer as-a-service alternative to traditional backup solutions in better quality, at lower or comparable price Support a transparent pricing policy and price competitiveness on TCO base from customer perspective Allow hybrid, combined and atypical models for backup After evaluating all the criteria, Commvault software was the preferred choice. Technical requirements, licensing and pricing policies played a key role. It was the combination of technical functionalities and price attractiveness and the provision of storage services that made Commvault software come out as the best choice, explains Petr Suchánek. An important aspect was that this solution allows calculation of license costs related to front-end data volume, rather than archived volume (after deduplication and compression), which is sometimes difficult to assess. The main advantage of this licensing model is transparency towards service provider as well as his customers. 2

3 Implementation with direct vendor support The actual implementation of the backup solution took three months. Scope and complexity related to the need of securing backup of DataSpring s own infrastructure, as well as preparing and testing all functions necessary for the provision of two main backup services backup-as-a-service and endpoint backup. DataSpring supplied the necessary cooperation and collaboration from its technical staff for implementation and testing. The implementation itself was carried out by partner company MHM Computer with direct support and involvement of Commvault experts in Austria, describes David Lukeš around the vendor involvement. DataSpring plans to cooperate with partners in the future: We want to use services from experienced partners for larger implementations of backup services with our customers. Our offering differs from that of traditional cloud providers. We are not limiting backup services to virtual environments within the data center. Our aim is to provide complex backup solutions covering physical servers, enterprise applications like MS SQL, Oracle, SAP and endpoints such as user workstations. These virtually unlimited backup solutions are complemented with other options such as storing some or all the customer backups on-premise, explains Petr Suchánek. DataSpring plans for the near future include introduction of new Commvault software-based services, such as data archiving. One of our priority verticals is automotive, where there is strong demand for professional archiving and backup services. We feel there is an opportunity in public sector as well, mainly in connection with legislative requirement for data storage and archiving, adds David Lukeš. Quality of provided services and their availability is guaranteed by SLA as well as low RPO/RTO for critical data recovery. Main benefits and advantages of the solution With Commvault software, we can backup anyone, anyhow. We know that we are able to put together technically and financially sound proposals to virtually any customer. We believe ours is currently the best backup solution and business (pricing) model on the Czech market. Last but not least we can now offer a truly complete backup solution from physical and virtual server infrastructure to workstation and mobile devices backup.
