Sony Pictures hacked by North Korea? 11 TB of data was taken Scripts, unreleased movies, actor compensation and off-the-cuff conversations of Sony executives Politically motivated as retribution for the release of The Interview (allegedly) John Gapper of the Financial Times explains that there is a new specter of hacks that combine national rivalry, hacker ideology, performance art, ritual humiliation and data combustion, culminating in complete corporate chaos. 11 Perimeter security just isn t enough January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

Defending Data Kaplan Advisors survey on InfoSec key findings Budgets for information security are often splintered 46% of respondents didn t know how much they spend on prevention vs. response 72% say spending on infosec has changed in the past year 65% expect spending to continue to increase in the future Mobility and BYOD have expanded the perimeter beyond what any corporate can control, introducing threats that you cannot fully monitor, said one respondent. Perimeter security is just one piece of a larger consideration; you want to protect data at rest and in transit, [says] a U.S. Secret Service representative. 23% agreed that regulators impact their spending posture while a variety of factors also influence the decision, including: executive directive; available solutions; market forces; and, the data itself. Survey report available at January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

Lessons learned Can t rely on old approaches Environment is more complex BYOD, Internet of Things Bad guys are more sophisticated Technical skills are the new normal More upside for the bad guys Information is power and power has dollar value Not just stealing identities, but nation states stealing defense secrets, corporations stealing IP January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

By 2017, 40% of Global 1000 organizations will have aligned their information management governance and information security governance programs. 18 What IG really is a strategic framework composed of standards, processes, roles and metrics that hold organizations and individuals accountable to create, organize, secure, maintain, use, and dispose of information in ways that align and contribute to the organization s goals. an organization s coordinated, inter-disciplinary approach to satisfying information compliance requirements and managing information risks while optimizing information value. Sedona Conference ARMA International January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

On Ramps to IG Projects to get a governance program off the ground Clean out the etrash File shares archives Find and protect sensitive data PII, PCI, IP (contracts, trade secrets) Application of security classifications Data migration Don t just move the problem from one place to another! January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

On Ramp project principles 1. Clear scope a) Don t boil the ocean. Pick something very specific. 2. Short time frame for success a) Six months or less 3. Success measures that are calculable a) Hard-dollar ROI wherever possible 4. Engage stakeholders early and often a) Regular updates and a final report that has an ask 5. Align project outcomes to business goals January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

etrash clean up 1. Choose one or two functional areas only (preferably areas you own or that are natural allies) 2. Limit amount of data to ensure time frame of project is limited 3. How much space is saved and how much $ does that represent? If some portion of that is likely to have been swept up in a litigation, how much would review have cost? 4. Engage business and assure this is to help them get junk out of their way; engage legal to ensure they know you ll protect any items on legal hold 5. This project aligns to our business objective of operating lean (for example) January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

Find and protect sensitive data 1. Pick one specific kind of sensitive data (PCI, contracts) 2. Limit data sources to be investigated to keep timeline in check 3. Articulate the value of protecting this data a) Optimized contract renewal terms for contracts protected b) Avoidance of compliance failure/fines 4. Know your internal policies for procurement, sensitive data classification 5. Our corporate philosophy is Customers First, so we owe them a duty of protecting their data proactively (for example) January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

Data migration 1. Attach to an already-funded project 2. Limit scope to keep timeline short to show value 3. Amount of junk cleaned out and $ value that represents in new repository 4. Reassure project owner you are not there to slow them down or get in their way 5. Optimization of financial and human resources associated with the project as well as the resulting environment (for example) January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX

In the end Information Governance is not a project, it is a way of life You have to start somewhere, not everywhere Small wins are still wins Pick on ramps that have a compelling reason to act attached (like getting punched in the face!) Don t let perfect get in the way of good The principles of RIM encapsulate all of the specialties of IG Good governance affects the bottom line, so be sure to measure and align value at every turn January 5, 2015 COPYRIGHT NUIX
