1 Between Us Entre Nous F a l l / A u t o m n e I S S N V o l u m e 2 4, I s s u e 2 A Night Among the Stars: Volunteer Appreciation Party As dusk set in on May 27th, the crowds began to gather at the RA Centre to recognize the stars among us. If Frank Sinatra himself had walked in, I don t believe it could have stolen the spotlight from our stellar cast of volunteers. How do you truly express your appreciation to such fantastic people? One night a year specially dedicated to our volunteers is not enough, and I hope our appreciation is felt yearround. Volunteers were treated to a night of swingin music, candlelight and fine desserts. The lights were low and spirits high as the room began to fill. The SEOCHC Choir Sisters in Song and One Brother dazzled the guests with renditions of classic hits from the 1940 s and 1950 s. They were magnificent and looked fabulous amid the sea of red and black, sequins and feathers! We had some special words of appreciation from the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Arly Dungy, our Executive Director, Leslie McDiarmid, and our Member of Parliament, David McGuinty. The room buzzed softly with the sounds of tea and coffee being poured, forks slicing off decadent bites of cheesecake, greetings being passed among staff and volunteers and notes of jazz cloaking the whole room. In no time at all, the candles had burned low and night had fallen outside. The volunteers slowly began to each make their way home with a fresh carnation, a gift card of appreciation in hand and the warm wishes of thanks and a goodnight in the air. Yes, we thank you. Each and every day we thank you. We may not take the chance to tell you as often as we d like, but the thought is there. It is there when you are the first to arrive and set up a program, when you greet each and every client with a smile and a warm word, when you listen to stories of struggles and offer encouragement, and when you ease staff workload. You ensure we have everything we need to do our job well, you teach, you drive, you offer a helping hand, you make a difference. Cheers to all South- East Ottawa Community Health Centre volunteers for your time and dedication this past year. We are certainly among some very bright stars! Nos be ne voles ont eu droit a de la musique entraînante, a la lueur des chandelles, et a des desserts raffine s. 4 P a g e 4 How to Alleviate the Stress of Moving for Older Adults By Margit Novack B e t w e e n U s / E n t r e N o u s There are certain experiences childbirth is one; moving is another that nature and time definitely draw a curtain on, so you forget in between times how painful they are. Katherine Graham, famed publisher of the Washington Post, wrote this famous quote in her Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, Personal History. Most people believe that the joy of having children makes the pain of childbirth worthwhile, just as most seniors who relocate are happy with the outcome as well. Moving allows these seniors to enjoy a new life that often includes better opportunities for socialization, stimulation, improved nutrition and exercise all important aspects of thriving as we age. But let's not sugarcoat the truth: moving is tough for everyone, but it is toughest for elderly adults. What is relocation stress syndrome? Over the past two decades, increased attention has been paid to relocation stress syndrome (RSS), which is also known as transfer trauma. RSS is a formal nursing diagnosis characterized by a combination of physiologic and psychologic disturbances that occur as a result of transferring a person from one environment to another. Symptoms of relocation stress syndrome include exhaustion, sleep disturbances, anxiety, grief and loss, depression and disorientation. In seniors, these symptoms are exacerbated by dementia, mild cognitive impairment, poor physical health, frailty, lack of a support system, and sensory impairment. For these seniors in particular, the resulting confusion, depression and agitation have led to increased falls, undesirable weight loss and self-care deficits. Although initial studies on RSS focused on outcomes of individuals moved to nursing homes and assisted living facilities without their involvement or consent, it is now generally understood that RSS can affect those who have chosen to move, been involuntarily relocated, or been placed in a care facility for mental or medical needs. What You Can do to Help Offset Relocation Stress Syndrome Studies have shown that certain actions are successful in minimizing RSS. These actions, which can be undertaken by family members, are all hallmarks of senior move management. They include: Involving the senior in the decision and planning process. Providing the senior with an opportunity to ask questions and discuss his or her concerns. Honoring the individual s preferences and allowing him or her to maintain control. Paying attention to details and maintaining the senior s daily routine as much as possible. Safeguarding the senior s personal possessions. Involving the senior in setting up the new room or apartment. Making the new home resemble (as much as possible) the old home. Helping the resident (Continued on page 5)

5 V o l u m e 2 4, I s s u e 2 P a g e 5 (Continued from page 4) become acclimated. It is not surprising that seniors do better after a move when they are involved in the decision, have an opportunity to voice their concerns and be heard, and are able to maintain a sense of control. Anyone, regardless of age, would do better under these circumstances. The problem is: seniors often don't get this opportunity. Well-meaning family members may make decisions on their elderly loved ones' behalf, not soliciting or listening to their concerns, or simply need to move the seniors faster than they can handle. In short, family members often focus on the details of the move rather than on the person who is moving. How Senior Move Managers Can Help Few things speak as urgently about the benefit of using a senior move manager when relocating an elderly adult. Let the senior move manager handle the move; he or she will involve the individual and honor any preferences (it's what senior move managers do). This allows family members to focus on what they do best: attending to the needs of the person in transition, maintaining his or her routines and helping the senior become acclimated to the new environment. Nothing can entirely remove the pain of relocation, but this team approach helps everyone focus on what is truly important. 8 P a g e 8 B e t w e e n U s / E n t r e N o u s Reducing clutter: an environmentally friendly activity There are times when we look at our living spaces and think, I really need to sort through everything and get rid of all the clutter around here. It seems to me I hear many more people saying this nowadays. I believe that too much stuff around us makes us feel bogged down, that somehow our mind is cluttered and we feel heavier. If this is true for you as well, reducing clutter can help you think more clearly, make you feel lighter, and better. Let the air flow in your home. For every unnecessary item you do not purchase, and every item that you give to someone in need, you are doing a small deed to save the environment. For every item that is manufactured, there is a cost - whether in natural resources or carbon emissions - so the less you contribute to the supply and demand of these products, the better hope there is for our planet s survival. Here are other advantages of reducing clutter: 1. A Fresh Start It is never too late to begin a new phase in your life. 2. More Space It really does feel good as the clutter starts to disappear and you begin to feel the freedom of empty space growing around you. This feeling can be appreciated from the very first item and increases over time. Take a moment to focus on that freedom with every little piece of clutter you choose to remove and fill the process with joy rather than dread. 3. Less Maintenance the fewer items cluttering up your home, the easier it is to keep your surroundings clean and tidy. Every item you remove is one less thing you need to maintain in any way, whether dusting, cleaning or storing. Also house cleaning will be simpler if there are fewer items to be moved in order to access the surface under them, such as benches and floors. You gotta love that! 4. Guilt Relief - We generally carry a burden of guilt for every item associated with the waste of money or lack of use. For every one of these items that leaves our homes, there is a relief from that guilt so long as we learned the lesson of needless waste. 5. Giving Back Whether we sell items to grateful buyers on ebay, donate items to charity, give items away to friends and family, or recycle them, there is a good feeling that accompanies each action. Focus on those good feelings and it will spur you on in your quest. 6. Appreciation You will find that you have a higher appreciation for the items you choose to keep and for their role in your household. People will see them more too! 7. Simplifying -There is more to this topic than the title implies: having an uncluttered home and embracing the principles of staying uncluttered can simplify your life. I have discovered the freedom that clutter reduction has added to my life. It has allowed me to enjoy the present and foresee a better future. 9 Volume 24, Issue 2 Page 9 Ottawa Good Food Box About the Good Food Box (GFB) The Ottawa Good Food Box buys fresh, top quality fruits and vegetables from local wholesalers and local growers. We sell this food, without making a profit, in order to encourage more people to eat fruits and vegetables. How does it work? Customers order and pay for their chosen box (in person or online) in the first week of the month. Customers pick up their box from one of the over 30 GFB sites across the city on the third week of the month. What comes in a box? Every month we try to put staples in the box such as apples, carrots, onions, lettuce and bananas. We generally put potatoes in the box every second month. Everything else in the box changes from month to month, depending on what is in season and what is a good buy. You might find kiwi fruit, strawberries, squash, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, turnip or mango in your Good Food Box. Each box comes with a newsletter and contains an interesting article, nutritional information and some recipe ideas. Here is the schedule for PAYMENT and PICK-UP for South-East Ottawa Centre.
