The purpose of the Legal Jurisprudence and Documentation presentation is to provide an overview of the legal and ethical implications of an electronic health record from a nurse perspective and incorporate the process of communication and documentation to prepare for the National Counsel for State Boards of Nursing (CSBN) Exam and the Nursing Jurisprudence Exam from the Texas Board of Nursing. Participants will incorporate components of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses, and Rules (Standards of Nursing Practice) and (Unprofessional Conduct) from the Texas Administrative Code for application to nursing practice. 4 TOPIC: Care of the Patient with Neurological Trauma Steven J Jewell, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, Department of Trauma and Emergency Nursing, San Antonio Military Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas This seminar will be a discussion of current diagnosis and treatment management for subdural hematomas and subarachnoid hemorrhages. Furthermore, we will be discussing traumatic brain injuries. There will be case studies involving traumatic brain trauma secondary to motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, and blunt trauma. Computerized Tomography image will be displayed for many scenarios discussed. EKG;s and lab values may also be discussed. This seminar is focused on first-line management of these conditions as it relates to prehospital care and care delivery at a Level I trauma facility. TIME: LOCATION: DeWitt Room TOPIC: Spotting Diamonds in the Rough: What you Need to Know about Nurses with Psychiatric & Substance Use Disorder Michael Van Doren, MSN, RN, CARN. Program Director, Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses, Austin, Texas Nurses are at risk for psychiatric and substance use disorders no less than the general population, possibly more. In this session, we ll explore some of the risk factors for nurses and why nurses are possibly at greater risk for not receiving needed intervention. 5 TOPIC: Speak Up. Speak Out. Texas Association Against Sexual Assault Lisa Y. Zapata, LBSW, CA, Technical Assistance Program Coordinator, Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, Austin, Texas In 1974, one of the first of three Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART) began in Amarillo, Texas. Since that time, pediatricians, Adult/Child Protective Services, public health clinics, school nurses, family practitioners, social workers, OB/GYN s, parents, colleges, law enforcement, community leaders and emergency departments have had sexually assaulted patients present to them requesting help. The providers were not aware of legal or medical protocols for addressing these complaints. There were no written guidelines on how to communicate with these patients, their families, or friends. This workshop is designed to inform medical providers the vital information needed to act as patient advocates when working with a victim of sexual assault. TIME : 1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.
